NEW! Eco Friendly WATERCOLOUR PAPER by Hahnemuhle | Succulent painting
Hi Guys!
In this video I try out a new eco friendly watercolour paper from Hahnemuhle. Hahnemuhle recently asked me if I would like to try out a couple of new natural line watercolour papers that they've developed and I was only too happy to agree. I love trying out new art supplies and I love that this Agave paper is eco friendly and sustainable.
I really put it to the test in this video and demonstrate several of the watercolour techniques and effects I like to use in my paintings to give you an idea of how paint lays down and what the paper is like to paint on so you have a better idea of what to expect and decide if its something you would like to go ahead and buy. I also show you how used what I learned in the demo painting of a succulent so I really hope you like it and find the video useful or interesting.
Thank you so much for watching, take care and I'll see you in the next one

If you want to test a glaze you need to use some detail strokes as a first layer so you can get a true idea of how much the underlayer dissolves or moves. It's very difficult with a solid block as it all melts together. That said, if a paper lifts well it doesn't glaze well and vice versa..you can't have both, they are opposite reactions. The sizing either lets go of dry paint or holds on to it.

Very useful review, thank you very much. I imagine that this paper would be perfectly fine for most of my uses, which is very nice to know! The agave came out beautiful!

I bought a pad of the hanhemuhle bamboo paper and loved it. So beautiful. Only thing I disliked was I'd occasionally get a fiber poking out that looked like a hair. But really.. it was gorgeous despite that

A truly enjoyable video! I believe that you showed us that your techniques were no match for this new paper! A lovely painting as well. My Aunt, who lives in Arizona called that plant “Ah gah vay” she also called it a weed that I she believed certain people fermented and made Taquilla to drink! I wonder if the sizing had anything to do with the maskit going wrong? I have 3 different brands of masking fluid, no brand works on every paper! I am glad that you are doing another painting with the other paper that was sent to you, I am looking forward to watching the video! Until then, Please take care and be safe over there!

Thank you so much! I had a feeling I'd pronounced it wrong- even after looking it up- Ah gah vay sounds much better! There was no mention of sizing on this paper and being that it's vegan I wondered if it had any- sizing usually being gelatin? Anyway, it was fun to try something new and yes, I will look forward to trying the bamboo paper soon. Take care 😊

@@SarahNewburyArt If it's vegan then it has a starch or synthetic based sizing.

Thank you for the review and the lovely painting! I bought this paper a month ago at an artshop, thought it might benfun fun to try and the price was ok. Sadly I am not impressed w the quality. I have done som watercolour paintings now on it and am rather dissapointed. It didn’t matter how delicately I painted , the surface kept piling up and also soaked in more of the paint than a normal cottonpaper does after the colours had dried. I am a fairly experienced watercolourist, so I know how to handle brush and paper and I wasn’t heavyhanded. I then tried it for gouache and there it worked much better and I could build up more smoothing layers over the first one that again piled up some of the paper surface. I might, in all fairness, had got a bad pad of this paper and because of that give it a bad review. But I am not going to buy another pad to find out if that was the case or not as this first try of the agave paper turned out so dissapointing.

Thank you Charlotta- It is quite a different paper to paint on so I don't think you got a bad pad necessarily. I will be keeping it for use with gouache in future rather than watercolour paintings as it seems to cope a lot better with that!

Thank you Elizabeth! I actually looked up how to pronounce this but it seems to be pronounced differently in different countries?! Ah-gah-vey sounds much better than the way I said it! 😂😊

I wonder if this is real watercolor paper and not a mixed media paper? Lack of sizing would make it not a real watercolor right? I wonder if you have tried an animal painting? more of your usual style or subjects? Sometimes I work on a surface and it tests great, but in real world painting it does not fair as well. Just checking in again. Be well! Stay Safe over there.
