Hannah, Answer a couple questions for me would you? I think it would help us recommend games you enjoy. 1. The idea of repeating a game after I've beaten it and looking for new things/efficiencies appeals to me. (y/n) 2. I prefer games that represent a significant investment of time (50+ hours gameplay) versus games that can be finished in one or two play sessions. 3. I want to be taken on a journey, meet interesting characters and see them interact. 4. I want time spent in game to be a feast for my senses, visually and aurally. I am disinterested in simple graphics and soundtracks. 5. I want to have a clear directive when playing a game. Figuring out my own direction just leaves me lost and confused. If you answer these questions, I think your community will be able to more easily suggest games you will get a kick out of, not just ones we want to see you play/struggle with.

I think "Completion" in this context means Completing EVERYTHING available to do in the game, most of the times, way more than just completing the game "story" or "run" itself, things like collecting all the hidden or not so hidden things in a game, talking to everybody, getting all the types of guns, crafting all the tools, things in that regard

i think its hard to guage your motivation when playing games this early on. i think a lot of the excitment you might get from completing the game is from how new they are to you and how it can be a challenging task because of your current skill level. the completionist part was definetly more refering to people who want to hunt every achievment, not just completing the game. once the novelty of finishing games wears off, i think itll be a lot easier to measure your motivations.

Loved your reaction! :) A couple of things 🤓👆 - It's JRPG, not GRPG (J from Japanese) - they usually have a more anime-style aesthetic and a few other differences from other RPGs. - If you want to play one of the Zelda games, considering what you said in this video, Hyrule Warriors or Breath of the Wild are better suggestions for you than a more classical and story-intensive one, like, say, Skyward Sword. That is, unless you want to try to "improve your openness" and try something new, to see if you can enjoy a game with more story/exploration. Although Zelda has a lot of lore, usually it doesn't make heavy use of cutscenes, like some other story-focused games (which kinda feel like you're watching a movie); story is told more in terms of interactions, so you can enjoy as much or as little story as you want. Same with exploration - there's achievements, but they're not required for you to beat the game. In this case, I'd recommend Majora's Mask for a 3D Zelda, and A Link Between Worlds (3DS) or Link's Awakening (Switch) for a 2D Zelda.

There are plenty of react channels that do game trailers or cinematics (nothing wrong with those either to be clear), but not a lot that do these short form video essay type videos. I enjoy it. Hope you keep these up :)

I think for me the motivation is defiantly exploration and getting to know a knew place while not actually interacting with people, and the creativeness of making a story through my decisions, and how I play the game.

Tilted; a turn of phrase back from the days of Pinball, where players would tilt the machine to try to influence the ball. But the cabinet designers didn't like that, so they included a fail-safe into the machine to make it stop working when the Pinball Machine was tilted. So, getting tilted has become slang for 'getting so frustrated your brain stops working'. Just like a pinball machine. Games such as League of Legends are infamous for causing player tilt.

Your personality is like if kittens and puppies could talk and try and be friends with things... so a peaceful game like Stardew Valley or something would have been ideal... but noooo instead you went for The Menace Of The Murderous Mushroom-Men.

The type of game you enjoy can vary a LOT. I like being big fish in little pond, meaning I am playing well for the type of game and level of difficulty. I could push and play on higher difficulties but I enjoy being decent performer in a group of less experienced players. I should like to build and develop my skills, but I am kinda happy just doing well in a lower difficulty compared to doing meh or badly (and keep training and practicing) in tougher content. For example I started to play Fallout 4 after having played the other games. I have terrible aim so my only real way to win was to do a re-play and find a mod that made me super powerful. I enjoyed the story, exploring and looking around. Heck after a while I basically turned the game into a bad version of Sims when I spend most of my time developing my Settlements, building communities and plan how to efficiently grow crops, get water, build homes and comfy beds, etc. Last I checked I had probably 700-800hr played in Fallout 4 and at least half of that is just me planning and building, reloading when I don't like how something turned out and back to the drawing board. I download skins and mods to make sure guards are properly armored, that my Medic has its own Medic-themed Power Armor, etc. I don't think I have even finished that game because I cannot decide which faction to side with so I stop the story before I need to make that decision.

