The most important thing playing The Last of Us is directly in the Fireflies quote: "When you're lost in the darkness, look for the light." It's basically a game design term to show where you should navigate to, especially during tense or hectic sequence, by following the light. During the exploding gas station, there's a bright theater to the right, that's where they directed players, also all NPC runs to the right as well. Then when that way was blocked off too, there's a streetlamp showing the alley where should turn to.
@Lazarultos
@Lazarultos Год назад
This is surprisingly common game design across many video games. It's not true all the time (especially for more open world and non-linear games). But games that follow a certain path or narrative will often use subtle hints to direct players, such as bright light sources, large eye-catching features, and other things meant to draw your attention which usually show you the way to progress. Even if it's not true for every game, it's common enough that it's a useful rule of thumb for whenever you feel lost!
@TheSansationalSans
@TheSansationalSans Год назад
Exactly. They also gave you Tommy to follow directly and giving you some audio clues in his "Over this way!" type comments. They also gave him the only red shirt out of all the NPCs who all had dark colored clothing. He was easier to notice and stood out a little bit.

Your comment about The Last Of Us being straightforward wasn't wrong (the part about pathfinding differences between 2D and 3D games), but it's in a different way. The story is linear, and you will always visit the same areas in the same order each time you play through, but a lot of the levels and combat areas are quite open and varied to give the option of fighting the enemies or sneaking around them. Sort of micro open, macro linear.

Also, in some games, they will have the loops back be faster as a reward. A simplistic form is a fire escape. You get to lower the ladder so you can get back to a save point. But that only works if you see the fire escape and understand that the color differences on it means it will be an in-play item, along with that it was a promise for the future of your navigation in the building.

Something I noticed in this video- a button would show up like "Y" and you'd try to find it on the controller and panic a little at not finding it. Don't worry! Different game systems have different names for the buttons. Playstation has symbols (circle, X, triangle, square), while Xbox and nintendo use A/B/X/Y (though arranged in different orders). Games that give indicators will usually be giving you prompts appropriate for the controller you're actually playing on, so now that you already know about the "hidden" L3/R3 buttons, you should be good to go =)

I think the reason games like Dark Souls are so popular is how rewarding the feeling of finally winning is. Boss fights are essentially just fun puzzles and reaction-time tests. It's fun to get good at something and breeze through with your honed skill. But it's almost equally fun to hone that skill in the first place. As long as your patience doesn't run out, a nice challenge is a good time. Just gotta stay determined.

When I first started playing games, it was in a time when games always came with an instruction manual. And since I've always been the kind of person to do things by the book, I always read all of the manuals carefully, even back as a child. Which meant I usually had some sort of idea what I was getting into and how the game worked. By the time games started to have their own in-game tutorials and physical manuals became rarer and rarer, I already had played quite a lot of games and was used to the standard controls present in most games.
@thetalantonx

13:55 - That's a very good and terribly nuanced question. In short: yes. A level would be a subsection of a game that represents a way to save your progress AND divide the resource requirements of the game into smaller more manageable chunks. Levels, chapters, tests, instances (this is where you pass through a door/barrier/whatever to go into a separate worldspace like going into a building), it subdivides the game world into separate areas. "Open world" games have, shocker, an open overworld and the ability to move freely within it. Often, still, you'll go into places like caves or houses or whatever and you'll switch from the overworld map to the instance.

Find a game you like (Last of Us) and just start, it doesn't matter if it might be known as an easy or a hard game, what keeps you going will be your interest in the game. If you dislike one game, try something totally different, there are unlimited possibilities out there and something for everyone! that is actually part of the reason I think you should find a friend, because there is a huge barrier to go through to be able to enjoy those games, because they were made for people that already have certain expectations. so watching people play, or play with someone helping you, can be a much better experience than just being throw in the water and asked to swim. specially if its someone you really like.

Yeah, a good friend that knows when to give basic or useful info, at what point to give hints (if thats something you want) To not "backseat" by telling you too much or saying what is the best or "correct" way when it is not necessary. If she's playing on twitch and reading chat, it can be a lot to keep track of if a bunch of people are all telling you different things at the same time. Having a friend you trust, or just an assigned VIP/Modderator in chat that you only take tips from can make it way better. Hopefully people will behave and be helpful, while not giving too much/contradicting info at the same time. Wish her the best of luck, it's ok to fail or not understand something, and most of all hope she just has a good time.

The most adorable video of his is the one about Minecraft, if you're looking for something like that. He starts Lady off with no help at all, which goes about as well as you'd expect. Then, he starts giving her advice, which improves her enjoyment of the game. He then lets her have a go at the various game modes to see which one she likes most (free construction mode) and lastly joins in with multiplayer and playing cooperatively, which is the adorable part.

To be fair games barely ever come with manuals anymore. So a lot of us did have to read them back in the day, we didn’t just “know” how to do stuff. So the barrier for entry certainly is higher as control layouts in a menu aren’t the same as tips in a booklet.

