In recent history, two of my most uncomfortable nights "sleep" were due to air mattresses on a cold ground. Gah! A comment on your emergency beacon. A buddy that rides like the devil, dirt and dual sport bikes; mainly in the wilds of Nevada carries a sat phone, cell phone and the In Reach. He used to carry the Spot (much like yours) but it had two glaring faults. One: it was one way so he had no way to know if the beacon was received. Two; No way to tell the receiver what level of emergency you were in. Maybe he was in a real mess with critical injuries, or maybe he was in a mechanical fix and needed a tow truck. So aid may come, but perhaps not the correct aid. He carries three methods of contact because they each have their faults so with coverage over lap he's pretty sure a call will actually go out. All three are two way. Something to consider.

Ronald, the next PLB from Orolia has a ReturnLink powered by the EU's Galileo satellites. It will flash to let you know your distress beacon has been seen. Additionally its MUCH more accurate than the current system and also MUCH faster. I'll be sure to do my best get one in Thomas' hands when they come off the production line to so to speak. As a long time subscriber to Thomas' channel and very much admirer of his work, you cant imagine how pleased I was to get this to him =D

Hi Ronald, good points. PLB's aren't based on the same technology as Spot or In-reach as it uses the free to use, dedicated 406MHz frequency which is monitored by global search and rescue a call centre. Your right to highlight the level of emergency, PLB's like the FastFind are only to be used when a person is in distress and needs external help. It combines the alert signal with GPS & Galileo receivers to pinpoint your location, has a guaranteed 24h activation time and has global coverage, so help is a button away. It is a one way device, a new version call the FastFind ReturnLink will be available in November which includes a return signal confirming receipt of your call and that your location is known.

Hi Thomas, firstly total envy that you are in Iceland. It really is an amazing place, as you already know, having done several trips there. The people are fantastic, the scenery knocks you out, the weather is on constant change. So, yes, I am totally envious of you right now. And I am looking forward to lots of great videos from this particular tour. Secondly you mentioned the X-T4 and the video issues. You might like to take a look at Pal2tech’s latest RU-vid Vlog which came out yesterday. Fujifilm Video Tips ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P5BX0FZQfhY.html which even though it says beginners, we can always pick up some useful tip or trick from anything we watch. Tip 5 at 8min 12 sec might be handy. OK, well enjoy your time in Iceland. Looking forwards to seeing all your Saga. Richard.

Top tip for travelling with film: Chuck one or two rolls of Ilford Delta 3200 into your bag... Some airports will only check your film by hand if your film is ISO 800 or above.
@joshuatatro4503
@joshuatatro4503 4 года назад
This is indeed a good call, but I will say that I've had some grumpy security personnel at London Heathrow ruin some rolls of Delta (among other film) because they weren't willing to hand check *anything*. But most of the time, this does the trick!
@gabrielstroup
@gabrielstroup 4 года назад
Why would they only handcheck film at that high of ISO?
@AlexIvory

Gabriel Stroup scanners will ruin film of that speed. Whereas anything less is deemed safe to scan.
@shouryaray
@shouryaray 4 года назад
@@gabrielstroup Because their fancy X-ray scanner is now approved to scan film upto ISO 800. If you don't believe that, then do as the OP recommends. Toss a really ISO roll of film in the pack so that they are forced to hand check the film.

That Hasselblad takes me back to my student days in the '70s. I couldn't afford one then, and I still can't. I heard some audio clipping on the XT-4 even on manual. The AF problem is a well documented flaw, which is sad because it's almost perfect otherwise.

Interesting video. Lots of gear. What I would tell everyone watching this video is that Thomas is "Car Camping". He's not "Hiking and Camping". You can't bring all that gear if you are hiking 10, 12 KM each day over rough terrain before you camp for the night. I went on a 75 KM hike last year and my companions failed to understand the difference. They were wonderfully set up for camping but had WAY to much gear. 55 Pounds each before counting the camera gear. Just something I feel I must mention.

Standered focal length is the diagonal of the film /sensor so for a square format the sqaure root of (60*60) + (60*60) = sqaure root of 7200 = 84.85mm or 85mm

For a cold weather inflatable sleep pad take a look at Klymit or similar. You will compress your sleeping bag underneath you when you lay on a flat or slightly ribbed pad like yours. You lose your insulation that way because you can't trap any warm air in the down of your bag underneath you. Klymit pads allow for gaps in their design and let your sleeping bag fill them, trapping warm air and thus insulating you better .How on earth though you can fit all that in a 70Ltr I'll never know, I can fill a 120Ltr Bergen and still need a carry on for my trips.

