Always a good job. Thorough, well-presented, well-considered. Agreed with test tracks for evaluation. And, the gear that's used, too. Different gear used with different headphones can make a significant difference in the way a headphone sounds. Synergy. I just watched a speaker review by a very experienced audio reviewer who specified all the gear he used with the speakers for the review, and talked about how the different gear yielded a different net sonic result. I'm working through this very kind of thing right now (as I have now for decades mucking about with this audio hobby) with a matrix of DACs, amps, sources, and headphones. They can all sound different - sometimes very different - in different combinations, and some combos I prefer more than others. I also appreciate the reviews you've done where you go beyond the bass/midrange/treble/soundstage review sequence format. The completeness and nuance of a product can be captured within this format, but more often the review ends up simpler and more formulaic.

Yes, recordings absolutely matter more than what people may think. I kind of found out the hard way, as I love listening to 80s pop and EDM, most of which is recorded horribly with bright treble and crunchy compression. Which is why I always used the 650 (and more recently the 58X) for that genre with it's laid back and smooth mids and treble. That stuff just sounds straight up bad on the Elex and Sundara, two relatively revealing headphones, which sound amazing on well recorded stuff of course. Also as a side note, those cables look a LOT like the Elex cables, same color and everything except for the connectors of course.

I wonder if Focal's headphones still have driver excursion issues. I owned 2 pairs of Elex a few years ago & had to return both because of it. Read stories about the Elear, Clear, as well as the Utopias having the same problem though much less prevalent the higher up the rank you go. I don't think they've ever addressed it, which is sad because their sound signature is my favorite.

I've never once heard it. I think you have to listen at some crazy high volumes to make it happen and I just don't listen that loud.

@@TheHEADPHONEShow Unfortunately not true. In both pairs of my Elex regardless of db they'd crackle on an acapella portion of a certain song (I bought a meter to test.) Didn't matter if it was 10db or 100. I met a guy at AXPONA a few years ago who said his Utopias didn't do it at first but after a while they started crackling & got consistently worse. Someone on Head-Fi had the exact same situation as him. I'm too spooked to buy something from then again :(
@rippinfreestyle
@rippinfreestyle 4 года назад
There’s a pretty big difference between the built in DB limits that Focal has built in and headphones that are actually clipping. If your headphones are clipping at 10db then they are defective and would be fixed / replaces under warranty. You have to get the volume up to deafening levels in order for the DB limits that Focal has put in to be reached. People often confuse actual driver clipping and think it’s intended because of that confusing Focal post that addresses it on Head-Fi
@devinwilliams4860
@devinwilliams4860 4 года назад
@@rippinfreestyle Obviously they're defective, and that defect is why I'm apprehensive on pulling the trigger in the first place. You know how fun it is to order a pair, find out they're broken, wait a week for a new pair, find out they're broken too, then have to ship both back? I'm not "confusing" anything. It's a bad time.

What i also always see is people blaming recodings for the fault of a headphon.e For example with the DT 1990, people always say that you have to listen to well recorded music since the headphone is so "revealing" meanwhile its just the headphones and the 8.5k peak screaming at you.

Clear Pro is the same as the Clear, just different color scheme and accessories. Both are what most people would consider 'neutral'.

The fact that a fatiguing recording sounds fatiguing on a headphone doesn't mean that the headphone is not to blame. There are also degrees of the problem. If a recording is sibilant but listenable, and it sounds absolutely unlistenable on a headphone, then the headphone is adding to the problem. IME the Utopia is revealing, sure, but it also has its own treble peaks that make sibilance worse. However, they're not as massive as internet hysteria would have you believe and overall the Utopia is pretty well balanced. But a bit of EQ can make it better still.

Let's strike a balance about what metal571 once said about his music library/catalog which is something along the lines of - they are awfully recorded. Like him, I like a lot of metal and many of those recordings are recorded in a garbage manner. So, if someone likes those kind of music instead of hifi Chesky Records stuff (which might be 10% of my library but for the other 90% I prefer the HD600 or LCD 2), does it really justify getting awesome revealing headphones? Just thinking out loud. .
@TheHEADPHONEShow
@TheHEADPHONEShow 4 года назад
Yeah this is the important question. I think there's probably a decent middle ground, and that's also probably why these days the ideal preference for high end headphones among many enthusiasts tends to be "warm yet detailed" (kind of like ZMF headphones). This makes the headphones interesting from an audiophile perspective, but also non-fatiguing and appropriate for the music we may actually want to listen to, not merely the optimally recorded tracks.

