Hi Guys,
EPIK has added a new option for applying to Teach English In South Korea called EPIK PLUS (trust me its not that new, they just gave it a new name and are promoting).

Huh, maybe the plus is because you get to go to Jeju? Well, no wonder the interviewer was so happy my son asked for Jeolla-namdo as first choice (because we have family there and we are country people living by the beach here). Anyway, I hope he gets a good placement. Btw, though Jeolla-do does have a lot of coastline, a lot of it is also inland country. But you can take the bus to the beach, I expect. It’s the least developed of Korea’s regions because they had the most demonstrations against the Military regimes of South Korea’s early “democracy”, so the government didn’t bother to develop that region much. I have to agree with you, Jeju is the the plus!! Who wouldn’t want to visit Jeju while in Korea! It’s definitely on my list! That’s amazing that you guys have family here ❤️ Thank you for sharing this info on Jeolla-do I’m going to pin this comment for others who are interested in this area!

Hello. Lived in Jeollanam-do for over a decade. The region is far from under developed. Even when I lived on an island still had good access to services and good roads. Korea isn't a top down government system. Regions are in control of their own development and investment. The PLUS is if you go rural is more money and broadly speaking more relaxed work. Might end up working at a school with only a dozen or so students. I was on an island for 3 years with 40 elementary and 12 middle school students TOTAL. This gives you a relaxed work schedule compared to inner city school.

@@Drunkenmeows I’m not sure what you consider underdeveloped. It’s the LEAST developed of Korea’s regions and yes, although regional offices do a lot, you’re not going to get as far without federal funding and development is my understanding. I found it very rural in parts with Yeosu, Mapo and Gwangju being the city exceptions. It can be a tough region for expats who do not speak Korean as there aren’t many other English speakers per area. And even those who do speak some Korean can be very isolated and lonely. I’m glad if that was not your experience. I think others need to be warned though.

There was a whole argument about this Epik plus for Jeonnam and honestly I agree that there is nothing really different or special about it. All other placements are pretty much the same. If atleast there was proper compensation to work there but nope, as it looks like hardship on another level. Epik should be able to take some criticism to improve and not necessarily always take it as an attack. Since there's a demand for teachers there, they should at least be well compensated🙌. It's only fair for a place which may require one to work in 3 or 4 schools.

@@Thule_1903 the EPIK application is online. to access it you go onto the EPIK website and click apply - you are correct in that its the normal application process :) except this time there will be a button that says classification. You’ll click that and select epik plus. If you still struggling, In this RU-vid video there’s a screen shot on how you apply to epik plus

Love this....I'm a countryside girl from England and although I've loved living in cities like Winchester or Oxford which are still fairly countryside, I don't like mega overbuilt environments cities, so having this programme would suit me for the future once I've finished my current studies.

Thank you so much for the update,you explained it so thoroughly. I was really tempted to apply for this program,but the compensation isn’t that great considering that it’s in the countryside and you will most likely be teaching at 2+ schools😭😭EPIK must do better bathong

Aye I highly doubt EPIK will change any time soon. Look how long it took them to day a salary increase 😪 there is the travel allowance that they give for each additional school but it’s not a lot 😒

I completely understand 🌸 start by doing research on the EPIK plus province on this program you know for sure where you’ll be going. This way you get an idea if Jeollanam province is where you want to be. Do also go into the South Africans in South Korea group as well, this EPiK plus was posted on there yesterday, there are people that are living in that province that left some comments. ❤️

Does epik allow single mothers to come with their children?

There are teachers with the kids however Im not sure on the process. That being said, I recall someone saying they interviewed with epik and mentioned they are coming with their child. The interviewer then asked many questions around moving to Korea with their child, orientation, starting at the new school, getting settled, etc she ended up not getting to the next stage of the application process. Now I have no idea if it was the children factor or something else. So it makes me think, do people just come here on their own initially, get settled into the EPIK program and then bring their children over 💭 I’m really not sure, I’d say go onto the Facebook group South Africans in South Korea and ask on there so you can get the info directly from people who have come to Korea through epik and moved with their kids.