I'm more of a Explorer/Achiever because i like to explore every nook and cranny of the world map and finding every single collectible and side quest before i go for the story 😂

The problem for me is that because I play such a wide variety of games, I have a lot of different factors I like.

I get the idea that she would enjoy the game Hades. Also, tilted is slang for someone getting agitated in a way that makes them play worse. Trash talk in competitive games can be said to try to cause your opponent to get tilted. Or even just playing in a frustrating unproductive manner intended to throw another off their game.

this might be too late for you to see, but just in case I'll throw this here. Considering you enjoy having clear goals and crave violence and destruction in your games, what about the borderlands Series? Borderlands 2 is a game that clearly tells you where to go next and challenging sections can always be made easier by completing side quests first then returning. It's a game where both the comedy and the violence become so absurd it's hard to find another series like it.(I personally think the second game is the best balance between enough features to be fun but not so many that it gets overwhelming) Borderlands is a series of shooter rpgs that focus on both leveling up your character and looting enemies to get improved weapons and gear to progress through the story. It has a roster of brilliantly written/voiced characters that you either straight up love or love to hate. Definitely one of my top of all time games, and if you fall in love with it, It's got a lot of ways to keep playing after you beat the main story the first time.(about 45ish hours if you focus, but hundreds of hours if you add some dlc and NG+ )

If your biggest motivation is finishing and you like simulated violence and story then games like Halo, Half Life and other story-driven, linear shooters and action games might be a good fit for you. Or at least worth looking at. Also you might like first person since its much easier to look where you're going/ go where you're looking, lol...

I think the easiest way to figure out what you like is the same way we all learned back in the day: demo discs! Discs are no longer required obviously, but you can grab a bunch of short demos from the PS store and try out what you like.

You wanted game recommendations: Based on your Achiever self assesment: - Uncharted, Tomb Raider games, Guardans of the Galaxy - relatively same structure as Last of Us giving you a decent relatively not open world you can achieve towards - Call of Duty story modes, Wolfenstein - same, just more like doom - ARPG games (Diablo, Patch of Exile, Destiny, etc) are good for achievers since you level, get new gear, etc means you can have lots of small achiements in your head, can set short term goals. Something totally different: - Just to decide of you like them, since they are technically also Achivement, but more the Mastery/Strategy side of Achiements: Marvels Midnigh Suns- newest game from the XCOM devs, turn based superhero story, pretty fun!

Watching this channel is like trying to talk about video games to my dad. And my dad is literally the smartest, most cultured man I know, but he _cannot_ wrap his head around even video game concepts that I would think would translate easier from his prefered media of cinema. But after so many years I'm forced to the conclusion that some brains are just _not_ designed to click with video games, and never will. Like teaching an English speaker how to speak Chinese by teaching them in Norwegian. I find the whole thing fascinating, and this channel satisfies this curiosity of mine while simultaneously sparing my father from having to be probed by me to quench sais curiosity. Brilliant little social experiment, this channel is.

A point he didn’t really make is that most games are trying to provide many experiences to as many people as possible. Like Minecraft, it’s a chill Lego sandbox with an unlimited map to explore, but at the same time it’s got a super competitive speedrun community. God of War (and many others) has multiple difficulty settings so you can go easy and basically watch it like a movie, or you can crank it up all the way and skip all the cutscenes just to get to the fights if you want. If you like the quick reactionary gameplay of DOOM or GoW, you’d probably like games that put more emphasis on that. Fighting games are probably the purest representation, but also Bayonetta, DMC, Metal Gear Rising, basically any shooter, and even Monster Hunter or Elden Ring. If you like the feeling of accomplishment of overcoming difficult challenges, but not necessarily having to master the controls, turn-based tactics or rpg’s might be more your speed. All of these are typically pretty linear experiences.

Zelda would absolutely feed your need to complete things. Pretty much any Zelda game, but Breath of the Wild in particular is a wonderfully satisfying game to 'collect all' of. It also has a self-adjusting difficulty curve.

