We have only bought supermarket own "Doritos" for years. Offered them around to friends at BBQS and other gatherings, and nobody has committed on them. I would call that a result for the cheap ones.

The packaging is as it should be. The bags contain nitrogen to prevent the chips/crisps from going stale and to create an 'air' cushion to prevent them from getting squashed.

That’s great, I do find that own brand or off brand crisps - I know these are different - but I’m yet to find an off brand crisp that matches Walkers, I have tried and I’ve wanted to like the off brand / own brand but so far haven’t been able to!
What's made me chuckle the most is that with yellow packet Gate being such a controversial thing at the moment that the doritos a non poor person's brand is also bright yellow 🤣 great vlog and no way would I be paying £5 for chips & salsa 👍
There used to be a UK supermarket chain in the 80’s called finefare, it sold its own branded products but also sold quite an extensive budget range called yellow pack. They had a full aisle just for yellow pack lines , it was a sea of yellow. They also did pack your own which had barrels of loose product that you popped into a bag and got weighed, the majority were from top tier brands and great if you were on a tight budget, you could just get a few teabags or a little sugar to tide you through.
Interesting result. People should try the own brands. The truth is we can all get stuck with buying what we know so it's nice to venture out and try other substitutes just in case we like them and save a bit of money. I've tried the supermarket own brand corn chips but only like them for nacho base or with chilli. Not on their own for snacking but still in trying them, I discovered that at least 🙂
At a time when shipping costs are increasingly high, caring about a couple of broken Doritos over the space the bags take up with all the excess air is a bit silly. But if that's what you care about I guess that's why you're paying 5 times as much
I agree and aldi do some deritos , aldi do there own too and they are nice , and don't have as much salt as the others . Put some dip with them and see what you think 🤔 I think they are the same price as the essential range from asda 🙂
The black spots on Doritos are - as you surmise - burnt bits from how they cook them. I can forego that little luxury if it means I can get proper nachos with melted cheese and salsa on the cheap. Thanks for cluing me in on this Gareth.
Just a thought, when you do your excellent food comparisons and have items that have differing weights you can easily obtain the actual cost difference. So if you were to do the maths based on the cost of the Doritos packet the Asda packet would of cost £1.66 packet, if they were priced per gram as the price Doritos charge per gram. I'm sure you can work out the mathematical formula, just a bit of simple division and multiplication when you get different weights. Love the videos, spot on and we always watch with a bit of better light too 😎😁

Yes the flamin hot doritos are fantastic, if only they put the same heat on the chilli heatwave flavour ,I'd be in heaven, let's start a campaign to make it happen 😋
There are naturally some top brands that are worth buying over own brand but of course we've had decades of advertising telling us this brand is best . I prefer asda beans over heniz for a start
With chips (imo) you just want a nice crunch because you're usually dipping them into stuff and that's your main flavour ....if your scooping up chilli or dipping them in salsa or melting cheese over them you just want a nice crunchy bite. Flavoured 1's are different because your looking for the flavour then (,the hot 1's are great but yeah they are pricey)
I'm not a fan of crisps and suchlike snacks, only having them at parties to be polite, I don't think I have even been into the aisle with the crisps and snacks in, however it is nice to see that you don't have to pay over the odds for a reasonable treat.
Wanted to try the cheap Doritos but they were out of stock so hubby got me a 6 pack of ready salted crisps to try. Now I'm a die hard kettle chip fan but I loved the flavour of these cheap crisps 😋 wayyyy tastier than walker's. Can't wait to try their Doritos.

With the expensive bag the air in the bag is a gas which is also put into crisp bags to help keep them fresh for longer. Did you also know that Iceland have launched an essentials range as well, they are moving with the times and the big brands are going to suffer.
the wife went to asda, she saw yellow labelled bacon....and she bought it. we had bacon, egg and cheese muffins. have to say it was so thick and tasty bacon

