I just downloaded the demo and played it on my modern Samsung 4K tv on Game Mode and my experience was GREAT! zero stutters! It runs smoothly on my TV. Maybe you guys are playing on a cheap low end tv or not in Game Mode on the 4K or HDTV. I didn't play it in handheld. Nintendo Switch
The Switch version is super disappointing. Microstutters and noticeable input lag on the jump makes it feel bad. Hopefully they can fix it before producing the physical.
It will be definitely better when the final product is on the cartridge by Limited Run. It's more a Wayforward issue because when I played the Prince of Persia demo on Switch before I bought it it ran very smoothly.
@@misterlexx2721 I just finished PoP on Switch and it's really well optimized. It plays amazingly well on Switch. Contra reminds me a bit of Spidersaurs, which is also from Wayforward. Limited Run usually will hold off on printing cartridges if a patch is in the works. The Panzer Dragoon remake comes to mind, as they waited for the needed patch before production. Hopefully this game can be fixed because I'd love a Switch physical copy. 🤞
@@Lazy943 nonsense like this is exactly why devs are fine releasing unfinished games that need future updates. It makes the physical pointless, but whatever, I'll be a "karen". You sure got me 😱
@@streetmagik3105 How many times will this have to be explained: Developers= Grunts, Pawns, Soldiers with actual talents and skills doing the actual work, but with little to no say on administrative decisions. Publishers= Talentless suits who make all the financial and administrative decisions, such as releasing an unfinished/unoptimized game immediately just because they want the revenue ASAP
Being I started gaming with Frogger maybe they should be my fav dev! As of lately trying to get into MGS series relearning the ropes with the new Switch collection.. I loved the original Contra on NES.. Also Shattered Soldier on PS2
Indeed an error where conpanies may be able to restore gaming, but it's theor call, not ours The MUST run from micro transaction BS or pay to win which makes physical releases pointless which is say a large # still buy discs to resell. The less resell value, the more people will dump discs. That's what it took for me. I have go ask if i ever wanna sell is it even worth the hassle. Sometimes for sure like $20, do t tbrow $20 away by only buying digital 8f u have resale ability.
I was pretty psyched when they announced this one. I had zero expectations going in and I liked it for the most part - I didn’t notice the frame rate issues on series x.
Growing up I loved this game, I used to think those 2 characters was Rambo and Arnold Schwarzenegger . Remember the 30 man cheat code? Up,Up, Down, Down ,Left right, Left Right, B,A,B,A, select, start.
Awesome of you to mention Contra 4 on the DS, maybe my favorite and I had the original as a kid and probably completed it close to 100 times. I think 4 nailed the formula, so fun, so difficult, I never beat anything but easy mode. It wasn't even developed by Konami but it was amazing.
I like it. I grew up like you did in that generation. I will be buying this for my son. He likes our old games. We have throw back game night on my old systems.
Thanks for the video John. I guess I will play this 12-18 months from now when I get my physical copy. Love the sound. Hopefully the fix the studder in the game.
Also in defense of Contra Rogue Corps.. it was obviously more inspired by the Neo Contra games, and imo reminds me of games like Millenium Soldiers from the PS2/Dreamcast era rather than the platformers. Sure, it could use some polish and the textures were hideous in some places. But for a twin sick shooter, it's not bad if you don't let yourself get hung up on that it's not like the Contra games we grew up playing.
Finally! after 13 years of HC Uprising and 15 years of Contra Rebirth! Here it is, a real new contra! thankfully we had Blazing Chrome in the middle! March is gonna be good, Alone in the dark and Contra returning from the ashes. Where's Fang and Sheena? a bit dissapointed with characters, but hopefully they would be unlocakble, we'll see
I second that! I just got it yesterday and it's so buttery smooth and fun! (thanks to this awesome demo I got all jazzed up for run n' gun shooters and found Blazing Chrome)
Good video John....I'll definitely will be picking this new Contra game up for my Xbox. Hey, did you also hear about Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster (by Nightdive Studios - same company that did the Quake 1 & 2 remaster and the Turok trilogy remasters) due out by the end of February/early March... And did you also hear about the Star Wars Battlefront Classics Collection (by Aspyr - same company that just did the Tomb Raider I-II-III Remaster) due out around the same time as this new Contra game...
Me and my friends would play this game all the time. One of my all time favorite game. Wow can't wait to get my hand on this game. I'm old school too. Hopefully it's still dark like it was
I'm glad Konami is deciding to invest in development of new games from their IPs. I'm more of drawn art style too, but graphics still are OK and I understand decisions like making more vibrant the platforms, kudos for that. But some assets I feel don't match the same art direction, like those boulders, but maybe is my screen and I better play this on a full screen TV to appreciate it more. Thanks, John.
I played on Steam Deck and no stuttering with solid 60fps. I heard others complaining about the Switch version that have tons of stuttering, the resolution might not even be 1080p on tv mode, 30fps and input lag which to be honest doesn't surprise me. If I get the physical version will be for xbox but mostly I will play it on PC/Steam Deck.
BS.