I still think Red Dead would be a nice fit for you, it has a nice balance between storytelling and gameplay, like a playing session can go to a serious emotional mission to a salon altercation because of too much drinking.

I see a lot of things I can agree with and a few things where I'm like "but what if I'm all of those things or a mix that doesn't fit anything?". I'm also sometimes more A+B and sometimes more A+C or just D (as in destruction). I love a good story, but great mechanics and options are so much more fulfilling. Crap story/fun gameplay usually means a fun gaming experience, whereas crap gameplay/great story means I'll get bored, uninstall it after a few hours and just watch the story on RU-vid. I don't dislike social interactions, but I don't want other people to make/break my fun, so I only play singleplayer games and mostly RPG's (like The Witcher and Mass Effect) and FPS games (over-the-top ones like Serious Sam and Shadow Warrior). I also really like games that blend FPS and third-person shooters (like the Jedi Knight series) or that are immersive sims (Deus Ex) or share elements from that genre, mostly giving you more than one option to get past an obstacle/complete a quest (e.g. Knights of the Old Republic). Most of my examples are old, because I have a large backlog and only rarely find a new game that I like enough to mention as an example when talking about my gaming preferences.

I don't know if you think you're ready for open world games, but I know a few that you may like. All of these games are singleplayer and heavily driven by story and characters. Open world games are really the best way to become immersed within a game because you have the freedom to go anywhere and do anything, making for a much more personalised experience and a deeper connection with the world because you're really a part of it. One thing I do want to mention: These games are looooong, and feature a huge amount of secondary/additional content and ignoring it will mean that you won't be as strong as you could be and you will miss out on parts of the game, so barreling through the story and being done with it is not recommended. Ghost Of Tsushima is an instant PlayStation classic, it's got a great story, but the main focus of the game is combat and it is fairly hard if you're not great at the technical aspects of gaming. It does feature stealth kills, arrows to the head, and explosions, though, and we all know you like those. The Witcher 3 is one of my favourite video games of all time. The controls are a little wonky and the combat(again) may be a little hard, but no game has ever made me feel more invested in the story and world than that one. There is also a great emphasis on player choice that affects the story, so you can really make it feel like your own story. I know you like Supernatural and witcher contracts really fill that fantasy if being a moster hunter detective, piecing evidence together to figure out what the monster is, preparing for a fight and going to take it down. Not as much brother melodrama though (but there is some if you do the side quests with Lambert and Eskel(Who is alive btw, his death is a netflix thing only)). Also sex. There is sex. Nothing more risqué than titties, but you do get to choose between Triss and Yennefer. I'm Team Yennefer. Red Dead Redemption 2 is a damn story masterpiece. It's probably the one that you can get away with ignoring side content the most, because most of it isn't super fun, like the fishing and treasure hunting, but the story driven side missions are all really good. My final recommendation would be Hogwarts: Legacy. I know there is controversy around the game because JK Rowling, but her influence really isn't felt much and it's the most immersive Hogwarts experience there is. It also happens to be very noob friendly, having an easy to pick up combat system that is nonetheless very deep on higher difficulties and sporting a lot of accessibility features, like an audio visualiser so the hearing impaired/deaf can determine where sounds come from in-game, and even an arachnophobia mode, which replaces the (numerous) spider enemies with other types of baddies. If you want something more linear like the Last Of Us games, try the Uncharted and Tomb Raider series. They don't have much side content, and the combat is not super technically challenging on the lower difficulties.

I’m definitely mostly in the fantasy/story/design circle but I also enjoy strategy games quite a bit. On the other hand, I’ve tried getting into Minecraft several times and I just couldn’t do it. Also, “tilted” is a gamer term for what happens when you get so frustrated with a game it adversely effects your skill. Love the Sunnydale High shirt.

23:43 "Tilted" is a really old term that if i recall correctly began with pinball. When you suck at the game and it makes you pissed so you hit the table and the machine says you tilted it and takes one of your pinballs away. It's kinda a catch-all for getting so mad for screwing up, you start screwing up even more.