Props to the doritos you can easily get oil from sunflowers, the same cannot be said of rapeseed(canola) it requires intense chemical processing to be obtained to the point it is clearly NOT food
Got an update for you ol' chap. I bought a pack of Asda cheapos and got a very plastic-style aftertaste. Probably something to do with the rapeseed oil.
Keep a few back so you can do the dip comparison, Doritos vs the home brands. I can't bring myself to pay £2.50 for a pot of Doritos salsa when Aldi is so much cheaper.
I failed to mention in my post the other price scenario, if Doritos were to use the price per gram that Asda use, then the Doritos packet would only cost 65p a packet. That gives a much better comparison of each packet and price and how very expensive the Doritos are per packet, maybe it's the sunflower oil that is more expensive than the rapeseed oil 🤔😁
Another great review Gaz 😊I don't think that these are new,but you should try walkers Max strong jalapeno &cheese crinkle cut crisps they are pretty hot ! And on the packet it's says 'perfect with beer' ,I think you'll like em' 👍
Here in Texas I never, ever buy Frito-Lay brand. We have excellent store brands, but being next to Mexico, we have several fine, less-expensive independent brands too. Plus, I wouldn't want thicker, heavier chips for stuff like nacho cheese dip. Frito-Lay is determined to make our British friends as fat as we are as a nation. Great video!
Can anyone recommend a really nice salsa dip? The one I used to love (Santa Maria) has had it's jalapeno chilli content reduced from about 3% to 0.07%. Yes 0.07% That's not a typo. It's now just tomatoey water.
Good video, nice to see normal people doing these review/comparison videos. I personally will buy the Doritos but generally only when they're on offer, as the cost of a sharing bag with a dip is extortionate. if not on offer then I'll get the mid range ones, crisps are one of those things that you can tell by the taste/consistency when they're cheap. I'd love to see more of these videos, comparing supermarket products, but what I'd like to add is that I'd find it more helpful and entertaining if you were to compare a cheap a mid range and a premium option aswell. Any tips for finding LIGHTLY salted beer snacks is much appreciated feller, as I totally agree that most big brands are far too salty. Finding lightly salted peanuts or cashews seems to be an impossibility, though Tesco brand aren’t bad.
Well there's a price difference reason right there. The Doritos are fried in Sunflower oil which has quadrupled in price over the last 6 months because of the Russian and Ukrainian war. Rapeseed oil is very cheap in comparison. I like Doritos but not their dirty MSG flavoured varieties. The cheapies are never going to be perfect in shape, but perfect for a beer budget. You can find MSG naturally in tomatoes, cheeses, yeast and some other things like that. If you wanted to make it yourself you would use the same process to make vinegar, soy sauce and yogurt so don’t be afraid of it mate you probably already eat loads of it. I personally find it banging when I made egg-fried rice!
@@IreliLuvSlipknot I know it's naturally occurring, but when it's added??? The amount added is not disclosed and therefore can be Too Much for some. Have you noticed that foods with added MSG are very high in sodium. Some exceed the daily recommended daily salt intake ☠️, while others are more than half. What we eat that's processed and flavour manipulated, we become in health. People don't die from food, it's how much you eat of it.
Gareth hello again from Perth Australia 🇦🇺. I was thinking maybe you could start using your air fryer for not just re-heating food and actually make your own crisps/tortilla chips/and the like? Honestly so easy go on line there are quite literally 100’s of things to do in those cookers. It’s fun, cheaper and you can add what ever flavours you want without the nasties. Also you can freeze tortilla dough. Just a thought. You could have a trial run anyway if it doesn’t work out who cares 🤷🏻♀️it’s entertaining and that’s the whole point surely? Doritos 93p per 100g Asda 24p per 100g I mainly eat them grilled with some grated cheese and a sprinkle of cayenne on top, so I would never be able to tell the difference.

I strongly recommend Aldi's chilli tortilla chips for £0.69. Yes they are not Doritos level of flavour but I was so impressed with the flavour and you still make a great saving.
Another awesome comparison as always! Just noticed this morning that Snacksters are now doing a box of 20 frozen Chicken Nuggets for £3 in Asda that you can oven cook or microwave!! Whatever next 🤣
I love the Doritos dip, the hottest one. I can’t seem to find an alternative for that. I will give the Asda chips a go. Btw the black bits on Doritos are an indentation from the rack they are put onto when cooking. I worked in walkers snack foods where they also made wotsits and quavers.
The Doritos are probably well good for making your own nachos with as there thick so won’t go to mush under all the cheese and salsa. You should give home made nachos a shot on one of your lives. Go well with a few jars 😉
Like Holy freakin' Dragon suggests , buy some small cheap corn tortillas and cut into wedges , either coat in some chilli oil and bake or shallow fry in chilli oil and voila your spicy chips.
Asda even do the tangy cheese flavour , I get Asda’s for Nachos 👍🏻 to be honest once smothered in cheese , salsa , guacamole and sour cream you’d never know what was underneath 😂
