I was fortunate to do the bike ride down Haleakala twice before the ride was cut short, first by the US Park Service, and now this. The first time I left my hotel room in Honolulu vacant for a night while I booked a second room on Maui specifically so I could do the downhill bike ride. I never saw any of the problems mentioned. The bike tour company had us in a small group of about 12 and when cars came up behind the group we were pulled over to a shoulder so the cars could pass. I wonder if any of those politicians who voted for the route cut have ever done the ride. Bet not.
Im a cyclist but i can see the need for this. At some point you have to consider the locals and saftey. Hopefully they can find a nice balance. Not totally removing it Hopefully
One single company close to 200 riders a day, there are many companies operating on that single road, over 1000 people a day. Absolute nuisance as most of the “cyclists” never ride a bike outside their vacation. Public roads are not Disneyland for thrill seekers.