Would you say that it makes more sense to purchase a headphone based on its technical ability rather than what it sounds like with your favorite music genres? Then, being that we're enthusiasts, use EQ to tweak the sound based on the recording/genre? Edited because the first iteration was obnoxiously long. :)
@TheHEADPHONEShow
@TheHEADPHONEShow 4 года назад
I can understand why people don't want to EQ, and in a way... the whole headphone hobby becomes a lot more interesting if you don't do it. But that's really only for people who own or are willing to own multiple headphones. For most people, I think a conservative EQ is a good idea. With that said, I'm not sure I'd EQ for specific genres. Not that there's any reason not to, I just find it a bit annoying to do, since I listen to such a wide range of different music. I think I just end up EQing stuff to what I consider 'neutral', and then just admitting that certain recordings are just unpleasant haha.

Hey Andrew, another great video. Just as a note. Just like you I find that most reviews evaluate sound stage and imaging all wrong. In order to accurately evaluate sound stage and imaging in my mind you have to use a binaural recording and have a picture of both the space, and how the instruments are arranged in that space to evaluate whether or not your headphone represents all of that accurately. Here is the best way ive found to meet all those criteria. David Chesky's Joy and Sorrow. Not only is it one of the finest audiophile recordings ive ever heard, there is a youtube video on how it was made which shows the church that it was recorded in as well as the general placement of instruments in that room. So if you want to judge headphone sound stage reproduction accuracy, which I think we all do, consider using that track.
@TheCangle
@TheCangle 4 года назад
The music you choose definitely has an impact on how your headphones sound. I have the LCD-4z and some music just doesn't sound right or I'll start to pick up on issues with the recording that I wouldn't notice with other headphones. I've only recently heard Letters by Yosi Horikawa and that's a great sounding track to test headphones with.

I wonder why more manufacturers are not using beryllium drivers. It think beryllium cost only like around 100$ per kilogram. And speed of sound in beryllium is 2.5 times that of aluminium and the diaphragm breakup occur at much higher frequency than aluminium or any other metal. The main difference between utopia and clear is the use of berrylium instead of aluminium driver. Someone could make a beryllium driver headphone at 200$ and it could sound better than some planars.
@rochili777
@rochili777 4 года назад
You don't need Beryllium to make them sound good and they cost a lot more relative to other normal methods, not to mention Beryllium is hazardous when mishandled. Also, planars are just "film" that are "cheap" if you only talk about production. Example, HE4XX, M1060, T50RP, PM3. It's not all about the drivers, if not the RBH HP2 is just a $100 Beryllium headphone you ever need.
@Tesseract9630
@Tesseract9630 4 года назад
They say in their website of hp2 that ' The HP-2 utilizes our 45mm diameter driver diaphragm that incorporates a beryllium surface that has been applied using a technique called, “thermal physical vapor deposition.” I think they are using a berrylium coating instead of actual driver made of beryllium. So if that is the case ,then it wouldn't reach the performance of using pure berrylium driver. Sure it is going to cost more to make a pure berrylium driver as opposed to coating a driver with beryllium(because beryllium is very brittle and is hard to make into thin sheets). But in any case ,a well designed pure berrylium driver is going to sound spectacular. I don't think that should cost 3000$ like utopias. The reason I compared to planars was only because planars usually outperforms dynamic driver hp in same price range.

Functionally? Yes. Sound-wise... potentially, depending on the headphones. But realistically they're both solid state amps that don't color the sound in any meaningful way. If you have inefficient planars or something like the HEDD audio HEDDphone, the IHA-6 with the balanced output all the way. For dynamic driver headphones, or use of some of the many features, the Phonitor X is probably better. I can't see myself using the single ended outputs of the IHA-6 because I don't have an HD800, and if I did I'd rather use it from a tube amp anyway.
