Sorry to break it to you, but you are wrong. The highest amount of torque u can get out of those drills is actually in speed one. It's all about gear ratios, highest speed doesn't mean highest torque, actually its the other way round. Same as your manual car, when you are going uphill you shift down to a lower gear to get more torque to wheels. Both of those drills can get those lags in no probs in speed 1. Try it out, you will be surprised. Keep up the good work tho, love the channel!
I mentioned this to someone else who pointed it out, I was not focused when I spoke, and was thinking the opposite, because speed 1 is the slowest speed, and peed 3 is the fastest speed. So I meant to say I wanted to just lower the speed setting, which raises the torque.
@@fatjoecanadian81 Easy to criticize from the peanut gallery. A lot of work goes into creating this content and one video consists of multiple scenes and angles all stitched together so it’s easy to get distracted.
Jeff, the hammer mode is not for screwing in screws. It is used with a masonry bit for drilling through masonry products. The hammer mode applies downward force in pulses allowing you to drill through masonry with the correct bit. A impact, applies torsional force in pulses, which helps your screw in things. So remember: Hammer - Downwards force (Break) Impact - Torsional Force (screw)
Yes, I've been using hammer mode for years to drill holes for our Tapcons. We play with the drills in many modes during reviews to show people how they react.
@@jeffostroff --- If I lived in your area I'd let you borrow my Power Detect hammer drill , I got it 2 days before I heard about the FlexVolt Advantage tools...lol...👍🛠🖖
Well according to DeWalt the flexvolt advantage is 1219 unit Watts out and the power detect is only 1050 out so the advantage is going to be way more powerful as the power detect is way more powerful than and 996 at 840 unit watts out. You can definitely tell between the 996 and power detect. I mix concrete with my power detect
@@jeffostroff ok, that makes no sense. I’ve been using this model for a few years and always leave it on the most powerful setting. The trigger alone is sensitive enough to allow precise control on delicate things or full on power.
Junk. Hardware store tools are garbage and Milwaukee is the best. Get your tools from a contractor supply store. Hardware stores are for home owners not contractors
Tool isn’t being used correctly... 🤦🏻♂️ drill is telling you to put it in gear 1, in drill mode not hammer... and the yellow charger is 8amp charge, fan cooled, presuming it’s a DCB118...
Jeff, thanks to you I just scored a great deal on the 20 volt DCD 996, and 887 impact combo, for $205 at Lowes. It varies in price from store to store. Lowe’s needs to get their stuff together, seriously. A store like an hour and a half from me had it cheaper than my local store, but My local store price matched it. Item no. 607802. Thanks 👍🙏🇺🇸
The clutch is disengaged when drill mode is selected XR does not mean the motor is brushless, it’s just a marketing gimmick ‘Extreme Runtime’ Speed 3 is the highest speed setting but has the lowest amount of torque
Bro @ around 24:50 ish you're drilling lags with the clutch engaged. You do realize you're supposed to bypass the clutch for heavier jobs like that (without going into hammer mode)? Just a bit frustrated when I was watching to visualize the power difference and instead you start comparing identical clutches is all.
I know, we were fighting a thunderstorm blocks away and rushing like crazy did not have time for a proper comparison, I plan to do another video that just tests the 2 drills using the right modes.
Yes I definitely misspoke because the #1 setting is the highest torque, but it is the slowest speed. these Freudian slips can be a bear. Working out in 95 degree heat with 65% humidity really does take a toll on my brain, you should see how many times I have to stop and restate something!
Great video! Just had 2 quick comments: 1) Both drills use an electronic clutch. When it “gave up” driving the lag on #11, that was only because it hit its torque cutoff. Would have been interesting to see the lag driven in standard drilling mode. 2) The yellow DCB118 fast charger is actually an 8 A-h charger, not a 3 A-h. Unfortunately, they are actually including a slower charger (6 A-h) with the DCD999. Between that and it being made in China (along with the identical DCF887 that is also included with the DCD996 kit but made in the USA), it was just a little disappointing to see. The only other 8 A-h Dewalt charger is the 4-bank DCB104. The DCB104 will also charge 12-volt MAX batteries, which is extremely versatile and nice on a big fast charging system. Dewalt recently released a new 12 A-h charger (DCB1112), and that is now their fastest charger. It does look like Dewalt has one other new kit combo version of this drill: DCK2100P2 (vs the DCK2100D1T1 tested here). The tools are the same, but they include the faster DCB118 charger and two 5 A-h XR batteries instead of the slower charger, a 2 A-h and a FlexVolt battery. It’s nice they have the faster charger in that kit, but not including the FlexVolt battery kind of defeats the purpose of this new drill…
I was mostly goofing around and didn't have time to do a more planned out Test and was a thunder shower blocks away from my house so I was really being rushed and right after I did that scene we had to pack it up so we do plan to revisit this and do more thorough test
Yes, I was really rushing because there was a huge thunder shower coming up the street, and I had about 5 minutes after that scene until we got slammed. I want to do another video that focuses just on them going head to head.