I've heard that if you have one of those reflective space blankets, put that under your pad and it helps reduce heat loss at little to no weight or space taken. However, if you want to reuse it, the cheap ones are difficult to refold and might tear, get a Sol brand which are designed for reuse.

Its always amusing to see young photographers going "back" to film, having come from film to digital myself 6 years ago. I must say though, it would be money better spent to shoot 4x5 field camera than medium format. Coming into digital from film was a learning curve, but much of what I did printing in the darkroom transfers well to Lightroom and Photoshop. It seems most who try to go the reversed path, seem to have difficulty getting film right. Exposure is the biggest stumbling block it seems.

Thomas, thanks for the mention of the FastFind PLB. The new Galileo version you have was released last year and is around £200. Unlike other tracker devices a #PLB uses the dedicated, free to use, 406MHz frequency monitored by search and rescue coordinators. There are no subscription fees, no call centres and unlike phones a PLB offers 24h activation power, 6 years shelf live and global satellite coverage. Only to be used in emergencies that require outside assistance, 406MHz devices like the #FastFind have saved over 43,000 lives. Enjoy your remote camping.

The ground beneath you is a cold sink and will ’suck’ the heat out of a body/mass in contact with it. (You’d be warmer with actual air between you and the ground). The thin pad wouldn’t stop the thermal transfer to the earth. Like night to day switching to something similar to the Thermarest Xtherm.

If you want a magnifier for your new prism finder, you maybe able to source a Hasselblad V view magnifier for PME51 prism finder. It attaches to the diopter on the prism and allows me to focus on eye lashes for head shoulder portraits. I have been using one for portraits for over 20 years. Couldn’t focus without one these days. Try eBay or KEH. Cheers.

I've been building my camping pack up for a while too. I went with Dyneema tent and pack. And I found insulated dyneema bags that can carry lenses on Ebay and provide protection. It's like bubblewrap inside. They use them for coolers. Anyway, Dyneema tent is around 1.2lbs or so. And the Dyneema backpack is around 3.5lbs lighter then the Shimodo. It is expensive, but not compared the the price of that Shimodo. Gear to heat up for food stuff is all titanium. Water bottles are all cheap plastic ones as they're super light. For hiking a sawyer water filter screws on the top of the water bottles so you just fill and go. No pumping. The quilt is the way to go like you have. And the great pad. The reason I spent so much on ultralight gear is so I could bring camera gear. Without an insane pack weight. My pack with camera gear weighs what my old pack with old technology gear and no cameras weighed. I hate lugging heavy packs and it just makes it so much easier on you when you get old. Like I am now at 52. lol Enjoy, Iceland is absolutely amazing.

Made the mistake once to camp with a sleeping mat without any insulation. My wife and I fled into a hotel after 2 nights :D. Took her camping again two years ago, destination: Skye. So we got ourselves some very well insulated sleeping pads. They were quite expensive, I went for the minimalist size, my wife got the huge comfy size :D. No regrets of that purchase, we slept really well, nice and warm. Also got myself a Garmin Inreach. Yes there is a subscription, but you can put it on hold when not needed.

if you are looking for a good insulted pad then consider the Nemo Tensor Insulated, you can get it in all kinds of sizes, i got it in a regular length (183cm) but wide so i have more room and it only weighs 580g and even less for the regular height/width model, and its comfortable as hell, no crinkle since the insulation is suspended internally, and comes with a pumpsack so it doesnt develope mold and is easier to blow up.

Funny. I just bought a Garmin Inreach. PLBs are fine but you cannot interact with rescuer giving information like how you are, what your problem is, which is your state and so on. Plus, battery is not rechargeable so every now and then you have to send it in to get a new battery. But, I surely agree these devices, also the ones subscription-based, for whoever find himself wandering around alone, are a priceless peace of mind. And happy you finally switched to Fuji, I feel it :-)

Watching you now and I see you've brought a prism for shooting at head level, as if a Hasselblad can no be shot just fine with the stock waist level finder, which is a bogus point. First, hold your camera, either by hand or tripod or with a good monopod, at eye level and turn it on its side and 'boom' you've got a view to the screen beside you, as you needed to turn your side toward your subject. A Hasselblad 500 series wearing the flash handle is also an aid to eye level shooting. You can also reach a higher view point by holding the camera above your head, with your back to the scene which gives you an easier viewing of your viewfinder. Practice using your Hasselblad 500 series camera, even the EL/ELM/ELX until you discover for yourself, all the possibilities of the waist level finder, before buying expensive used kit that you must add to your hiking or camping bag. IMO.

