In this week’s episode, we discuss my new favorite way to edit landscape photos, the iPad Pro & Wacom Tablet. For the past few years I’ve been using the Wacom Intuos Pro as my editing tablet of choice for the majority of my landscape photos. And, towards the end of last year I decided to purchase myself a 12.9” iPad Pro and ever since this purchase the number of photos I edit on the Wacom tablet has been in a slow and steady decline. Now that’s not to say that they iPad Pro is a superior photo editing tool, but one things for certain..it’s a heck of a lot more fun!
In this video, I want to share with you my experience using the iPad Pro for editing my landscape photos. What I like, what I don’t like and how it compares to the Wacom tablet. Now I understand that comparing an iPad Pro to a Wacom Tablet isn’t exactly an apples to apples comparison as they are similar yet different in many ways and both cater to rather different audiences. They have their strengths and weaknesses, but both of them definitely make the overall photo editing experience more intuitive, effective and most importantly fun!
So, if you happen to be in the market for a new computer or tablet for editing your landscape photos with, I hope this week’s video provides you with some helpful information that you can apply to your next buying decision.
If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and let me know what you think in the comments below - I guarantee I'll get back to ya.
Thanks for watching everyone!

@Chris Cloud I use the desktop version of Photoshop for that until the mobile app for Photoshop improves. I think Affinity Pro allows for this though on the iPad.

I usualy - on a trip - take my 13" MacBook Pro and do the basics on it. And then backup the images on an external SSD drive. Final edits are done on the 27" iMac. I do have an iPod Pro as a drawing tool. But I haven't used it for photography. Can you get your edited images from your iPad Pro back to a computer or external SSD drive?

I used my 10.5' IPad Pro on a trip to Iceland a few months ago, I think it's a great piece of technology to use for editing if you're out in the field. I also used Affinity photo for IPad in Iceland when I needed to merge my bracketed shots together and got some really great results I think.

I use a Surface Pro 7 i7 with 16GB of ram. I have access to full desktop versions of Lightroom Classic, Photoshop, Luminar 4.2, Affinity Photo, and Affinity Publisher. I don't have to deal with any of the quirky Lightroom for iPad differences. The Surface pen feels much more natural than the Apple Pencil and it has 4,096 pressure points as well as an eraser. The Surface pen even has different tips that mimic different types of pens, markers, and pencils. Oh, the little button on the side can even be customized to do other things. Good video by the way.

I’ve been using my iPad for a couple months. I really enjoy using it for photo editing. It works so well. Mine is the air 3, I couldn’t justify buying the pro. It works with the pencil, and supports these good apps. When Im in the field, it is so much more convenient. Was just in Tennessee, and am headed back Monday doing some photo journalism following the tornado. My iPad will go with me, my laptop will stay at home

Mark, a lot if great info! I’m considering using Lightroom CC (mobile edition) for editing, but am curious as how the images imported sync between all devices (including Lightroom Classic). Could you explain your current Lightroom Catalog import workflow (i.e. how you import your images to Lightroom CC/Lightroom Classic) and how your images sync between all your devices?

I have been using the 12.9 iPad Pro to edit my photos for sometime now. Let’s hope Lightroom comes with new updates for the iPad. Lately I have also starting to use Photoshop on the ipad. It's not as great as using it on a PC, but it's useful. The healing tool is good, but then again support for filters etc is missing. Let's hope that's rectified soon.

I’m lucky enough to have both devices as well, although a different model Wacom. Although very expensive, the iPad Pro is a wonderful tool, I’ve got Lightroom installed along with Affinity photo and the still wonderful (and free) Snapseed and they all work like a dream, so fast and smooth. How fortunate we are to have such wonderful tech and amazing cameras around these days. Love it all 👍🏻

I load everything into my library in Lightroom classic on my PC. The raw files get stored on my server and I build smart previews and organize into shared collections. Then for the next weeks, months, lol I pick away at culling and editing on my home PC in LR classic, my work PC (shh) in Lightroom CC or Lightroom online, and on my iPad Pro (2nd gen) when I’m at home on the couch. I’ll have the photos from my last trip 80% done before I’m onto the next thing. Lightroom on iPad has gotten a ton better. I wish photoshop would catch up. I’d love to see HDR merging for my bracketed images and support for image stacks in general in the mobile Lightroom.

Hi Mark, great video but thought I would share my view as a printer. Both tablets are great however from a photo / digital side the Ipad is great but its not a print ready device in my view due to not being truely calibrate to media stocks and to printer performance. Using the wacom is far more adaptable and if then using this with a Eizo or full calibrated monitor means what you see is what you print. This saves a lot of money plus it also means if you are using a third party printer you can then give them print ready files. Most back lit screens print much darker than the visual image. Again great for digital viewing content. Really enjoying your videos, keep up the great work.

