You should totally play Doom and Tomb Raider! Both are considerably shorter than Mass Effect, but there's no reason you can't play all three games at the same time. Tomb Raider will feel most similar to The Last Of Us (but Uncharted is the most similar). Doom will be a real challenge for you, since it's First Person perspective and I don't think you have any experience with those (might be wrong) but you should try anyway! It is a total gamer power-fantasy and will make you feel like an unstoppable killing machine. Tomb Raider is full of spectacle, manageable action sections, light puzzle solving and platforming, a small amount of exploration, and some light story, while being quite linear. Doom playtime is about 11 hours Tomb Raider playtime is about the same Mass effect is more like 20 if you only focus on story missions, 45 if you're a completionist

Not every game should have a save state LOCATION you have to find, but the ones that do and implement it well (Isolation being one, FromSoftware's game is another, more so checkpoints than save states but same-difference for their gameplay mechanics), it really does bring up the tension because every save state feels like a god send. Feels like genuine moment of relief.

If you're starting to look at the design philosophy of games, the director of some of the most legendary Nintendo games in recent years Masahiro Sakurai has been making a series of videos talking about what he's learned about the artistry of video game design and team management. They're fascinating and bite-sized videos, and coming from Sakurai it's like learning physics from Stephen Hawking himself.

I would love a "Game Maker's Tooltit" and "Author's Tooltkit"-collab. GMTK discusses how developers tweak numbers to try to change how players feel, which can go from cautious when far from a savepoint or low on ammo and/or healing potions, but it can also make a player infuriated and annoyed that if theys truggle too much to get past a certain point. Same if there is limited ammo and they have "wasted it" and now they suddenly cannot get past a tough monster because they literally have no more bullets to bring its health down. I know you said that you are not a fan of Brandon Sanderson, but I do enjoy his "How to write Sci-Fi and Fantasy"-classes on YouTuibe as it kinda demystifies to concept of writing. In the beginning I always thought an Author simply started at the first word and kept going through the pages. I had no idea there was Beta-readers and the thought of going back and re-writing whole chapters when something didn't invoke the correct feelings was completely foreign to me. Similar to when you read up on the Psychology of how a Supremarket is designed (how the customer must move between the aisles, why fruits and veggies are usually early on in the store despite them being very bad at having at the bottom of the bag, why they have candybars etc at the cashiers). So I would love if you watched more of these types of videos but for you to also connect it to your writing or writing in general. How would YOU try to invoke a feeling of dread in a reader? How would you make a reader feel that the protagonist was in immediate danger? How would you write so that a reader feels that the protagonist is vulnerable and exposed and that the aliens can attack from any corner at any time? Or just any of the "Toollkits" available to an Author. Like the joke of how to make a reader/viewer know who the bad guy is, just have the person kick a puppy.

Ooh, I'm so excited for you Hannah, to finally peek behind the curtain of game design. Unfortunately, most of the videos I'd recommend are 30+ min (and on the longer side, several hours), so they're probably not a good fit for the reaction format (or they'd require a _lot_ of editing), but I still love to see people engaging with games as art, and thinking critically about gaming. Also, and I hate to encouraging you to spread yourself too thin, but maybe you should consider making another channel for the full VODs? I'm not a Twitch user, and since I don't get notifications when VODs are uploaded unlisted, I tend to miss out on them. I'm a little ashamed that I haven't even finished watching the playthrough of The Last of Us 1, but it's hard to stay on top of that when the only way to see if a new video is up is to check the playlist. It's also easy to forget if they never come up in your notifications or recommendations. Edit: But, if you ARE looking for recommendations in this same vein, I recommend the youtube channels Adam Millard (The Architect of Games), Afterthoughts, and eurothug4000

What kind of timing developers choose to go with is always interesting. Really interesting to hear about Alien: Isolation's save system, because a lot of older games had something similar due to hardware limitations. Dragon Quest on the original NES comes to mind, especially when titles started getting ported over to Gameboy. Nothing like seeing your power turn from green to red and rushing to the nearest save point before your AA batteries run out! A lot of first-person shooters have gone down the path of "tactical, super-fast John Wick" reload. It was really jarring when I started playing Day of Infamy, which has more realistic reload mechanics. Reloading itself becomes dangerous, instead of running out of ammo. Now you're choosing whether you risk running out of bullets clearing an area or if you turn yourself into a sitting duck.