Just a quick comment: it’s never easy but to shoot down you can invert the camera (use the camera upside down) or to shoot at eye level, you can use the camera on its side (winder facing down), for example. That’s the beauty of square format, there’s not one way only to hold the camera. I usually try stuff like that with my TLR and it works after fiddling with it a bit. Have fun. ;)

the noise issue of XT 4 should be related to the internal compressor/limiter which is actively leveling the signals. And it tried too damn hard to amplify/squash the signals that the level is so hot sometimes, that camera's own EMI interference(or maybe other electronic devices.) started to be picked up by the circuit and gets recorded ot the track. Most people like to heat up the already "overheating" R5 video limitation/restrictions topics at the moment. But I thought it might suits you better than the R6. You don't need to film for longer periods but just random run and gun recordings which would never lend it to those sticky situations.But then you do need a B camera as well. So I think it is actually better set for you. R5 on the tripod doing the job, pull out R6 do some vlog or some other differently framed shots. Sounds like a good working combo. And you only bring two cameras, just like with 5Dm4 and M50. Difference being both full frame and capable of high quality image potential. But it is a shame that they jam packed absolutely huge amount of video features in R5 making it so much of an investment, but people like us shooting landscapes/travel shots all the time can't fully appreciate its potential, but wasted it together with a huge part of our wallets. My hope still lingers as the rumor sites were takling about a more still image centric EOS Rs body potentially coming out later, which is gonna be our turn.

Great video - one note: Iceland is open to travelers from the EU/Shengen Area approved list of countries. This currently excludes the United States, which is a real bummer (though I absolutely understand why, as many of us and certainly our leadership haven't earned anyone's trust). Likewise, Icelandair isn't really processing any refunds as they're on the verge of bankruptcy, so I would go a-booking for future dates right now (ask me how I know...).

Great video, although I don’t believe you can have too much film! I’ve wanted a 501CM for years but now I think I want a FujiFilm GFX 100. Some people are never satisfied!

Love the update to the kit. Great choice opting for the X-T4, makes a ton of sense. Look forward to seeing how your film photography develops on this trip, pun intended! Just a quick note, if you edit the time stamps in the description to include one starting at 0:00, intro perhaps, it will bring up the chapters feature in the video. Have a great trip!

FYI, your Portable Power can charge a phone ~4x, not 200x.

Just got a shimoda x30. It's very nearly, almost, dare I say it, the perfect camera bag...

I was looking at the x50 but may go for the x70 for camping... Decisions decisions! Do you like your x30??? Anything you don't like?

I’ve been shooting out of the shimoda explore 40 for a few years and have been saying the same thing since the day I got it that it’s perfect. Ask me 18 months ago if it needed anything different and I would say, “no it’s perfect.” Fast forward to this year and I got the x70 for some bigger excursions and somehow, SOMEHOW... they managed to make their already perfect explore series even more perfect...er 😂

@@zoltanlaszlo6673 so far it fits all my needs, comfort wise it's the best I've experienced. My main issue is I find most camera bags, particularly ones aimed at hiking, aren't fitted as well for women. But shimoda have seemed to accommodate well for women, better than other brands I've used before. I'm not a huge fan of the roll top but they've even thought of that too with the zip at the front. So to summarise...there really isn't much I can fault? Maybe that there's lots of extra straps to cinch down and add accessories which I dont use but yeah I'm reeeeally nit picking now

@@SamLucas26 yeah I'm kicking myself I didn't jump on the Kickstarter campaign and snagged a bargain! But I'd never really heard of them until a few weeks ago. They've really thought of (almost??) Everything!

Duke_Of_Hammertime TV I’m the same way, mostly, but with shimoda, I’ve become such a believer that I would say to just buy it 😂 But again, I’m the exact opposite of unbiased when it comes to shimoda, but I’ve become unbiased because of using their products, so take that with a grain of salt lol