Thanks for the video Mark, I got a MacBook about 2 years ago, followed by an iPad and Apple Pencil a few months later, I have to say the iPad revolutionised my editing workflow, I hardly ever use my Mac now, love the screen on the iPad too. I switched to Lightroom CC (online) exclusively and haven't looked back, I only need to use the Mac to backup my Lightroom catalogue as the iPad version can't do that yet. I also find Affinity Photo excellent on the iPad, especially their "Inpainting Brush" (content aware fill) which is excellent.

I've been editing on my 2nd Gen iPad Pro 12.9, I guess close to three years now. I primarily use it for out of town gigs (though those are likely on the back burner for the foreseeable future) along with my CC account which connects to my other devices, including my iMac at home. Before the iPad, I was hauling my 15in MacBook Pro (2012) on away jobs, along with a portable SSD for backup. I have since retired my MacBook as my 2nd home rig (though I rarely use it nowadays). My experience with the iPad has for the most part been great, with a few hurdles, the biggest, the inability to attach as an external drive, of course with iOS 13, that is no longer an issue (save for a few extra steps as my Pad is the older Lightning model). My hope is that Apple, Adobe and others will soon have full-screen support for external monitors. I am actually toying with the idea of going full-blown iOS and moving away from Mac OS sometime down the line when all the ducks are lined up. While I love the Mac (FB since 1993), I believe that iOS or variation thereof is the future of computing including content editing. While I have played with Wacoms in the past, frankly, it was always an awkward experience and I simply could get comfortable using the device.

Hey Mark, great comparison. Funny, I find myself moving slowly FROM the iPad Pro/Apple Pencil and TO the MacBook/Wacom. As a landscape photographer, how do you get around the lack of luminance/luminosity masking with Lightroom Mobile? I LOVE working on the iPad, it’s such a pleasure, but I find myself using it now mostly to start out on images and then, for the ones I really want to get right, I move onto the Mac at some point. Not a bad workflow, I just keep waiting for Adobe/Apple to fill out the features on both LR and PS for iOS. Thanks again, great video.

Great video discussion on this subject. I have the iPad Pro 12.9” and pencil; and absolutely love the direct access and interaction it gives me with the image itself. The direct pencil-to-image totally eliminates the additional layer; that being the monitor. What I find the Wacom tablet absolutely indispensable for is editing in Photoshop. Photoshop for iPad is just not there yet. Far from it. A LOT of the functions and features have not yet been ported across from the desktop version; and judging by the current rate of updates, looks like it may take a little while longer. So if a fully fledged Photoshop is a major part of your workflow, you may want to hold off on replacing your Wacom tablet with an iPad. I also feel that the level of articulation and sensitivity that the Wacom solution provides is still far superior than that of the iPad and pencil equivalent. Thanks again for this video.
@MarkDenneyPhoto
@MarkDenneyPhoto 4 года назад
Much appreciated - thank you! Completely agree with everything you say. It could take over a year before PS for iPad is somewhat useable, but it'll eventually get there. I'm sure the pencil will improve overtime as well - it needs more customization options for sure.

Great tutorial, although one thing you should have mentioned is that you still can’t process HDR and panoramas within Lightroom Mobile. But if you have an iMac or MacBook it is very easy to switch between the iPad and the desktop version of Lightroom on your computer if you use the cloud based Lightroom Plan and have all of your photos stored in the cloud. For general editing, particularly portrait images the iPad Pro is more fun to use as the Lightroom app does a good job of maximising screen real estate for editing.

Thanks Mark! Lots of really good advice. One other concern I've had is blowing up the Creative Cloud storage. I'm currently doing the most basic plan, so I don't have a ton of storage in their cloud. My current workflow is to import to Lightroom locally on external disk, edit there, and I sync to Amazon for backups. I've been playing around with Lightroom on my iPad Pro when traveling to do quick edits on specific images I want to work on right away, and that's been pretty nice. I don't think I'd be able to backup everything on bigger trips though. I'd be curious to hear what you're doing for storage workflow as well.

Gladly John! I'm using the creative cloud storage plan as well, I think I have the 1TB option (I believe), but I haven't run out of storage yet. The time will eventually come though Im sure

This was such a detailed and informative video. I am so glad to find your channel. I love lightroom for my portraits and use lightroom mobile all the time to edit on the go photos taken from my iPhone or GoPro. Despite all the convenience lightroom mobile provides, I still come home and sit on my lightroom desktop version for some extensive editing. I have been eyeing on Wacom for quite some time but never really found the right one and the budget to justify the purchase. This definitely has given me a clearer mind. Lots of luck from India :)

Would you recommend the iPadPro as the sole computer for a photographer? Currently I have a two monitor setup with a 2012 MacPro and an external 12TB RAID. I like the idea of streamlining my stuff to a networked hard drive and editing from a laptop/iPad.