As a 44 year-old man, I love watching this sort of stuff and continually learning about myself. I'm definitely in the mastery-achievement and immersion-creativity clusters. Btw, one of the last images in the video there with the giant blue lady/statue (depends what you read into it) is from the game Gris, which goes through the five stages of grief and made me cry for a very, very long time.

Destruction is probably far from Challenge, because Destroying things is usually easy.

Most games that give you the ability to cause mass destruction aren't that hard compared to other games that limit your skill set. So it makes sense challenge is far away from destruction. It isn't all inclusive obviously, many games are getting better graphics and sound design along with more demanding gameplay, but it's hard to allow a player to blow through an obstacle and still make it challenging. Maybe the set up is challenging, but the destruction itself isn't all that hard to appreciate.

Although a lot of us really love huge universes and expansive games if your super "I just want to beat the game" I am not sure you would enjoy playing a lot of those large very long games as amazing as they are or maybe just make sure you mix it up with lots of short fast fun games Maybe get 3 lists going, games under 10 hours, games around 25 to 35 hours, and games over 50 hours and play some shorter games in-between longer stuff to get those I finished the game feelings while still letting yourself enjoy some of the larger more drawn out games. I tried to have a lot of variety in types of games. Stealth action games are great. Any game with stealth mechanics, really.

Seeing you laugh at the explosion... have you played Fallout yet? You can put a hundred grenades in someone's pocket.

Someone make this woman play Dark Souls if she likes Challenges and the sense of accomplishment of beating the game so hard ;).

I recommend Ori and The Blind Forest. It's exciting, beautiful, moving and intense.

Still think you should try the Sly Copper games, very easy, very fun, and 'complete the mission' based.

I've found that there's actually a lot of things that appeal to me in theory, but in practice only a select few of those things actually manage to keep me entertained. Like, i wish i could enjoy open world games as much as others do but i simply can't. The idea of it still really appeals to me but my brain just doesn't agree with me i guess? 😆

I definitely found more wonder in games when i was younger. after getting older i become overly analytical of the design, mechanics, pacing, etc. Probably brought on by over familiarization of certain game tropes that its no longer exciting, so it really really has to all click together for anything to resonate. Recently the 2 games that made me feel something as wonderous as when i was younger was Subnautica. the forest, and Darkwood.

Very interesting! Im finding that I am definitely a bit of a completionist and dont care at all really about being competitive. Its weird because I really enjoy cod which is known for being competitive but its more about collecting and planning strategy for me.

Since you were looking for game recs, I’d probably suggest Uncharted, God of War and Devil May Cry on PS5. If you had a Switch I’d probably suggest Bayonetta. I don’t think the newest Zeldas would be a good fit since you don’t really want exploration games and that’s basically the whole point of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom (wonderful games though). JRPGs often tell grand stories but they tend to be LONG. Like, 50+ hours long. I honestly can’t imagine what it feels like to get into gaming at an age when there are a million games across many different platforms with very different concepts. Whatever you decide to play next, I just hope you have tons of fun doing it :)

I feel like with age your taste for different types of games changes, most of my time was spent playing Call of duty and Battlefield games and never really playing anything else in my early years. As I grew up I started to change my games and found my self playing more Single player RPG's(role playing games), sandbox(building type games like Minecraft) and strategy games like Total war: Warhammer 1,2,3, Civilization VI, Xcom and so on.

Your journey raises an interesting point not mentioned by the video: Age of video game introduction. People do indeed change with age, but how does the time of video game introduction affect that process? What would Hannah have been like in the alternate universe where she got a PlayStation as a kid? How would nature hd nurture work then? If she avoided games for so long in this life, is she inherently predisposed to avoid them (were it not for the internet’s intervention)? Or is it just the foibles of fate at work? This comment is VERY late, but who really cares. In reference ot when you said that you were chasing the sense of accomplishment when you finished the game you were playing, pay attention to how you feel in that moment. Razbuten, who's Gaming for a Non-Gamer series you've already started watching, once said, "You know a game's good when you get that hollow empty feeling after beating it." This is a quotation that is frequently on my mind, and I've experienced it in a number of my favorite titles over the years. I find that, for me at least, it has to do with the end of the game a the realization, or understanding, that that experience I just spent all that time enjoying is now over, and I don't get to enjoy it in the same way anymore. I doubt this is something everyone experiences, but it's something interesting to keep int he back of your mind.

