New FCC mandated labels for cable, internet providers to start appearing this month

Wouldn’t it be nice if shopping for internet service was easy to read and simplified like an itemized invoice? Even a nutrition label?

Actually the FCC should go after these ISP's who advertise their internet speed as being say 1 gig down when in reality you're getting maybe 500 meg's for example .
@ItzAwsomeWasTaken
@ItzAwsomeWasTaken 2 месяца назад
In fine print they say that speed in Ethernet ( which it is ). It is actually 1 gig down however not on WiFi
@mariusmcleod2487
@mariusmcleod2487 2 месяца назад
@@ItzAwsomeWasTaken Currently, my tower is connected via Ethernet cable. I am being charged for the price of six meg's down, and I am only getting half that. I think it's rather shady to advertise a certain speed only to get half and be charged as though I was getting the advertised speed.
@MoonLiteNite
@MoonLiteNite 2 месяца назад
The problem is not the ISP, it is the people you are talking to, and the computers inbetween. I never had an ISP lie to me about the speeds. If you are seeing 500mbs on your speedtest website, that is the issue, the speed test website. I never had problems using the full bandwidth for AOL, roadrunner, TWC, spectrum and now ATT. Turn on a tor node or p2p torrents and BOOM, will easily fill up that 1gbs that you are paying for. Services like youtube, steam, EA games, facebook, whatever, they all limit how quick you can download from them.

I just identify how much the 'sports fee' is and I short the bill by that exact amount. When they ask why I sent X instead of X I explain that I do not support sports programming, do not watch it, and have no use for it, therefor I will not pay for it. 2 out of 3 providers actually adjusted my bill to cut out that fee.

A high percentage of people in Austria and Germany pay around 18 or 15 Euros for public television. Some of the people don't watch it for various reasons. Yet they need to pay for it. If they don't pay, they may get in trouble. The best thing about it, on the public channels there are still commercials because the money isn't enough.

A nutrition label also usually indicates serving size. Everything is advertised more, faster, better. A lot of folks dont need as much bandwidth as they are swindled into paying for. As a sys admin, both wife and myself working from home, we'd be fine on 100 mb/s. We pay for 300 mb/s as our cheapest option.

You should have at least 2 months to back out of any 2 year contract, with removal of equipment being the responsibility of the service provider at no cost to the consumer. It would make companies think twice about providing poor service because people are locked in for two years.
@darkcougarkat
@darkcougarkat 2 месяца назад
This is a common sense thing that should have been a long time ago. I know the cable and ISP companies like to screw you with these fees, but if you really break it down they would save money because they would have less calls coming into their call center with angry customers and could essentially and probably will staff less people in those call centers. I could be wrong here but it seems to be pretty straightforward

The government needs to end the cable company's monopoly in areas and force them to compete as they did with At&T/MaBell years ago. They should also ban the practice of these companies of reducing services or channels during an agreed contracted plan without a reduced monthly cost as well.
@jimk8520
@jimk8520 2 месяца назад
When someone wants a real raise, they find a new job and go to work for a different company. The same should be done to internet providers. Don’t stay with one beyond the promotional rate to keep the bill low.
@paulbork7647

This is not accurate. I’ve always known what I was paying for, by virtue of the simple act of asking, reviewing bills and talking to the salesman before subscribing. So the idea that the broadband companies were running free until the government “came to our rescue” is just wrong. I remember a Texas Supreme Court case where the plaintiff admitted they simply did not read the contract they signed. The court basically said, “If you can not be bothered to read what you sign, do not expect us to be bothered to help you.”

As the man explained in this video, these ISP’s are often monopolies. THAT is the REAL problem. THAT is why they can charge whatever they want, even for service that is below the quality that they advertise. At one time, there was some momentum in congress to address that, but as always, Big Money finds a way to get the rules written in their favor. We really need term limits in DC more than anything right now.

The advertising scam of 'speeds *up to* . . . ' needs to be prohibited as well. "Not to exceed" would be a more honest phrasing, since the figure indicates that you will *NEVER* do better than that number, but not disclosing that, say, getting 100 kilobits/second on a supposed gigabit connection still meets that "guarantee".
@I_Am_Your_Problem

No it should be an enforceable SLA (service level agreement). To be enforcable means both parties have a benefit in the SLA. Your service is 100Mb per second. Your SLA is plus or minus 10% for any duration. The SLA is only in effect for wired connections.

Every department of Comcast is contracted out to separate companies: Promotions, Installations, Billing, Technical Support, etc. That way when they tell you lies that contradict what one of their other sub-contractors told you, they can just point fingers and avoid responsibility, “I’m sorry sir, I don’t know who told you that, but there is nothing that I can do.
