I'm going to play this game, and this is such a good way to preview the game and understand the rules first. Thanks for the effort. 1:06:06 I'm not sure whether the good you sold at 1:05:34 counts as a consumption. Usually in RftG, trade and consume are 2 different things, and looking at the tile of Trade/Consume, it says "sell" instead of "consume". I'm also looking forward to an answer to this.

This is a great catch, thanks for pointing it out Garret! You are correct, they sold one cube and only consumed 2 so they should have taken 1 less VP from the Prosperous Economy development. I've added a note about this to the Klingon subtitles.

Jon, another excellent playthrough. I think that's 3 playthroughs in a row that I've watched of yours where you didn't win (darn ghost players). ;-) While I agree with the comments below about RftG vs. NF, I do feel that I could get this one to the table more often as the iconography is better (or better explained) than RftG (a major complaint from my gaming group).

Yeah, it's quite the current losing streak! I agree about this one being more accessible, I love it when a game has iconography for easy glancing, but also explanation text on the same item if you need details.

If I hadn't purchased Roll for the Galaxy in 2018, I could totally see where I would have bought this game. I agree with the other posters, though, that there doesn't seem to be enough differentiation between each of the different flavors of RftG/NF to make me want to have more than one flavor. Really appreciate the run through!

I suppose the biggest differentiator is the non-simultantaneous action selection which brings it more in line with San Juan and Puerto Rico. I personally prefer this to the way RtfG does it, but I can see how that's not going to be the same for everyone. Glad you enjoyed the playthrough :)

This game is so, so good. Much better than Race, probably better than Roll (I'll need to play it more to make that call). Having all of the possible developments visible from the jump is just fantastic.

Great playthrough as usual, thanks Jon! As others have said, it looks far too similar to Race and Roll to be a worthwhile purchase for me. Although I'm sure I'd love it! I find it fascinating that it's gone full circle back to something very like Puerto Rico (having started as the card game development of that game) Also, I think at 1:05:10 yellow missed a credit for diversified economy?

Wow, it even seems to have the tension between produce-consume and big military strategies that Race has! Improved logistics and military has always been a killer combo that is difficult to beat. You have to be able to start hammering out the production-consumption cycles for big VP. Thinking about it, I'm almost impressed the difference was only 8vp!

@@lynette4119 Agreed, though the Green player really should have had 2 more points since on their last turn they could have consumed $3 for it but decided not to because they were going to develop (before realizing they should absolutely end the game instead). Not every game will have Improved Logistics though, and the backside option just gives perks for settling instead of letting you settle twice.

@@JonGetsGames Ah, ok. Thanks for the info - I couldn't remember where Improved Logistics was in the setup. The fact that this seems to have so many of the same 'rhythms' and strategy interactions as Race and Puerto Rico is one of the things that really comes through in the video for me. Watching a game played for the first time and being able to immediately see 'green is doing this, so the others should be thinking about x and y' is kinda strange!

At 28:00 you skipped a bonus for Diversified Economy. Not sure if that would have been 1 or 2 bonus though, does it have to be produced that turn?

Good catch! Yes it has to be produced that turn, so Green should have made +1 credit. I've added a note about this to the Klingon subtitles.

My problem with this game is not that it is a bad game. It's basically Race for the Galaxy, and that's a good game. The problem is... it's basically Race for the Galaxy. It's certainly not a *better* game than RftG. But it is a more expensive, less portable, and less elegant game. So why would I get it? Puerto Rico at least has the excuse of coming out before San Juan. Still, great video as always

Not to mention that it still suffers from all thee problems Race has, including the ease of dominating military. It looks like that's even easier with this version too given the selection process of developments and settles, as opposed to in RftG where you might start with the military homeworld and a hand with no military in it and have to go hunting

We also felt that military was too easy, but we've only played twice and our strategies were a little too similar to let them do what they wanted. In my experience, military doesn't dominate race,.

It's not basically rftg. It's a decent blend of PR and rftg. It's not better than either. However, it plays faster, is prettier, and does things in a more interesting (but not better) way than PR, and adds some cool struff to Race. I'd still rather play either of them than NF, but it certainly has a place for some people and I respect that. There's one guy in my group who hates PR, and another that can't stand Race, but both enjoyed this enough to play again. It'll never be a favorite, but it's definitely okay.

I can see where you are coming from here. This playthrough was my only play currently so I'm curious to see where I land with this one once I play it with others. I used to really enjoy Puerto Rico, and after a few plays of Race I never found myself interested in going back to it. This one may see more play due to it's hybrid nature between the two, though I suspect I will find myself ultimately wishing it was slightly deeper and longer.

I like the look of the game play but in the UK at the moment your e going to have to pay at least £60 for it. That's not good value for money. There are also aspects of the game (the crazy plastic resource cubes) that are overproduced for no good reason. Oversized, over complicated design which just adds to the price with little to know benefit to cosmetics.
