Yeah, exposed full tang knives feel real cold even through gloves (the tang doesn't warm up in the hand at minus 25, ever, I guarantee that)...I'm way up north in Sweden and the exposed full tang knives are not very good here in winter...neither are kydex sheaths for that matter, it's all leather or plastic up here...falling snow can bind a blade into a tight sheath by melting next to the body in the day/sun and then freezing up again as the temperature drops or the sun sets. I for one absolutely love the Fallkniven plastic sheaths, I think they are almost perfect for this environment (though I may be alone in that assessment). My own blades of preference are: the standard F1, the standard A1, the Peltonen M07 Sissipuukko, the Terava Jääkäripuukko 140 (yeah, I totally spelt that from memory) and the Terava Skrama...there is a pattern with the handles here and it exists for good reason too. Love your steel nerd work mate, thank you for the upload.

Agree very much. Also w your preferences. For the Peltonen M07 and M95 Sissipuukko - I have pulled a bit of bicycle rubber tube (of fitting diameter) over the handle to make it more comfortable to use without gloves.

While I do appreciate the increase in how the knife indexes itself a bit better with the slab sided construction with heavy lined work gloves, I don't think most users wear anything that thick on a regular basis. It honestly feels a little lazy on fallkniven's part because you can do the whole heavy use, full-tang design with more comfortable scales. I don't even really see a little more contouring work adding a significant cost (which people would pay) or difficulty for them.

When these get dull from use rather than edge damage, a few strokes on a strop will just about perfectly restore them. As for the coldness of an exposed tang its less of an issue than vibrations when chopping. I just have the A1pro but I did have a Becker BK2 and I found that to be the main issue.

I appreciate your taking time and your approach in these videos. My opinion is that if a person is researching a knife for future purchase, your videos should absolutely be considered. Well done, and thank you. Though I still don't know if I'm buying a Bark River or a Fallkniven at this point. Just can't make up my mind. Truth told, I will end up with both, I just have to figure out in what order. LOL. Anyway, well done, sir.

Great review Pete! I'm guessing the removable handle scales have more to do with economics...as they may wear out, it gives Fallkniven the opportunity to take more of your money by selling you replacements. Not going to stop me from adding an A1xB to the collection though :)

Well damn! I managed to sit through an entire video without commenting endlessly as I watched. Okay then: 1: Definitely NOT a kitchen knife. Glad you didn't try to cut the cheese with it (snigger, he said "cut the cheese"). 2: Definitely expensive, but it's the sort of knife I like. 3: I recall Mikkie saying the enclosed tang was really good for extreme cold weather. I'll be using this in places where the temps don't go below 11C. All good. 4: Yes, I agree. We hobbyists (not collectors in the true sense) see a knife and for some of us, the thought is, "I'd love to play with that". It's the reason I jumped on that $30 BK-2 (it's just a beast) and the $200+ Kanetsune KB-212 (because it's very different but still a tool). Sometimes the price isn't a factor in a buying decision. 5: There is no 5. Wait, yes there is. Great overview of this knife, Pete. I may well buy one in the coming months. 6: (Yes, there's a 6) I'm glad Fallkniven give you a small stone with these knives. Given that they class it as a survival knife, I would expect the Company would provide one at that price point.

After I got my A1x, I changed my view. It's definitely thicker than A1 and heavier. However, it feels more balanced in the hand than A1 which is top (blade) heavy. Also, proportion-wise, I think it has the right thickness. I still wish Fallkniven will release A1S - same as A1X but with the thickness of S1X. Also, A2X will be a nice addition.

I had assumed that it was this knife that was originally designed as the air force survival knife, the thickest one, but looking back at Petes earlier video it seems I was wrong. These thicker knives were just designed for consumers. I suppose it makes sense as I doubt any military especially air force could justify such weight for a knife.

I have found the A1X and the S1X to be the sharpest knives out of the box and to maintain. It excels at battoning, chopping, feather, and sticking, after which I would use a micro mesh pad and stroping to get it back to razor sharp. The Cos steel is fairly easy to maintain. The only issue is that the attributes that make this so great is also overkill for a simple outing. This is especially true because the sheath requires one to undo and partially remove ones belt to put on and take off. A tremendous hassle because it sits on my left hip, and a sidearm sit on the right. This is where I really appreciate my Coldsteels where their sheath can be undo by a velcro and snap button. I just came back from Another few weeks along the eastern seaboard camping and fishing. I definitely used the Fallknivens at camp, but but when hiking and fishing I prefer to take a Coldsteel. Either the SRK, or the Recon San Mai VG10. During an all day whitetail hunt I do carry the Fallkniven because I want the assurance of the Xs. So I am glad I got these knives and glad I have different knives for different occasions and purposes to enjoy. Any of my knives can do just about everything but having choices is a tremendous joy!

You have nothing else to do, so spend 4+ hours and reconfigure the edge to 17 degrees, and I would suppose the cutting performance will improve dramatically. We have seen you put edges at 17 degrees on steels and the cutting goes way up. BUT, this design speaks to me, the APO, SRK, and this A1 seem so simple and so effective. Surago act, I have experience with using my standard S1 in -25c without gloves, as they were in the tent drying. The thermorun handle works very well. Although it is crucial to add that I did not spend many minutes out with exposed hands, the handel was still warm to the touch. But my point is, the thermorun handle on the standard knives/pro really do work in Nordic climate, and the x series is clearly not marketed towards us. And yes, of course you would use gloves in temperatures that low, but it is nice to know you could use it without gloves.

The fully enclosed thermorun handles are one reason Fällkniven has been my preferred knives for hunting and outdoor for the last 20 years. Then again, I live in one of those nordic countries where it gets crazy cold. Another advantage with the fully enclosed handle is the hygiene. There’s just no place for blood and gunk to get stuck so it´s easy to keep it clean and food safe. Don´t mind them doing new things, that’s great, as long as they keep making the old style handles as well.

Ok Pete, I enjoyed the review. However, you showing up with that rather large knife with that haircut made me a bit nervous. Could we talk about that hair and how it might effect future knife reviews for a moment? Cheers, Steve

Hopefully when it's that cold, people will have gloves. So the cold handle won't matter :)

It's 2019, why Fallkniven still don't use g10 as handle scales.

If a Chinese company could make a knife of equivalent: beauty, quality and functionality and we could buy it for $100 that would be awesome. The day is coming. I've just ordered some of the Brother knives from Aliexp. in 440c and d2 with reported great heat treat/performances (I believe you have done d2 tests yourself of chinese knives with good results?). Maybe the companies like Fallkniven have had there day and chinese amazing super steel knives for a price you can sensibly use them are coming. Like you said though, would just 1% of them actually be used? That comment hit close enough to home for me that I went outside and chopped up some branches with my knife