If the main drive is to beat the game, then shorter games are your best friend. There's so many amazing games at 5 hours or less. A lot of my favorites have challenging puzzles and incredible story to varying ratios. Some recs: Portal Inside Carrion Superhot Journey Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

For you, it's not about pretending to be someone who kills, its pretending to be someone who makes things happen. You want to see the result of your progress, not just to know you made progress.

I think you should try out different types of games to see what you like, and then go from there. ^^ Like get a good representative game from every genre and try it out. For example, I'm a completionist when playing games and I really enjoy fantasy games, so when I played Witcher 3 for the first time, I had to finish every single quest, get every single item, and then play it a couple of more times to experience every story and all achievements. When I played Dark Souls I had to once again, finish all the bosses, lick all areas clean, do all quests etc. I love horror games like Silent Hill and Bioshock too, I love platformers like Hollow Knight. But I also play competitive social games like League of Legends, Valorant, Call of Duty etc. I think you can definitely like games from all different genres so don't stay in a single genre but try branching out.

Just Imo, your still new enough in your journey that I wouldn't write anything off, secret pleasures have a tendency to sneak up on us and I urge you to try far and wide. Never miss an opportunity to fall in love with something. Still strongly suggest Fallout 4, the open world nature and depth of the game is meant to appeal to a lot of different types, you can play it as an rpg, or an fps, you can sneak through the whole game or you can armor up and blast your way through, you can collect everything or almost nothing, it has several different endings based on who you meet and work with throughout the game. It has systems for creating settlements that you can ignore or build a city. What you find yourself doing in the game would tell you a lot more than any video.

Play a Zelda…. Probably breath of the wild to start… or windwaker/twilight princess if you have access to them just because idk how well you will take to older “retro” style games

I think trying different genres is important. You've done the last of us. So story driven action with slealth elements is checked off. (Even though the genre varies a lot.) You tried Doom so pure adrenalin action. So what's left. Open world role playing like Skyrim/Fallout? Tactics like XCOM or Final Fantasy? Immersive story sims like Bioshock? Maybe a challenging test of patience like Elden Ring? I'd try a little bit of everything and find what fits best.

When you said you'd tried playing Doom, did you mean playing the new Doom? I was thinking it would be better starting with the 1993 version. That game was one of the ones that showed people how to actually play games who'd never played before.

I wonder if you might enjoy the Fallout games, specifically Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and Fallout New Vegas. They have decent stories and explosive weapons, but they're really open ended so I wonder if you might think they're too much. Outta those 3 choices though, I would recommend Fallout 4 for you. It's comparatively simple on the statistics/information side and has the best gunplay of all of them.