Power Detect has a 1070 uwo vs 1200 uwo. Power Detect has a 8 amp charger vs 6 amp charger. And of course comes with a 8ah 20v battery vs 6/2 ah flex volt battery. So on paper you get a better drill on Home Depot, but you get a better charger and battery with (for 20v use) at Lowe’s. Drill speeds are the same with both.
Absolutely, the Power Detect line is a way Better Deal , as of right now the FlexVolt Advantage bare tools are $199.00 each (except the hammer drill kit ) and the Power Detect Kits with battery and charger are $279.00 , I'll pay $79 more for a 8.0ah battery and fast charger all day long....👍🛠🖖
Looks like the same tool just uprated software. Still a great value because they are giving you a 60v battery, that if needed you could move to the 60v line any time.
Does the grey battery do anything different on the 999 vs the yellow version? They have the same number if I recall. That's a bigger question as they claiming on an item with the same number. I know the grey has 18650s, and normally the yellows have 21700. Also, can it do that lag drive with a regular 5 or 6 vs the Flex6?
XR does not mean its brushless mate. It just stands for extreme run time. XRP (extreme run time and performance) has been round since the NiCad Brushed Platform. Also you would of been better off using drill mode and speed 1 for driving those coach screws (lag screws) in as it has more torque in that setting and no clutch. Would of drove them in easily.
@@jeffostroff yeah because all there new battery gear is brushless now smh.... It had XRP on it when they where brushed NiCad so the gimmicks been round pre brushless gear.

All specs seem to be exactly the same for both hammer drills, accept the new DCD999 Flexvolt Advantage hammer drill has 1219 Unit Watts Out compared to my older DCD996 with 820 Unit Watts Out. that extra output power is the only differentiator I could find.
The DCD998 Power Detect from Lowes has only been out since May. Here in the states, this DCD999T1 kit is not even on the sales floor yet, I made a stock clerk climb for this one. So hopefully they will be available in the UK soon.
I enjoy watching your video what you're displaying here make a lots of sense, but what I don't understand at some point of the video you have a regular 20 volts battery on the dcd996...and at some point you a 20 volts flex volts battery,so my question is what battery originally comes with the dcd996
The regular 20 Volt battery comes with that drill when you get it in a kit. I just had the flexvolt battery there I use whatever battery I have within my reach at any given time they all work period if you put a flexvolt battery on it it will treat it as a 20 Volt battery.
I just bought this kit at the Depot for $199.00 yesterday. But black flex volt battery , same charger , and no bag , so what. The drill feels nice. Haven’t used it yet.
Mal men, la maquina te entrega el maximo torque en modo perforacion, en rotomartillo solo aumenta la velocidad y la fuerza baja, porque el golpeteo hace todo. Looks like the DCD999B bare tool $179 and some bundle DCD999BW606C overpriced at $358 USD that looks the same as what is supposed to be like the DCD999T1 kit is up on the HD Website now. There is a Bundle Hammerdrill/Impact Driver Kit also that is In Store only that looks really good for $369 and is known as the DCK2100D1T1 which includes the DCD999T1 contents including the Flexvolt 6Ah battery and DCF887 and 2Ah Compact Battery and 6 Amp charger/bag. Wish the Border was open to drive to the Niagara Falls, NY store. Just noticed the DCD999T1 is up too for $279 and store only it seems. Damn, I have a US Mailbox in Niagara Falls, NY too that cross ships into 2 Toronto Canada locations for pickup and none of the better kits that are online to ship. Hopefully HD Canada stores get them up soon. Although since I already have the Flagship Flexvolt Mitre Saw I could possibly get the bare tool, but don't want to possibly use 1 of the 2 batteries out of that setup and would like a 3rd one overall in the system.
