A great video. Please could you add a link to www.staybehinds.com? The U.K. wide research group on Aux Units.

Me and a mate used to play in one of these in the 1960's. It was situated on the edge of a wooded hillside about four miles inland from the north Norfolk coast near to the place where the invasion wold have taken place had it happened. There was a lot of live ammunition scattered around in the woods, 303 rifle ammunition and some 38 revolver and a lot of hand grenades rusted together in lumps. There were also a good many coils of barbed wire and pigtail stakes. some of these had been used by the farmer for his fencing.

A lot of the members of auxiliary units took locations to the grave. They took the official secrets act very seriously. Many weapons and explosives caches are still out there in small bunkers such as this.

I am slowly searching my local area for a bunker like this, by map grid square by grid square. Where I live I think would have been of strategic importance having 4 linked, back to back reservoirs built in the 1800's serving the drinking water for Manchester. I have already found a well hidden (but maybe not at the time of building) as it now has 50- 70 years of foliage, trees, etc growing around it) possibly Cold War bunker or even WW2 for soldiers patrolling the reservoirs, that is now well covered in foliage and undergrowth, I cleared some of the undergrowth to reveal concrete and traced the outline of the outer diameter of the bunker, by removing soil, foliage, etc to reveal a concrete box shape, but the entrance way above ground (some sort of brick built anti blast shelter) as been almost demolished and the remaining ground level part concreted over, I presume the bunker underneath is flooded as the aluminium chimney/ air vent that still sticks partly up by around 6 inches on the roof is full of water right to the top. There are also other strange concrete blocks around both side of the reservoirs, now in the under growth, I have been told by an old man who has lived here all his life that steel cables ran across from the blocks either side to prevent low flying German aircraft trying to breach the dams, much like the 1942 Dambusters raid on the German dams. I have no reason to disbelieve him, as the blocks are fairly substantial and do have the similar sort of holes (Anchor points) and set up for cables, like on a suspension bridge, just running horizontal, instead of vertical.

As a child,40 odd years ago (and they have been odd!!) I used to play in one of these hidden home guard hidy holes,obviously not knowing at the time,until I became involved with historic re enactment the historical significance of it. The last time I visited it,the long tunnel had caved in,but the shaft was still intact. I remember also bunk bed frames in there. It was in woods in the middle of nowhere,I wish I knew where it was now,but guess time has taken its toll. Great vid folks,keep them coming.

Hi IKS ' Some extra history to this video If you google map search Radnor Arms pub in Coleshill (oxfordshire) then just the other side of the road south there is a National trust marker That is the training camp for the people you talk about. in the video. They were chosen and then required to turn up at Highworth post office (a town close it Coleshill) and report to the post mistress an army truck would pick them up and drive them the to Coleshill, they drove them on a route that disoriantate them (spell check not working) but basically Highworth to Coleshill is about 3 miles on one road but the people were taken all over Oxfordshire to get there, they was then trained up in the bunker war fair you describe. Look up first Highworth post office and the Coleshill (national trust)......

I typed all that and then clicked Tom Sykes link, Doh ! Still as a folk born in Kent , lived just up the road from Coleshill and now living in Devon with my nearest ROC at Horns Cross I would just like to say Thanks for your videos, a real lockdown history watch and kept my brain working while at home.

Another great video. It's always interesting to visit and explore the remnants of the war periods. Glad to see this one was in such good condition, sadly many war-related locations are subject to vandalism and disrespect. Always great to see a jem like this!

I'm guessing many of the bunkers were constructed hastily and probably by teams that weren't from the are so the locations couldn't be easily revealed. I wonder if this had been restored a bit. Maybe in hopes for a museum, but funding fell through.

Generally they got Engineers from the north and gave a cover story of digging a different style of defence works. It was all well concealed. The door and wall these guys came to was a blast wall designed to prevent a grenade from blowing you up if the disguised trap door was found.

Great find, love the History at the start which brings home that these people who volunteered faced certain death as the Germans would have classed them as Commandos and we all know what they did to them.😪

Toby Scott-Ison It’s in Chatham on a military base I work on. Basically it’s now a restricted area as it’s now part of the military site as a whole but originally it was on an public access road. It’s literally about 400 yards from HMS Wildfire tunnels that are documented on RU-vid already. The block house and exhaust fan stack are easily seen as well as the intake fan concrete block with louvers. The block house is now bricked up where the double doors are but a few years ago the air bricks were replaced and I could see with a torch the stairs leading down to a landing then another set leading off to the left onto the dark. I have been told by the site permanent staff that the shelter/opps rooms are untouched with power still down there if switched on. The fans and lights are still in working order. I have access to the tunnels having asked and can arrange for a site visit. Though the block house is bricked up but the rear entrance is still accessible and locked. Tried to contact Iks but had no response, I’m not a youtuber so if I was to go in there i would not film, it’s just for my own interest. That said I would happily organise a site visit for a RU-vid documentary channel that documents this kind of stuff.

Why did the tunnel leading to it look more modern than the shelter?
@Tobyscott2002

John Dufton because it’s made of concrete and hasn’t deteriorated like the rest of it.

The Germans had auxilliary units called the warewolves. It proved less than effective as a war tactic.

Some of the wiring is post ww2 and the bunker seems very big for an aux force bunker. This looks more like a command post as there are old telephone wires in the room you thought had a genny in it