I feel like this video can easily leed to overthinking something that can be as simple as looking at the price tag of the games. Therefore I am not going to focus to much on trying to project what I think your personality is when making game recomendations. (I also feel like that can easily lead into streotypying since we all have unconsious biases). Anyway just looking at playstation store games that are less than 30$ and take less than 30 h to beat I might recommend for you to consider: 1.Battlefield 1 25,99 CAD 6 1/2 h to beat This is a first person shooter. You play as different soldiers in World War 1 and fight countless enemy soldiers trying to complete your missions. I am not sure how historically acurate this game is but I am sure some history buffs might like it. Also people who generally like army and shooting games. 2.Arkham Knight 24,99 CAD 23 1/2 h to beat This game is a sequal but I don't think it is completely necessary to have played the other games. You go around as batman beating criminals and trying to stop supervillains. The core essence is a power fantasy. The game has a story that I had mixed feelings about. Some things I liked some I didn't. I also feel a person's previous perception and feelings towards the character of batman and comicbook stories may influence how they feel about the game. 3. Lego Harry Potter collection 7,49 CAD 28 h to beat This game has a lot of puzzle solving but its aimed at children and parents with not much gaming experience so its not unnecesarily complex. It follows the story of all 7 harry potter books and 8 movies mostly following the movies. It has some child friendly humor that may be either funny or slightly annoying. Mostly this game is for people who want to explore the world of Harry Potter. Basically Hogwarts Legacy for kids that is a lot cheaper. Fran Bow 26,99 7h 45 min to beat This is a horror point and click game with disturbing subject matters and images. Fan Bow our main protagonist starts the game in a mental hospital where she was placed after both of her parents were brutally killed. Fran ingest special pills through out the game which allows her to interact with things that are not vicible or tangible in our regular reality. Fran escapes the asylum in order to find her cat Mr Midnight and get ot her aunt Grace. Through out her journey a scary demon creature who most likely killed her parents harasses her. As the story progresses things start becoming stranger and more fantastical. I think this game draws a lot of inspiration from Alice in Wonderland's story in the sense that once Fran leaves the asylum all reality starts disapearing as well. Keep in mind that I only recomended games here that I am familar with. Also I can't be completely sure about the prices or length of time to complete.

It would be cool to see you play This War of Mine, but I don't it is suitable for you yet (mainly the upgrade / build system in it). FTL would have been good, but that is not available for PS5. Tomb Raider would likely be good option. Maybe Diablo, but I wonder if you'd just get annoyed at the upgrade system as well. Maybe you should have played games in 90s and 2000s where upgrade systems where less prevalent :).

i have ADHD so i easily fit in almost all of these categories XD. my brain is a living contradiction. im also very introverted, with loudly extroverted tendencies (cause ADHD, blah blah blah). for instance something you brought up was you would hate playing on teams with people, but you would be lost without twitch chat. in a very similar way i sort of need to play multiplayer games with people to interact with. but im still going to play alone the vast majority of the time i want things to be done in my own way and i really dont want other peoples input if i have an idea of how i very specifically want to do something. i love minecraft its one of my favorite games. i genuinely just cant play on singleplayer worlds because then it just feels too empty. id rather play on a multiplayer world with nobody except for me logged on than a singleplayer world where only i can get on to it. so when i play multiplayer servers and someones like "do you want any help with something?" im just "like nah im good, you existing and interacting is all i need. you working with me might mess up a specific vision or thing i had in mind" its like im not even a control freak, i just genuinely hate people touching any of my things. XD thats one big thing for me when it comes to gaming.

As others have said. I think it's too early to decide. I would encourage you to explore a wide variety of titles. I'd recommend playing GRIS. - ALSO. Doom is a great game, however... By their nature, some games are inherently suited for one platform or another. For example, Platformers and Racing Games are WAY better with a controller. Whereas FPS game (First Person Shooter) Are best on Mouse and Keyboard. You CAN play them on controller. Many people do. but you are missing a part of the game. There is a degree of movement and action the game is designed for that controllers can't replicate. I'm not being elitist, Doom in particular actually convinced MANY people to buy a PC after experiencing the difference. I'm not trying to convince you to buy a gaming PC. they are expensive and you should explore more games before you commit to that. Just something to consider when choosing a game. - HOWEVER. There actually IS one game that you can play on a literal potato (yes literal) that will allow you to experience FPS games on KBM (keyboard Mouse). DooM (1993) - The Original Doom. It's on Steam for $5. or on XBOX Gamepass PC. The graphics have been upscaled a bit, some Quality of Life features added, so It plays like a modern game. I would encourage you to give it a try.

I think personality research is overall flawed. This video referenced the big 5 personality test and I have a lot of problems with that. Your "personality" as 5 numbers can't predict _shit_ about what you will do in a certain situation. It does predict a bunch of interactions... but so does a bunch of other random questions.

You're NOT an achiever, you are NOT motived by challange from what I saw in your gameplays. You don't want to actually complete EVERYTHING (achiever) nor do you want to beat the game in the most dificult and chalanging way posible. You just want to beat it because you sense you need to finish whatever you started to "check" a item in your list.
