NEW -Glacial Outburst Flood Just Started And What Does It Mean?

The glacial flood from the ice cauldrons under Vatnajökull Glacier is something that we know quite well although we can always expect those events to undergo some changes. This is still a minor event but large enough for the Civil Protection Agency to declare a level of uncertainty until we know how large event this will become. Tonight, Wednesday night the flood is growing quite slowly, slower than to expect actually, but we know it could change fast.
The MET office operates an extensive water monitoring network and the river Skaftá is here:

When Vatnajokl (pardon my spelling) erupted sometime around 2003 or so maybe? I can’t remember the year, but a (Fox) News “meteorologist” in the US reporting on the incident said it is ”impossible to believe that such a cold place could have a volcano”… LOL… I nearly fell out of my chair laughing at the doofus comment. Par for that channel, but still. I always think of this when this volcanic system is mentioned. thought you’d enjoy a chuckle. Thank you for your video! Beautiful beautiful landscape… and stay safe.

maybe said x-pert would like to contemplate that our planet inside is really hot and mostly a liquid, and we just happen to live on an eggshell exterior that has cooled solid next to space. poke it too deep and there's definitely something hot and melty waiting to come up.
@BellaBarossa
@BellaBarossa Месяц назад
I think Grimsvotn erupted in 2005? And again in 2011. I often shake my head at the poor reporting volcanic eruptions can get when it's clear that geologists have not been consulted. (Can we just stop reporters from referring to ash clouds as 'smoke'? I'd cringe less 😂) Reporting on the Icelandic volcanoes is particularly entertaining, as nobody seems to know how to pronounce them. 😊
@Dragrath1
@Dragrath1 Месяц назад
@@busydadscooking001 While really very hot the inside of the Earth, only a small bit is molten because the high pressures generally keep the mantle solid except where decompression allows the uppermost layers of the mantle to melt or alternatively additional heat and compositional melt changes i.e. water infiltrating above a subduction zone into the overlying mantle wedge and lowering the melting point of the rock. But as for the general point yeah hot stuff comes out all the time in cold places as both Iceland and western Antarctica are volcanically active not to mention that you have subduction in the Aleutians and Kamchatka lol.
@eirintowne
@eirintowne Месяц назад
It could almost have made sense in reverse; that such a volcanic place could have a huge glacier on top of it, But even that question reveals that a person doesn't understand the difference between weather, climate and tectonic activity, and then there's the interaction of volcanic and tectonic activity on top of that. Such people seem to lack the impulse to ask the wonderful question "Why?", probably due to how they were raised. I keep asking why about so many things, and it is always fascinating to learn the chains of events leading to things like jøkulhlaup!
@M6Cabriolet
@M6Cabriolet Месяц назад
🤣🤣 things that never happened for $1000 Alex. No meteorologist said this. You are just trying to bash Fox with your idiotic ideologies wherever you can. Otherwise you wouldn’t say “par for the channel”. Keep your bs politics out of such a nice and informative channel.

But as always mother bature love to throw a spanner in the works and gives you all another challenge. I don't think anyone would pass up a chance to see any part of iceland,its so alive as an island. And i cannot believe how quickly new roads are built to keep the country moving(probably the wrong choice of words!)it is unbelievable. Here in the uk they cant fix a pot hole in six months never mind re route an entire highway! A proud and hardworking nation for sure. Keep safe my friend.

Oh boy potentially exciting stuff...not necessarily in a good way...Do the cauldrons produce lahars. I don't know if regular volcanic melt water run off is considered a lahar or not and I am not certain how tall the volcanoes are either ...or if that is a contributing factor That turned into a much bigger question than I intended Thankyou for sharing , I hope you get some excellent footage if something does get heated
