We got screwed by this new policy in July 2019. Disney was placing these holds daily and I would then apply the gift card, however they would not release the hold. They then would place additional holds for new charges, even though there were already outstanding holds that would have covered the new amounts. They ended up holding double the amount of gift cards that i applied. I unfortunately needed the credit card for a rental car and our next stop on our adventure, so I had to remove the credit card within a few days of Disney starting this so that I could use at our next stop. Disney took 5 days to release the holds! We need to rethink how we use gift cards and the magic band/credit card going forward....

It's exactly industry standard, Becka you're 100% right. And...I agree...I miss the free resort parking too. (Not that I often rented a car, but...it's a bummer)

DisneyKittee totally agree! It seems like a charge they could go without doing. Or maybe up the hotel price and make it seem like we’re getting it for free😂😂

I think this is a great idea! I’m sure there have been scammers out there who have lived it up and then not had the funds . Which in turn makes our prices go up. I use gift cards so I’ve not had to worry ( not using my magic bands to pay though) CC but thank you for letting us all know!! ❤️

This sounds reasonable! I think the only slight inconvenience would be if you charge with the magicband and then want to pay using gift cards, which in that case I think it'd be easier to just pay for everything using gift cards. That's what I did for my last trip :D Thanks for the update!

This seems fair for sure - I never use my MagicBand for purchasing. I like using my card or Apple Pay, personally. P.S loving the pin boards in the back😍

is the hold removed the day before when you pay for your charges ? or will it take an additional 3-5 days for the holds to be removed?

HI Diva, it's no different then renting a car. Most-likely some people accrued charges and Disney was stuck holding the bag. I am a financial advisor written off bad debts is no fun for companies and even worst for the consumer who pays there bills. However Disney has to protect its assets. Informative video.

Hi Coral! I have no issue with this policy, as you said it is normal for hotels to do this. The holds fall off within 7 days, usually shorter.. One question I have on the gift cards for magic band purchases. I was under the impression that you could pre-load the magic band with money to be spend, I believe that is what my brother did with his kids. He pre-loaded $100 on each of their bands and that is all they got for souvenirs and extra food purchases while they were in the parks. Couldn't you just apply the gift card at the beginning of the stay and then Disney works off that balance before charging your credit card? This way you don't have to go to the front desk teh day before you left? Ken

That's not the way Disney is making it sound. That said, might a cast member at the front desk be able to do this at the beginning of your stay to preload magicbands? Maybe? But the information we're receiving now is that Gift cards need to be used to pay for charges at the end. If I hear anymore about this I'll certainly let you know Ken. Thank you for sharing this!

We don’t use credit cards...only debit cards. We are planning on using gift cards to pay for everything. Do you think these holds would overdraw our account even though we plan on paying with gifts cards before we check out?

If you're planning on paying with disney gift cards, there is no need to put a credit card on your file. With no credit card on file there will be no holds, you're all set.

Thanks for giving us greater understanding about this. I have never used my magic band to pay for gratuities or park purchases. I have always just used cash or my debit card for each individual transaction, at the time of purchase. I only used magic bands as my door key, park entry, get on rides type of situation. I guess I will continue to handle things the same way. But like others, the wording threw me off for a moment. As far as the parking goes, if you stay for 5 nights and accrue a little over $100 in parking fees, will they hold $200 (for a spell) before you check out?

Yes, that's exactly what it sounds like to me regarding parking fees. Just a hold, then upon checkout your card would be charged the actual price.

This might be a silly question... but if you have a Disney dining plan, and do not put a card on file.. can you still use your magic band to “pay” for the meals on your plan?

I'm assuming the answer is yes since your credits are associated to your magicbands, but you would have to pay for gratuities with a credit card at sit down meals. That was a good question, not silly at all!

So when I go in August. I don’t plan on linking my credit card to the magic bands. Do I still have to pay a security deposit for the hotel room. We are staying at art of animation

What about tips. We have the Disney dinning plan but last time signed and added a tip. At the end of the trip we paid for all the tips. Will tips put a hold on our card? We plan to get an extra gift card to use for these tips this time.

If you wanted to add a tip onto your magic band you'd need to have a credit card associated with your band, and yes it would then incur the holds. If you wanted to just pay with gift cards then you wouldn't have a hold.

I would check with your bank what your daily spending limit is so with the hold you don’t accidentally get denied because you’re over your daily limit.

Parking fees for guests with vehicles are charged at the end of the stay, too.

What about debit cards? I always put my debit card on my reservation. Will the money be reimbursed at the end of the stay?

Great question, and I should have mentioned this in my video. When asked about using a debit card, disney answered this "Guests will be charged only for what they actually spent and any authorization holds in excess of the balance due will be released."

@@CoralJoyTravel we charged 1600. On our magic bands tied to our debt card...Disney charged 3200.00 to our account. It has been 4 days since returning from Disney world, our account is still frozen and no one at Disney billing can tell us why.....HELP!!! NOT HAPPY