So, as a medical graduate you studied medicine. Your degree is in medicine. In order for you to practice medicine legally, you need to get a license to practice in the profession, right? Teaching is the exact same. You need to study education, once you graduate you then need to get your teaching license to actually teach. Now with EPIK, they will accept English teachers from any field not just licensed teachers as long as you are a citizen of one of the following countries: Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States, or South Africa. But if you are from India; EPIK requires you to be a licensed teacher to be eligible to teach under the EPIK program. In your case you are from India and a medical graduate and not an education graduate. Had you done your degree in education and got your teaching license you could apply to EPIK. But since your degree is not in education and you are not a citizen of one of the countries listed above you won’t be able to teach on the EPIK program. However, you could look into teaching in private schools (hagwons)

Hey Nkululeko, I’ve been placed in Anseong city (province gyeonggi-do). I’m enjoying my stay! Love my 2 schools (I teach at an elementary and a middle school). Don’t regret making the decision to apply and come to Korea. Advice: My first advice would be to not plan/make your decision around getting more than 1 school as this is not a guarantee that you’ll get more than one. If you are asking, is applying to teach in Korea through epik is worth it for you I’d first ask: are you currently working ? Are you set on specifically moving to South Korea or are you looking at other countries? What is the main goal for wanting to move abroad?

Hey dear since police clearance takes time I was planning to apply to EPIK in Feb 2025 for fall intake but on the website it says PCC must be dated within 6 months of contract start date I'm worried if I do a police on Feb wen applications open it might come back in march or April which is a bit late.which intake did u apply for and wen did you apply for PCC ?

Hi there, start the PCC in Aug/sep 6 month from them it should still be valid for you to leave in Feb. The key is that the PCC shouldn’t expire before you leaving for Korea. I unfortunately can’t remember the exact day I did my PCC but I counted 6 months

Hi Mayibuye, on the EPIK website under apply. You will click apply now. then Under "Classification" at the start of the EPIK online application, please select "EPIK Plus (Jeonnam)" and follow the instructions listed.- this is if you are applying directly to EPIK. If you are applying with an agency, contact your agency first before clicking the apply button on the EPIK website.

Hi Sana this shouldn’t be a problem if it doesn’t affect your ability to teach. Are you can any medication that could cause a false positive if so I’d suggest you pop epik an email or the agency you will be applying with 😋 the health check is to test for illegal substances that’s the main aim.

Hi Xoli, the late intake applications closed end of Jan for teachers that would be coming in March and April of 2023. If you are wanting to come in March of this year I'd say consider going with a hagwon. The current EPIK application which opened on 1Feb is for teachers that will be coming in August 2023

Now that I did not enquire about. You are more than welcome to pop epik an email asking. Because, the plus applications will be processed quick once you’ve been placed there’s no point continuing with epik application so my assumption is no. But do ask in case my logic is off 😋

Hi Lerato, the EPIK website does confirm one can apply and move with their dependents. I don’t know of someone who has nor have I done so myself so I wouldn’t be able to advise on the process but you can ask in the Facebook group - South Africans in South Korea

Hi Erica, 😋 everybody needs to complete the EPIK application on the website; agency applicants and direct applicants. when you apply with the agency, you start off by going on their site and filling in your details with them. They then contact you and guide you on the process of applying with EPIK. They will tell you to go onto the EPIK website to apply and select their agency. But do get into contact with them first before you go and apply on the EPIK website, they first will be checking you meet the application requirements as well as guide you with the essays, lesson plans that you will need to complete in the application . Heyyy Annah and friends. Has anyone noticed the application form literally only gives you an EPIK PLUS option. Does this mean early applicants can only go to the plus province? Or if I proceed I'll have an opportunity to select my desired city?

Hey Mpho, the EPIk application is there. Once you click the apply button, under classification you will see 4 options: 1. Direct Application 2.MOU 3.Agency 4. Epik Plus Option 4 is for Epik plus 1-3 are for Epik - you just need to select how you are applying to epik. Directly yourself or through an MOU or through an agency. Hope this helps! 😋