I remember when my family first got Super Mario for the NES. There was this water level my dad was trying to play through, and he couldn't figure out how to get out of the water. None of us knew. This kind of game mechanic was new at the time. Eventually, my dad figured that if he paused and unpaused, he could do another swim move, then pause and unpause and do another, and in this way make it through the level. It was some time later when we figured out he didn't need to pause at all and he could just hit the button multiple times on it's own in order to swim. That moment taught me to try different things, even if I think I have the best method already figured out. R.I.P. dad. I miss having fun together.

it might not help that your controller buttons aren't colour coded if you're just getting into this stuff. Usually they have some colour associated to make it easier. top button being yellow, right button being red, bottom button being green and left button being blue. a lot of games display the colours as well as the prompt itself so with enough time you can... 1. see the button pop up using the associated colour 2. tap the button without really thinking about it

"WTF" was my first reaction when I was playing something on my friend's Playstation and accidentally pressed down on the stick and it did something. Best thing to do when starting a game is get to a menu and check the settings. Read what options they let you change. Read the controls. Turn on subtitles (this ams imtorpants). Test controls when you can. They often work together. Like if x = punch, does moving forward and hitting x make me punch moving forward? What if i run and punch? What if I jump and punch? What if i run and jump and punch? Gamers will know to do this while simultaneously progressing through the game but it can be worth taking the time to learn just what you can do and not progressing.

It may be a bit older, but seeing the way you perked up at the character creator got me thinking that the freedom to make whatever sort of character you want and play in any style you want (one or two handed or dual wielding melee, ranged, direct magic, summoning) and have a welcoming experience with an open world game that has a solid narrative makes it seem ideal.

The dash and jump button positions make sense to us, because you can hold "dash" with the middle of your thumb, while still have the "jump" button within reach of the tip of the thumb, meaning you can dash and without letting go the first button, just arch your thumb and push both buttons at the same time (a "running jump"). At least that's what I think. So almost every game with a gamepad will have that configuration. Some games make jump button at the top of the diamond and dash at the bottom of the diamond, and it's a major PITA. Those games are bad and should feel bad.

Not all games have discreet levels. Some are "open world," or a "metroidvanias," two philosophies of design that more or less have the entire game area open to the player. The more or less part is because they don't necessarily let you go wherever you want as you wish. Instead, you have to either find new abilities or items that function as keys to new areas. The original Doom, from the 90s, if it don't make you motion sick, is probably the best first person shooter to start with--just keep in mind that it's older (the graphics are of course dated), and the level design is purposefully maze-like and even after playing it since I was a kid I still have to use a guide to remember how to beat some levels. It lacks a true up/down axis for looking, you only need to look left and right--the 3D in the game is actually a technical trick the lead programmer came up with, it's not "real" 3D like modern games. It was designed with an auto-aim that helps you nail demons that are above or below you, as long as they are in your line of sight. It should be available for both PC and Playstation. There's also Stardew Valley, a game where you run a farm and cultivate relationships with your neighbors. It's a relaxed game, with good art direction, that could help you get used to the basic grammar of video game design.

A couple things not covered: 1) Different companies may try to make their controllers unique by changing A and B. By “A,” he means the right button. It’s B on Microsoft controllers. Sony controllers label it O. Often these days, there are options to change button mappings to personal preference. I often look at those settings first, but it’s only sometimes helpful. Modern games usually teach as you play. B. Gaming is like starting a job. You’re definitely gonna mess up, probably a lot. It is going to feel more natural over time, but largely, each game you play is the start of another job, and you have to learn all over again. You seem to enjoy learning, so hopefully that’s gonna be a good chunk of the fun.

"Do all games have levels?" No, not all of them do, but it is a common structure. In the case of Doom 2016, it's a modern entry into a classic series, it's use of self-contained levels you visit one by one is deliberately retro. Many popular games don't have anything resembling a level structure: Subnautica, for instance, is one large continuous environment.

The best thing you can do when starting a game is internalizing ITS controls, yeah many games share some ideas on what button on a controller typically does what but not always. Typically there will be a screen with the controls in a menu. Make sure to take a sec to get a feel for what a button does in the context of the game you are playing. When you've got the controls internalized, the challenges of a game get much easier because you then know your tools to tackle it with. After that, learning to assess what caused a failure. Did you miss a jump because your timing was off or was it a genuinely impossible thing,? It's easy to get stuck and grind your head against a wall trying to brute force something and miss the solution in the process. I'm stoked to see you break into more games because as the video said, it's a really fun hobby that has it's barriers to entry.