@@misterlexx2721 like I said, I played on my Steam Deck with no issue. Im saying other people complains about that port. Beside, why we have to get tv with game mode when people are playing other switch games with no issue? Wouldn't be better that Wayforward just correct the game with a patch before release? To me is a bad port if people need to buy a TV with game mode option for just one game causing issue.
Hey what's up John. I don't believe Your Philadelphia Eagles need a new QB. Hurts is good. I played this game before seeing your post. I like everything about this game. I'm all RETRO. 80% of my games on all the consoles I own are Retro games. I have the 'Contra Anniversary',game compilation. Thanks again John for hanging in there on all matters/issues.
Almost everybody does, big companies don't do it because its expensive and they want the cheapest ways possible. Look at King of Fighters XIII and then King of Fighters XV, the visual downgrade is huge, but it was cheaper to make.
Been playing Contra 3 lately as it's my favorite in the series. The pc version of the demo didn't seem to have any performance issues in my experience. Can't fault the graphics much, it kind of reminds me of Contra Shattered Soldier but with a tiny "disney" vibe to it. But I must say they really nailed the feeling of Contra. You can run and gun with 100% control. Dodging bullets and attacks is as good as Contra 3. Definately picking up the full version. So happy to see them going back to the formula that works. Just like Sega did with Sonic Mania. Some games are just meant to be in 2D (even in a 3D engine)
Looks good to me. I remember playing the Contra series early on and Contra III Alien Wars blew is out of the water on SNES. I'll have to check the PS5 version
I don't get how they did so bad with the performance on the Switch. Hopefully it's better on full release. It's not like this is some looker that pushes the Switch to its breaking point. Will probably pick it up on ps5 if I do at all
I definitely like the graphics in this game! I mean, Contra on the NES will always be my favorite Contra game. And yes, I beat using the Konami lives code!
This is a divisive game, but it is to Contra as Resurrection is to Ghosts n'Goblins. You'll either love it or hate it. The demo is like Contra greatest hits.
Just played the demo on PS4. On Arcade Mode, there was no hiccups, on Story mode, there were quite a few.. especially on the vertical level. To the point it would hiccup while I was jumping, but continue while the screen was frozen and kill me.
So cool you got to cover this! I’m a hand drawn fan also but we’re close in age lol. I like it, it looks pretty good but this looks more like a $19.99 download. I couldn’t see myself paying more than that lol! Great vid sir!
Looks awesome! Played the demo on PS5, and the action's buttery smooth. Maybe the Switch hardware's struggling a little? Hope they can address in an update before launch day.
Man that's super dope , these kids want realism there just some games you don't remake in that way , this here is perfect real arcade like with out all that crazy A I running it .
I played the demo on XboX, and I had a blast with it. I am glad to see you are enjoying it as well. Now we need a new Metal Slug game. I do not know what SNK is doing over there .?.
I liked the demo, it's pretty fun and I feel they captured the essence and the controls felt OK. I did feel some micro stutters on the Switch, but nothing too annoying. Still, I hope they have that solved on release. Gonna wait for the reviews before picking it.
Coming from the 80's era of gaming, these graphics are fine. The gameplay is pretty good. I've noticed on a lot of comments of reviews, people are nitpicking. A $40 game that'll be on sale for $20 in a couple of months.
I like the fact they've picked up the Contra IP and decided to run with it. The visuals though....something about it feels too 'clean', I get there are a lot of pixel type remasters, it feels like something in between is needed.
But seriously the PS2 contra destroys this and almost every direction aesthetically.. I know the switches a little old but it can't compete with a PS2?
I never got around to contra 4, but I heard it was good! so definitely had high hopes for contra OG. Loved what I played of the demo, though I died a *lot* trying to get there, haha. (and that's even with the life meter from hard corps!!) I love how they kinda threw all these elements and stuff from the classic games in a blender and that's what we wound up with. yeah I did notice a few hiccups and little things (like the music not playing on continue) but I'm sure it isn't anything that couldn't be patched out post-release. certainly the best contra I've played in recent memory, I have to give it that.
Contra 4 was the best imo and I am a nostalgic dude that played Contra 1 since I was 5 years old. If you have a chance you should try 4, it's a wonderful one, with a lot of respect to many previous titles (Contra 1, 3, Hard Corps), with a great gameplay and soundtrack. Can't wait to play this one, mostly because it was made by team that made Contra 4 in 2007. I have high hope that Operation Galuga will be awesome :)
Appreciate the game video clip as it's helped in my decision on getting this game or not. Sadly it's one I'll be waiting to go on sale before buying as it definitely looks like it would need an update patch or two. Sad as this looks under-baked and kind of surprised since this is coming from Way Forward who usually do phenomenal games but this sadly looks like a weak one for them.
I’m playing it and enjoying it. I wonder how it looks on different platforms. The switch version definitely needs some polishing. It’s tough but that is a good thing.
I feel like if you are going to do a 2d side scroller in this day and age, you should be able to have photo realistic graphics without a performance hit.
Agree with graphics sort of wish they were retro modern, but being it’s Contra will pick up, hoping that Way Forward has some more polish to it but we’ll see
The Switch has so many more graphically intense games, this falls on the developers laziness in optimizing it for the Switch, yet they will use the aging hardware excuse.