@@jeffostroff Yes but I need it to be shipped to the USA mailbox first. The kit with the battery or the combo kits are not able to ship as it is in store for now.
@@jeffostroff OK they are in Canada HD store now. There is a special and the bare tools look expensive at $299 each but for $299 CDN buy the new Flexvolt Battery/Charger for $299 CDN and get the bare tool free. Running there tomorrow morning.

I will post my own little You Tube Video with still shots of the display to help the Canadians out that are looking for the lastest Flexvolt 6Ah battery. I might check another could of Home Depots to see if newer batteries are in the other kits as it seems the battery does not have part number revisions between them.
Hey, thanks for the video. What's the name of that hex head bit you were using? General name or specific model, I need this kind of thing, but I don't know the proper English term for that. Thanks!
@@jeffostroff Thank you for the quick reply. Correct me if I'm wrong, but in this case, the adapter was connect to a regular driver (999), right? Because I saw many of these adapters for Impact drivers and I was wondering if I can just use them with a regular driver too.

I bought my 996 before the 999 was released, i think maybe 4 years ago, i use it everyday for mixing drywall mud, set on 1. Ive never had a problem with it, mixes without stopping. I used the 6ah battery, once in a while battery died by end of day, but ive 2 batteries so no big deal. Got a 10ah battery for a super price, now never dies. I know dewalt makes a mud mixer, but its a 60v, and heavy, and expensive. No regrets buying the 996.
If you are not going do do really heavy drilling into concrete all the time, then you can get by with the 996. As for Power Detect vs Flexvolt Adavantage, I think they are one and the same, and it boils down to which kit can you get for the best price. Either of these drills will serve you well.
@@jeffostroff Just an fyi the power detect is rated at 1072 uwo and the flexvolt advantage is as you know 1219 uwo other than that i dont think there are any diffrences. Thanks for the quick video
@@jeffostroffSometimes when turning counterclockwise, the drill or bit comes loose from the chuck. Even if I run the machine counterclockwise without resistance in position 2 at full throttle and then suddenly release the switch, this sometimes happens too. I think the chuck on the 999 is the same as on my 996 and will have the same problem. I once had a Dewalt 796 with the same problem. I immediately sent it back and Dewalt replied that it had to do with the electronic brake.(google translate)
Next time put it in drill mode , it overrides the clutch settings and gives you full torque. As well as doing that you could have put it into lower gear, hammer mode doesn't do anything other than impact for concrete drilling.
This is a 20v tool, not a FlexVolt tool. So yes, it can use a 20v battery. And ‘Advantage’ Line are 20v tools that take advantage of the Flexvolt batteries. Which is how they get their name. I figured it out b/c the 60v FlexVolt Circular saw is more powerful than the 20v Flex Advantage Saw. This kit was on sale for $199. I regret not buying it.

Made in China kills it. I know a lot of those global parts come from China for the other drills, but at least Americans are employed to put them together.
17:08 is when we started the testing. you don't understand what a tool review is, we show everything on the tool, and why it is different from prior models.
There will be more stuff coming soon, I really needed to rush this one out since it is breaking news on a new tool, and rain really messed up my schedule.
XR on the Dewal totals refers to the motors being brushless which are more efficient and that equals better battery life. The XR line of batteries according to DeWalt will last us last 33% longer than the 20v "max" line of batteries of the same size.
not sure if its been mentioned.. XR.. extra runtime.. i have XR brushed tools. it will always have brushless stamped in the handle when brushless.,, great video buddy.. UK viewer...
I assume all the tools are made in China unless it specifically states on the box made in USA, but even then they have an* in it usually says made with globally sourced parts.
I feel like all this dewalt stuff is getting confusing. I don’t understand why Lowe’s and home depot can’t both just sell flex volt. Flex volt works great.

Hi Jeff, I'll be interested to see a video using the DCD999 drilling into concrete. Until last week, I've been using my 18v dewalt drill from 2005 and it did a decent job but finally decide to go with the latest and got the DCD999. After trying it out I was surprised that 1) it seemed to drill roughly to the same depth as my 18v and 2) it became extremely hot. Hot enough that it was hard to hold the handle. Really curios if you will have similar experience
to be fair combi drills like this really arent intended for hard materials like concrete or engineering brick, they simply dont have the impact energy, I get that in a pinch it will do the job but you are working the tool hard, better to get a cordless sds, you will have a much better time!
