Ann Lowe designed Jacqueline Kennedy's wedding dress, but her name was never mentioned in the society pages that gushed over the event. Lowe also designed dresses for major stars and helped shape American couture. Now, a new exhibit is working to make sure her impact is properly remembered. Michelle Miller reports.

You can really see the historical influences on so many of her dresses - many of them almost look like they could have been worn in early parts of the 20th century, or in various parts of the 19th century. She had a real knack for taking old styles, yet making them modern - which is not always easy to do. Women must have felt like princesses in her gowns (and I’m sure some were actually princesses). What a talent and visionary. It’s great that her story is finally being told.

The exhibit was wonderful, the gowns even more beautiful in person. Ann Lowe wasn’t just a dressmaker or a designer, she was a couturier. I wore Amsale (RIP🕊️) for my wedding. Had Ann Lowe been in business, it would’ve been a really tough decision.

Ann Cole Lowe (December 14, 1898 - February 25, 1981) was an American fashion designer. Best known for designing the ivory silk taffeta wedding dress worn by Jacqueline Bouvier when she married John F. Kennedy in 1953, she was the first African American to become a noted fashion designer. Lowe's designs were popular among upper class women for five decades from the 1920s through the 1960s. So many great African Americans pass away in poverty yet they left an amazing historical legacy i.e. Rosa Parks; Mildred Blount (miliner for all of the hats worn in the movie classic Gone with the Wind) architect Benjamin Banneker and many others. Depending on the source, I believe it was reported that Jackie Kennedy did not love her wedding dress and that it was her domineering mother’s choice and Jackie wore it at her insistence. In fact, the wedding was a partly sad occasion for Jackie because her beloved father wasn’t allowed to walk her down the aisle…again at her mother;s insistence. She was given away by her step father instead. The Anne Lowe wedding dress may not have been to Jackie Kennedy’s taste, but it certainly is mine! Her dresses are just stunning 🤩!

At 2:16 is my mom's dress. She was in a debutante ball in Nebraska in 1961 and Ann Lowe was tapped to design the dress for that year. My mom later gave her dress to a museum in Omaha who then loaned it to the Winterthur for this exhibit. My mom and I went to Winterthur to see her dress and had a personal tour from Elizabeth Way (interviewed here). Such a thrill.

It is great to give long-overdue recognition to this very talented designer. As for Mrs. Kennedy's wedding gown: Daughter Caroline stated how her mother loved the designer, but hated the cut of this particular dress.....it was not her style,, as Jackie preferred a sleeker silhouette ,and always compared her wedding dress to a LAMPSHADE!! LOL

Leave it to Karen, to speak on the negative aspect of her story. So Jackie, didn’t love her replacement gown. (Made in 10 days time. To replace the flood damaged original, also designed by Ms.Lowe.) So what. Its not like she didn’t have another wedding. 🙄

Gorgeous gowns and women looked beautiful in them. My friend and I went to the Dior exhibit at the Louvre a few years ago and the dresses would be beautiful today, as would Ms. Lowes. I look at the style and beauty of these dresses and contrast with the garbage we see today on the red carpet, see through with thong straps hanging out of the top of a skirt and do not forget the ever present nipples. I have no idea what "fashion forward " means these days.

Extravagant for sure! The one thing a fuss is being raised over is the one thing I don’t care for. All those big rosettes and other embellishments . Bows and anything else added on. So many of the pieces were already stunning in their own right, able to stand without all that stuff. My friends daughter had a gorgeous wedding gown. Her hair was pulled back and for some reason she wore a bow in it the size of 2 human heads. It looked ridiculous. I didn’t say a word. Except that she looked lovely.
