This normalization update is going to make me save DAYS as I work in broadcasting post production ... thanks dude nice rev as ususal

You got me at "render normalizing". The normalizing of stems is actually very useful for me. I make arrangements for guitar and record them in three or four different keys. They are then used by a website played along to the same accompaniment (that is pitched by an automatic system). I usually just normalized the files after rendering, but with this I can save that step, plus, I can make sure they all will have the same relative volume to the accompaniment.
I can already see there's some confusion regarding the "normalize stems to master target" option in the Render dialog. This does *not* normalize all the stems to the same level; it normalizes them so that their *combined* level hits the specified master target. I.e., it increases their gain but preserves their relative offset. The use case: you render a master mix that is normalized, while also generating stems that *when combined* achieve the same level as the (normalized) master mix. It's exactly what we've always needed. Try it!
@@TheREAPERBlog Can you tell me where the link is to the loudness video with you and Dan Shepherd please? You mentioned it early in this video but I can't find it. Thank you.
Reaper is scary at this point. While I probably won't use the loudness render functions, it's just another way that Reaper thinks of everyone. I love that. Great Vid.
What an awesome update! I've been using the SWS loudness extension to batch normalise music for a radio show, and doing it from the batch converter window will save me so much time!
Hi Jon! Thanks for your update videos every time. Targeting stems to a level could be useful when bouncing something for backing tracks for a Live Performance. That is something I do find myself talking a lot about. How to find a level & processing amount that will be suitable for a live performance when most of the performance is micd but won't sound as well or as loud.
I think this was the first time I kept staring at devs changelog and was like "whoa this gotta be huge update", and then BAM it went live, and I knew I'd be waiting for your perfect video of update coverage, thanks Jon! :D
Just the other day I was wondering how cool it would be to have normalizing on render to specific target levels , especially for game audio with region render matrix. And bamm it's here ! This is going to make life so much easier.
Deepest appreciation to Cockos REAPER, the developers, the community, and The REAPER Blog. My question is where should one ask or suggest for an update? There is a problem when importing audio with timecode. REAPER does not seem to understand timecode greater than 12hrs, and will not locate it to correct location on the timeline. This is a problem for me when importing and syncing audio recorded on external recorders with european RTC.
@@matt_sitas I don't think the REAPER Blog is involved in the development, but only creating tutorials and courses. I think the right place could be the REAPER Bug Reports Forum on reaper.fm.
The master track LUFS-I is weird because usually integrated loudness is sort of a stable level. The way it is on the master track, it behaves more like momentary loudness. When the audio stops, the level meter drops down. I was going to post on the forum about it but was waiting for your video. I feel like the documentation on this could be better.
@Daniel Boyd Ya it's weird. It has a bunch of options but the new ones don't behave like I'd expect. For example, short term loudness is a 3s window, right? Usually, these LUFS meters don't show anything for 3s. When set to that, the master meter shows the value immediately. The lufs-i is called 'LUFS-M (LUFS-I) - whatever that means. Honestly, the documentation could be better.
Wow, I hope this works without me thinking too hard(I'm a bass player) I've really struggled with levels in my final mixes, even though I get the concepts. EDIT: oh well looks like I'm still going to have to think about LUFs, lol. Still an awesome video, thanks!
I seem to be having issues with this version of Reaper when it comes to using my expression pedal on tracks with particular plugins. Major crackling has been introduced somehow. I am not sure if it is a setting that has changed since I updated (maybe reverted back to default or something - unless they have changed something in the backend), but I cannot seem to find it. I have tried the obvious. I am tempted to roll back to v6.29. :(. Which is a shame.
Since upgrading my recent masters seem to be reading a bit hotter on the master levels. I know they were not speaking before. Are these reading a different kind of level now ?
Zo glad with normalizing with rendering!! Specially for broadcasting, too bad it does not have the EBU r128 standard in it like others do as Nuendo, Sequoia etc.
Normalize stems may come handy for song construction kits where if the softer parts if used outside the conatruction dont become too soft. And usually one would rebalance the song stems construction parts. Though i agree it would be hell if this was switched and and if someone exported files for further mixing duties...it could be hell ! :)
Newb question, if I may. I have started recording nature sounds and I thought the recording levels should be between -6-12db. However when I watch this video and in the loudness part, I see you like to keep voices below -12db. Would you mind providing an explanation as to why you prefer below -12db for voice where others are recommending between -6 to 12db? PS. I have enjoyed watching your editing nature sounds video, as well. Thank you.
Hello Jon! Hope you're doing well brother! I just wanted to ask, if I update Reaper, does this mean that it'll do a clean install? Cause I like my setup now (installed plugins, settings, ...). Will it keep the same preferences I have now or things will change and I'll have to fix them from the start? Thanks in advance, D
Love dry run - question - if there is a peak is there an easy way of finding it? I see the red line which is handy but can't work out where the peak is in the track .
I just did a test and the level normalizing comes after the effects chain. Is there any way to change the order to put a limiter after normalizing (to lufs instead of peaks) to catch any potential peaks?
I noticed that Izotope VST3 plugins work fine under Rosetta with the Intel version of Reaper. But they hang and don't work in the ARM version of Reaper in the VST3 bridge under Rosetta. This is most likely a bug.
man i'm a huge fan of reaper daw ...but import aaf and omf files native in reaper may be a final frontier to ost professionals , good vibes from Brazil .
@@TheREAPERBlog I will continue to support the Cockos Reaper team regardless of my needs, which I have always found ways to solve. But I insist, within the DAW market, it would be a big step to have this feature included in Reaper.
Jon I don't usually Normalize the render and using a luffs meter I keep things between -23>-18 and they are never loud enough when rendered How do you actually know what level is a good render?
well people master up to like -10, -9 LUFS for a very loud master. If you want loud, you can certainly do that, but as long as the mix sounds good to you that's all that matters; the loudness wars are coming to an end
May we have a discussion about reaper being ported to IOS? I notice there’s an arm architecture version for raspberry Pi …. Do you have any influence on development? Seriously I’d buy a reaper app for iPad regardless of its price. I miss it so much 💕
What’s your recommended pathway to request this (iOS availability) feature with the dev’s? Is there a secret hack to make it happen? Surely the iPad Pro is fully capable - it seems to wipe the floor in capability Reaper is the king of DAWs… and it’s so lightweight…. It could bust into the IOS market and rule the scene What do you know? 😉 Let’s encourage this to happen!! …. How? 🙏
I think it probably is possible to do, but very unlikely to happen. There are only two people working on REAPER. Surely there are good iPad daws already.
Quick unrelated question: Do Waves v9 plugins work in Reaper 6? I'm stuck with Reaper 5.99999 because I'm a little bitch who don't want to gamble installing and uninstalling Reaper.