Funny enough there was a part were he was talking about how many ways a player can interact with a certain thing or trying to resolve a certain situation, then he showed a little bit of Divinity Original Sin (I Believe), Divinity and even more so Divinity 2 are games that even though they are turn based and graphically they are "Ok" they are asimetric so they are not "As Cool" as other games, they shine on The fact that you can tackle every situation in unscrypted ways, even extremely ridiculous ways, and the devs took note and made the game respond to those ideas and even change the dialog for the crazier ones in some cases.

This is so relatable! I always say: "I'm not into video games", but this is not the whole truth. In reality, I have no idea how to play and all the lingo confuses me. It's very possible that I would like to play them, if I really tried. However, I don't have the best hand-eye-coordination, so I suppose, I would probably never even get through the first level of any given game. People: Which modern game (it can come with riddles and secrets) would you recommend to a person like me who would like to discover the fun in gaming? (PC only, I'm not going to buy any kind of playbox)

I really hope you enjoy yourself above all else. It's a steep learning curve, but it's ultimately supposed to be fun! Gaming lead me down a great path in life, and now I have a career in tech because of all the side stuff I did as a result. My interest in computers began because of gaming, I run a podcast and stream, I'm informed and passionate about technology and games, and all of that culminated in me landing a great job with like-minded souls. I wouldn't trade a moment of it, and I love to share these games and experiences with other people, in the hopes it brings them the joy it brought me.

Razbuten's video is an excellent one. It really reiterate everything I learned when I got my game design degree (yes we all make mistakes) and some girlfriends in the past. I do feel it's really applicable in a much larger context. Ever helped your dad use his new smartphone? There so many languages/vocabularies these days it's hard to not miss some over the years.

This is why a game like Divinity Original Sin 2 would be great with a friend who could talk you through some of the basic stuff when you need help. But also allows turn based combat to allow you time to think about stuff and not punish you for taking time. In fact it rewards you to take some time to think and come up with the best use of a character and their abilities. But not every game is for everyone. So whatever you find that draws you in the most is always what's best for you. But gamers are always more than willing to help and share their passion for games with new people. 🙂

I brought up The Last of Us 2 a few years back to play with my mother, since instead when I visit I usually bring a new series or game.. but this time I was like this game was far better than any film or series I've possibly ever seen.. So I'll try something new. She loved it but she was beyond impressed with how I was playing it, from her view I was doing extremely difficult stuff while playing and talking to her at the same time.. growing up with video games you don't even think twice about the control mapping, since your hands do it automatically. Its like touch typing.. Once you learn how to play games it opens you up to some of the best stories and experiences you can have imo.

most games have levels, but that can either be defined by a broken up sections, or by the scaling of the enemy/opponent
@42percenthealth

Regarding your question at 13:49, not really. Some games like Skyrim are "open world", meaning that pretty much the entire game is available for you to explore from the outset. Dark Souls is divided into areas that could be called levels, but you can travel between them whenever you want. They are not like Doom, for example, which is segmented into actual levels which you complete in order. However, the term "level design" is often used to refer to how an area is designed, whether or not the area would properly be called a "level". Things like how you are meant to progress through it, whether it contains secrets or shortcuts, what kinds of enemies or other challenges are present, and loot/resources to be found there are all part of level design.

I'm currently playing with my 8 year old niece playing the Halo Master Chief Collection. Naturally, she struggled at first with the controls, but she got used to it. What she had more trouble with was knowing what weapons to use, shooting the covenant, and knowing when to go offense or defense, but we still have a lot of fun. By the way, if you haven't played the Master Chief Collection, I do recommend playing them at least once. It has Halos 1 - 4, ODST, and Reach, a d all the campaigns are fun, with my favorite being Halo 3.

One of my greatest strengths as a gamer is that I can pick up nearly any game and within a few minutes understand how the game works and what I should be doing. Having played and mentally deconstructed hundreds of video games I can even spot "holes" in the game where mechanics and abilities that I won't see until much later in the game will be. I read video games better than I do people. Probably explains why I'm still single.😂

"Do all games have levels" is exactly the kind of question that highlights the challenges a non gamer might have talking about games. Not because it's a simple answer or obvious it anything it's just like a fundamental language barrier. The answer is yes and no. Typically a level refers to a specific play area, often they are gated behind story or progression. Usually people say this to mean one complete and separated zone that might contain one segment of the story. Some games are open or open world which means that any given play area is accessible at roughly any time. But that doesn't mean an open world doesn't have levels, people will often refer to some of those areas as a level but not always. The term is useful for describing zones and progress throughout your journey but not all games use this language.

Watching Hannah's evolution I couldn't help think back to this video where he says something like he thinks that "in order to understand what the game is trying to get you to do, maybe you have to have started playing when you're still a kid". Hannah has definitely proven this untrue. When you're a kid you play the most simple of games, but Hannah has jumped in at the deep end with some pretty epic AAA titles and, whilst she struggled a bit at first, after having barely played 5 of them she is very much catching on to how these games work and how intuitive the mechanics are.
