The Warden is definitely going in the collection at some point with such an awesome model and fun ability. With the mini of the month being a cryptguard it is tempting to grab them both and have them under the delusion that the Warden, by the name of Aladdin, wants to show his Princess the world. In their eyes they sing and fly on a magic carpet with their magic lamp. In reality everyone else there has to witness the grotesque sight of horrid gurgling and drooling as they course through the air stealing the treasure.

I love the concept. It’s perfect! The warden is such an interesting piece. His stats are undercooked for sure but that ability is so good in so many scenarios you can ignore him. Be interesting to see if people run him, and how well he plays

Great stuff! Cant wait to bash you with a Varg😂 Couple of interesting notes - The cardinal ability as is can apply in the next round if the model hs already activated which is super good Varghulf ability is actually not a pseudo fly (I made the same mistake the first time I read it), it's go-go-gadget arms like monsters have to ignore vertical distance for *attacks* Stoked to see these guys get played and see everyone getting offered a boning 😜

I dropped a sneaky visual aid mentioning the swanky cardinal plays…but the Varg thing…damn. That’s some snaz. Still not a fan of it. Just seems painfully overcosted for what it brings to the table

You can use the Beastflayers Ghoul trackers for the same stats as the Ghouls, but without the minion runemark, or point cost bump. I just had my first game, and the Quad buff (Decree of Chivalry) can really help put out some damage if hes near the middle of the board, if you are lucky enough to have a quad.

The gorewarden - you have to have someone else to move, as written - its not "you can pick another fighter". So its a blessing and a curse and i think does restrict it's utility quite a lot - the treasure grab teleport for example only works if you have a model already at the treasure

That’s true thanks for pointing it out! That being said, with 10” of movement you can still easily fly to an objective, nab it, move back slightly (albeit without fly) and then still have a second movement (slightly reduced) to skedaddle away and then either not teleport because you’re far enough away, or teleport because it’s funny. Alternatively start next to your teleport target, teleport to the treasure, then move away with a double move. Lots of weird ways to pull it off. You could also just do most of this with my beloved, the Morbeg Knight, since he’s just as fast and has access to a bonus move. 30ish” (reduced after nabbing) is a wild amount of movement on a single treasure mission. So many options to dominate it.

I'm also way less down on the varghulf than you (although I would probably ultimately consider a strength blessed archregent first for the same offense on the cheap). Move-> Attack the new one can roll 5 dice on a double Vs the old one doing 6 on a triple Attack/attack the new one can do 10 dice on a double Vs the old one doing 9 on a triple. It's way less dice hungry to do similar things. That was the thing with old FEC - when they weren't spending dice they weren't doing much. This gives them a piece that can be more a standalone model allowing you to spend dice on the cool abilities. The loss of fly - 💯 that's a downer. But I don't think it's in the completely unplayable camp.

@@wargamesontoast yeah I think I've come to the conclusion that the bat rider is the one you want in the take all comers list. It's super mobile still, the T5 means it can play the disengage damage reaction game which the gorewarden just can't, and the bonus disengage/move combo will make it able to start it's turn carrying treasure in combat and end it still carrying treasure but 23" away (drop treasure, bonus disengage+move recollecting it, move)

Oh, and you'll use the bat riders offensive profile, whereas it's pretty risky to do the same on the gorewarden given it's fragility

Maybe I am being a bit of a Debbie downer on the Varg. IIRC you can get a very similar output on a cheaper and faster Infernal(?) as well. I think my issue with the laddie is that he’s gotten more expensive, Lost some versatility, and then gained more competition in his camp with the dawn of Cabbage Knights, existence of M10 fliers with similar profiles, etc. He does offer one of the higher raw damage outputs…but I’m a bitter man. I’m looking forward to giving them a proper whirl and doing a full ‘How To Play’. I wasn’t sure on this ‘first impression’ format, but it was to make even if my initial impressions might end up being wrong hahaha

Ghouls were already expensive, and you're telling me they now cost MORE? What is GW thinking? They're one of the worst chaff units in the game and consistently cost more than so many other things. Skeletons are dirt cheap and can be resurrected for a double, how have they not costed THAT?

Ghouls have had a bump probably because of they new double that let’s them chain activate. It will likely cut your warband by a model or remove a blessing from your list, which sucks. Comparing anything to Skeletons is pointless though because skeletons are ludicrous value. I suspect of GW get around to rebalancing points, skeletons will be getting slammed