Hey Mark! Welcome to the iPad editing family. With sidecar you can also have your tablet be a second monitor. In Lightroom Mobile you can also create your own custom presets. What is missing is being able to push an image from Lightroom mobile to Photoshop mobile app and push back to Lightroom. For travel and outdoors the iPad is much lighter and depending on the model can be more powerful that a MacBook Pro. I have been editing this way for a year now and love doing it this way. It’s also nice to be able to sit in your bed or on your couch and edit photos versus at a desk or table with a desktop or laptop. Is it perfect? Not yet, but is getting better and better. iPadOS was also a big game changer in the iPad being more practical.

@MarkDenneyPhoto 4 года назад
Thanks Spencer! I agree with everything you said. It’s not perfect, but it sure is an amazing alternative to the standard desktop/laptop editing solution.
@stevemarson9665

You forgot to mention you can do most of the editing on the ipad with a finger and apart from losing the pressure sensitivity of the brush it's just as accurate and if anything quicker. Plus you can also export to Photoshop Fix which has does Clone/Heal as well, if not better than PS itself and returns the image to LR as a separate file for further editing. On trips I load up all my images to Photos as a back-up as soon as possible then selectively pick and edit the best in LR. On workshops I regularly manage to do most of the editing on the way back to the hotel in the car and the rest fairly quickly before dinner. Most of the others haven't even switched on their laptops by then. Also the processed images sync automatically with LR on your PC and provide a basis for further work later .... although surprisingly my home edits are rarely better than those I have done on the trip. I rename and export the images from the LR PC sync folder to my main image store so I have the home imported original and synced ipad processed image together. On the iPad I export the best processed LR images as JPG's to a folder where I keep my best shots then delete the LR ones ..... it frees up the cloud storage which is unfortunately pretty measly unless to pay a small fortune. As the iPad fills up with RAW files I delete the oldest ..... but it still provides a handy back-up of images for a year or so if you have the larger capacity SSD.... (and it saved my bacon last year when both my HDD and back-up files became corrupted). After 2 years of this I couldn't be without the iPad pro and can't understand why anyone would use a laptop. LR works almost instantaneously in comparison to on a PC, let alone the snails pace of a laptop .... plus the screen is stunning for showcasing images in comparison. Get One !

I tried an ipad pro back in october and ran into a lot of frustration, transferring files was a headache, for some reason it would only transfer about 30 photos out of about 100 , I then couldn't interact with them very well. I was afraid of getting doubles when trying to load the rest so I tried deleting the loaded images first. the Iipad said I had deleted them but when I went back into the photos app they were all still there. I tried to find some sort of setting that would really clear them out but had no luck aty all. I gave up and returned it, but it's too bad, I really wanted to be able to replace my laptop for most mobile circumstances.

Mark thanks very much for that video. I have been vacillating between various options to suit my specific requirement. I am into 4wdriving in the outback of Australia, and I have a photo tagalong trip to join, delayed from this year to next year, and we will be editing photo's on the run and I think you have sold me on the going for iPad as opposed to a laptop. A few questions, 1. Do you transfer your images using the celluar function of the iPad to transfer to the cloud or is that more for your Netflix?; 2. You settled on 256Gb, I assume this is enough in conjunction with a separate SSD for backup?; 3. You said you are using your desktop less and less, so when you return home do you do any post trip edits still on the iPad or on the desktop? 4. As i have found when buying high quality monitors for photo editing its important to make sure they maintain their settings, are you aware if there are any issues like this with the iPad Pro? 5. Do you add the Apple Care with the iPad to cover off on any potential accidents with the unit, I recently broke my iPad air in a bag with a wine bottle, despite it having a case, so I will as a matter of course get the insurance. Thanks again for the great review, Andrew

I have been curious about laptop vs iPad Pro for mobile editing. My main question has been if the iPad can handle HDR and Pana merging? Can it transition a photo from Lightroom to Photoshop for additional tweaks? I do a lot of real estate and those are 2 required actions on every house. I've only seen people show basic editing of a single photo in Lightroom.

Neither is available yet from my understanding, but I’m sure it will be available eventually as both app are being updated frequently. I know you can merge photos in Affinity Photo.

Hi Mark. I currently only have an old laptop that I don’t feel is fast enough for LR or PS and I edit in the mobile versions in my IPhone. You know... It's far more efficient to do you importing within the app. You can even select new albums to import into. Once I have selected what images I want to keep I export the RAWs onto my NAS straight out of lightroom. Then I edit and export the jpg's to wherever they need to go.
