Short tour of our Sprinter van's newly updated bike slider tray where we have our new trail mountain bikes stored in the van's "garage" located under our bed.
Following on from the original bike slider tray tour, in this video, Karl explains how we currently have our new MTBs set up and mounted onto the tray. Karl also discusses the pros and cons of this setup, as well as things we still want to improve or upgrade in the future.
As these bikes use the newer style 110x15mm boost "through axle" system for attaching the front wheel to the forks and they have wider handlebars, we had to rethink how the bikes would be placed and attached to the tray.
In the end Karl figured out a way to DIY a thru-axle fork mount for the bikes using ~$3AUD worth of materials from the local hardware store, instead of spending $80-100 buying a set of brand-name fabricated mounts.
The bikes are both 2020 model Trek Roscoe 8s which are 27.5+ hardtail trail MTBs. They are a great compromise for vanlife as they are very capable and comfortable bikes for MTB trail riding due to their components, design and larger tyres. But they are also low maintenance and suitable for short commutes and urban utility rides as they do not have rear suspension and the front air forks lock out.
We'll do another video on the future and discuss these bikes and the pros/cons of having MTBs vs urban/commuting bikes for full time vandwelling.

What do you think? MTBs or commuting bikes in a van home on wheels?

I noticed the rails of the sliding tray stick out a few inches past the bottom board. I would extend the bottom board out to meet the end of the rails. That way, no one would get jabbed or caught by it. Also, it would add a bit of strength to the end of the tray so the end of the rails would be less likely to get bent, etc.

That was an intentional design, not an accident. This tray was originally designed for road bikes and offset back. Didn't need the last few inches, so chopped it off to save weight.

If you had the right drill you could drill a hole in the pine block and glue or press fit the aggi pipe into the block. You could also cut long oval shaped holes in the bottom board where the tyres sit, these two changes could give you a couple cm's of extra clearance and you could put the helmets on the seats.

We've got the tools, but the fork block needs to be a few cm high so that there's space to put in the tool to undo the thru axle. The helmets are pretty bulky and they definitely wouldn't fit on the seat even with the fork lowered a bit. Haven't figured a perfect solution out yet, but will get there eventually. Thanks for the ideas and comment 👍😎

@@ComfortablyLost I'm interested in what tool you have for your through axel. I have quick release, so I can't picture it. MTB for sure in a van!

The 110x15mm Stealth Maxle has a 6mm hex key socket, so we use our multitool to open it up and release the axle from the fork. You can get a quick release style thru-axle, but they also need some space to spin them around to open up the axle.

Love the setup for the MTB's. Very clever idea. I wonder if your setup could accomodate 2 Electric MTB's? I've seen another couple (Ladi & Margaret on RU-vid) who have 2 high performance MTB's stored in their Van garage, however to make enough room they have their double Bed on 4 hydraulic lifters which can raise & lower the bed height to make it easier to physically get in their garage to get their bikes in & out of the back. Their bikes are left assembled, no need to take Front wheel off. Obviously their Bikes do weigh more than normal bike. Have you consdiered or would you consider a Hydraulic lift system to raise/lower bed height? Love your videos, hope to see some more online.

Haven't considered it as there's no use for it - just added weight, expense and complications. We could easily have eMTBs in the van, they use the same thru-axle design on the front fork. The only difficulty would be having to lift up a ~22kg bike compared to a ~15kg bike. For a strong person, it's still easy enough to do. The tray can take the weight. There's also newer light weight eMTBs now that are under 17kg - but they cost a small fortune.

I'd love a link to that pop-up seat post! That thing is super convenient! Cheers.

They are called dropper seat posts. Available through dozens of different brands to suit all types of bikes. Give your local bike shop a visit and they can measure your seat post size and hook you up with the correct model.

Nothing wrong with the way you mounted the saddle clamps and the woodblocks but you could drill right through the blocks and use bolts which would let you move the saddle clamps further out to the edges.

Yes - correct. If the fasteners end up coming loose we'll do that, but for now they're still rock solid and using the self tapping fasteners was much faster and cheaper to install. Thanks for watching! :)