Thank you@@TheMingilator. Totally valid point. I didn't want to spend the extra bucks for SDS just for 5-6 holes. The reason I expect it to work for "pinch" cases is because there are plenty of videos using the dcd996/8 for concrete but because the 9 is new there aren't any
@@TheBestestX1 dont get me wrong I've an older 996 (with that aweful electronic clutch) and used it once or twice for concrete but even that wouldn't touch engineering brick the sds was only a couple of hundred quid (dcd273) and it eats concrete for breakfast I've actually ran a 25mm drill with it through concrete block it got through with little drama
Very detailed review of the new DCD 999. I would love to see a comparison between this and the power detect, the 996 (old model) and the gen 3 milwaukee. Pieces of advice the hammer drill mode isn’t necessarily the strongest setting of the drill. Only should be used when drill into concrete. For lags into lumber stick to the drill mode only.
For the love of Tools stop using hammer mode!!! Just pretend like it doesn't exist until you are using a masonry or concrete bit. I don't think these drill settings mean what you think they mean.
Thanks, I'm using the Nikon Z6 camera but the kicker here is the lens for that boceh look, I'm using their newer Z6 50 mm f1.8 lens. It is that f1.8 that gives you that awesome pop on the subject in focus foreground, while the background is blown up. I have the lens set almost all the time at f 1.8 when filming me or closeups of the tools
it had alot to do with the set up as well that skinny 1/4 socket holder ate up all the torque transfer, had that been a 1/2 inch it likely would not have had a problem.
@@jeffostroff thank you so much for the reply. Do you really think they differ a lot. If I could score a deal with the gen 1 battery and use it on the 999. Would it be too bad of an idea?
I agree 100%. There was another video explaining the "differences and similarities" of the two. It appears that this is another marketing Gimmick being played on the consumers by SB&D, in order to satisfy the supposed "exclusive" tool sales deal/contracts they have between the 2 large box stores.
Only noise similar to that I hear is almost a grinding noise if it is set to hammer mode. That's the hammer action. But in normal drill mode, you should not hear clicking.
Rotating display stand, very fancy Jeff. Thanks for the review, seems to be a lot of interest in both of these drills right now with the 999 being new and the 996 being clearanced in some kits recently.
Hello Jeff, I was looking at buying a Dewalt and have been familiarizing myself; checked on their site, a half dozen or so contractors who did videos like yours...then called Dewalt; then HD and Lowes (the reps at the local store were precious little help, some were not sure what Flexvolt is), so finally just stumbled on you, great video, I have subscribed. I am getting ready to head over to check up top for "new item" or "no home" for the Dewalt 999T1...quick query, where should I look for one of you "infamous" 10% Lowes Coupons? also, any opinion if the kit which includes the DCF 887B? Thanks and I will see you soon.
Donald We are currently telling people not to buy that kit the reason is since I put up that video, Home Depot put up a new Black Friday tool deal involving the flexvolt advantage tool only tools where if you buy one of the tools by itself , they will give you the free flexvolt battery with the charger so now you would only be spending $179 instead of $299 just keep in mind they are giving you the older flexvolt battery free not the newer flexvolt battery which you would get in the kit. This may or may not make a difference but some people are really sticklers about getting the latest greatest battery for whatever reason. Hello again Jeff, That was one quick response. Thanks for for the speedy, educational and certainly helpful response. I had seen your video about the sale (you are holding a store score card) a day or so ago; I am going to watch that later this evening. I flipped through your site’s, “about”, community, playlists, etcetera. This is definitely a good spot for me. DIY, with entertainment, and not the contracting bit. Had I found you sooner I could have binge watched your videos through the FIRST lockdown. Thank you for the advice and great links. I think I will do as you say and do the buy one get one. I can make do with the “old” battery and get the “new” one in a few months when it is then old and on sale. Given this is such a good opportunity with the buy one get one let me bother you one further time...for now. There is much commentary in my recent research that the 999 is the best presently and “blows away” the others, but for smaller jobs perhaps the smaller impact driver (dcf887?) a good idea? One of them said that is the only flexvolt adaptable driver. If so, what other tool would you suggest for that buy one deal? Or would you get the set that is displayed on your video fairly recently where you are standing next to it, I guess in your yard, making the “is this for real” (not sarcastic version) look? Thanks again. I will see you this evening. A few episodes anyway. Best, Donald
