it's more than that, people might call the cops on the wrong people but it is also the officers job to gather additional information and not shoot someone point blank before knowing the situation. It's not illegal to answer your door with a gun pointed down, finger off the trigger (non aggressively) in your own home. Even if this was the guy arguing with his girl, why shoot him without saying a word? The officer didn't say "put the gun down" or "drop your weapon". He just killed him.

While the person making the call has an obligation to either say, "I THINK the disturbance is coming from (apartment number), but I don't know for sure", the cop has a MUCH BIGGER obligation to not assume the information he's getting is correct. At the end of the day, as you said already, it's not illegal to answer the door TO YOUR OWN HOME with your gun pointed down. Unless you're black. Then it's an immediate death sentence!

The Officer did not clearly identify everytime he knocked. If the officer would assume that it might be dangerous he has to stand down and wait for other officers or special response.

This case is more complicated than murder since it can be considered a self-defense killing even though the deputy did use excessive force which was deadly.

Prosecutors have plenty of time to look at this from every possible angle. When they do charge him, he's screwed.

it is legal in literally every state to have a firearm in your own home. cops need to stop assuming people who are armed are a threat just because they are armed. when i was a Marine infantryman if I shot at someone who hadn't shot at me first, I would be court martialed and imprisoned at the conclusion of which I would also have been dishonorably discharged, which carries with it a felony conviction. As long as cops get to claim they felt they were in immediate danger of serious personal injury, the courts say they can use deadly force against anyone, regardless of whether that individual is breaking any laws. Cops in Florida killed a cosplayer a few years ago for carrying a wooden sword... a stick. they killed a guy for carrying a stick. their unions make sure the people writing the laws are friendly towards law enforcement. endorsements from police unions is the fastest way to NOT get my vote.

This quick trigger sheriff aggressively banged on the man's door, shot him within 3 seconds while the airman had his gun pointed downward & the other unarmed hand extended as if too say "wait" And it further infuriated me hearing this sheriff shouting "drop the gun" after, NOT BEFORE shooting him!!!!..I pray for justice because this was straight murder...And, as for the caller & the female escorting the sheriff to the obvious wrong door, If either has a conscience I hope they feel guilty for creating a fatal, unnecessary, situation for the airman & his family!!!!

Well we don't know what the Airman would have done because the officer never gave him a chance to put the gun down. He only yelled to put the gun down after he shot him. That is what will make him be found guilty.

Yes because the homeowner had a gun in his hand. It only takes a “split second” to shoot somebody. The deputy was reacting to a gun being drawn on him.

That cop unholstered his weapon, readied it, took the safety off, aimed and fired off 6 rounds in a fraction of a second. Far too fast to even be a reaction to seeing a gun. Something is off here. It's almost as if his gun was already unholstered, with the safety off, and in his hand already. Think before you speak.

If the man answering the door knew and saw it was the Cops, and answered with a gun in his hand whether pointed down or not, that was not a smart move by the victim. But it's a sad situation all around. The Cop a little overly aggressive, but I would think he was trained to shoot in a situation like that. He's assuming the victim was dangerous from the woman's account, and assuming the man may quickly pull that gun up and kill him. The main issue I think is the story from the woman, and leading the Cop to this apartment, did she give false info, was there a different motive behind what she told cops. It's just a situation that shouldn't have occurred.

The police officer or sheriff's office is responsible for the investigation of an incident that occurred two weeks ago. He should at least be responsible for his own actions.