Just like with almost everything else, gaming burnout is a real thing. Happens faster, the less thrilled you are with the games, but even with games that you absolutely love it happens eventually. Take breaks. Switch it up. Variety is the spice of life. Just make sure the spice you're consuming isn't poisonous.
@_inSight__
@_inSight__ Год назад
I think this is the biggest reason I wasn't keen on you trying The Last of Us as your first game. There's a certain amount of familiarity required to achieve the "aesthetics" the developers intended for the players if the players are learning games for the first time, paying attention to other people watching them learn how to play a game, and the simple fact that it was more about your learning to play a game than it was about what makes The Last of Us such a landmark achievement for video games. It's kind of like asking a kid to go watch a movie with you at the theater, but they aren't used to sitting for two hours and the speakers are too loud, and they don't have any attachment to growing attached to stories like that yet. I'm glad you're playing games, but it's definitely worth it to play something on your own and for yourself.

one of my favorite games design was far cry 3, the game really make you feel the main character, a bit sneaky at the start cuz you are literally a rich kid who can't do shit, then a into a literal psycopath going after people zooming through fortresses not even trying to hide like you are some super human, shooting everyone, thowing knives and jumping people from underwater or from the top of a house and eating bullets like candy, not just that but at the start you do everything to leave the island but at the end you just like the main character, you don't want to leave anymore, at least not yet, you want to go after the people that bothered you and hurt your friends, you want to kill and make them suffer as they did you

Video games are weirdly actually the perfect simulation tool for women to training themselves how to react in intense situations instead of just collapsing. Like your excitement when you find tape in TLOU, SEE, you're slowly getting it. Now if the game limited you MORE in supplies and ammo, you'd then have to start testing your skilling and taking more risks in stealth and melee combat to conserve what you barely already have. At the same time, learn more and more tiny things about the mechanics of the game. Learning the distance need to do a stealth joke, jogging when human enemies are around because they can't hear you, but infected will because as they slowly lose their eye sight due to the fungus, their hearing gets better etc. Resulting you having to crouch and REALLY slowly walk to not aggro them. Survival horror and on hard difficulties is the best training tool. Then you'll carry all that video game meta into the next game you play and so on and so on to the point you'll be able to pick and master a new game within like a few hours. All the accumulated knowledge on the mechanics of OTHER games has trained you and keeps training with every new game.

That was way Dark Souls was so hard. Because the game is punishing, you feel accomplished when you finally beat the boss or make progress through the level. If you didn't have that tension and a fair challenge, there isn't a sense of accomplishment when you overcome it. Which I think that dev always does a good job in.

Breaks are good. Burnout sucks. Have fun being back 👍

You can always make backup videos and no one will know you had a break. 😉

I do that as well, but 2 years is a long time to post every week. And I'm in school 40 hours a week, plus I was working as a personal trainer, writing my novel, and two RU-vid channels. I needed a real break

@@HannaHsOverInvested RU-vid has certainly changed your life. You started making videos on it to advertise your books and possibly learn, something about games. And now you've bought yourself a games console, play games and wonder what your book would be like if it were a game. Good luck Hanna 👍🏻

I haven’t heard of this channel, though it reminds me of AoG who has similar game design essays: youtube.com/@ArchitectofGames

You should try to find a group of friends to play games with. Single player story driven games are great but nothing beats a good co-op/multiplayer session with some friends. I would highly recommend Valheim if you're looking for something that's not competetive and easy to enjoy. Don't get me wrong there is plenty of action but you can also spend a lot of time building, farming resources, and exploring.

For how long can you be a 'new gamer' if you don't even try?

burnout is a real thing and whenever you take a break it''s 100% understandable with how much info is being thrown at you. lmao have a good day!
