New golf balls vs old golf balls, how much longer do they really go? Mark Crossfield and Coach Lockey hit the dunlop 65 golf ball from 1929 and test it up against the Srixon Z STAR golf ball. This Old ball vs new golf ball will show what has happened to the world of golf over the last 60 years or so. If its the Titleist ProV1 or the Srixon golf ball or a Bridgestone golf ball the world of golf and the golf courses have seen huge changes. This is one of the most interesting tests Mark has ever done at it really shows how golf has evolved for the better and the worst over the last few decades. The golf ball has seen huge developments in materials, aerodynamics design and durability which has had huge effects on how we play the game of golf.
In the comments below what do you think will be the distance difference between the old golf ball and the new golf ball?

I loved this video! I started with Titleist Professional 90 and then on to Spalding Z Balata so that must have been about 1987-88 originally. So glad that the balls don’t feel like marbles first thing in the morning. Always used to drop them into a glass of warm water in the winter!

The problem with these kinds of tests is that, even thought the old balls were never hit, they have been sitting around for decades, surely losing some elasticity. I'm sure they didn't perform as poorly when they were actually new.

Also, it might be worth cutting one open. I suspect that the elastic winding might have become less electic over the years, as I don't recall them being quite that unforgiving in terms of distance.

In the 1970s, when I was a beginner golfer about 12 years old, my granddad, who was in his 70s and had quit golf earlier because of arthritis, gave me his old golf balls. Those balls dated from the 1950s, when he had last played. Compared to the Titleist balata balls of the '70s, those old balls were just awful. One of the cracked in half when I teed off with an iron. Those Dunlap balls you were just hitting almost certainly are not representative of their performance 60 years ago. The materials have probably dried out and lost a lot of their elasticity.

excellent points. But you have to admit the old driver with the new ball vs the new driver with the new ball was still an incredible difference in yardage just in itself.
@craigvn1
@craigvn1 4 года назад
I do agree the old balls have probably "gone soft". But even if they were 40 yds short, that is still 60yds difference to modern. Then factor in the approach to the green, and holes are easily playing 50+ yds shorter today than 50 years ago.

I recall buying Dunlop 65's in the 70's and I'm pretty certain from the writing on those balls that they are from the late 60's or very early 70's. The balls will definitely have deteriorated over time so it is hard to compare realistic results. I agree there was a big difference between hitting the Z Star with both the old and new drivers but another thing you didn't mention is the difference in shaft length, the modern drivers are at least an inch and a half longer that the old wooden headed clubs. Shows you how good Jack Arnie & Co were

I’m guessing 30 yard shorter in carry distance with old club and smaller older ball from 1965. Jack Nicklaus won the 1963 PGA long drive contest with old driver and smaller ball hitting it 342 yards. He won a money clip which he still uses today. They had the same contest at the 2018 PGA Championship and the winner hit it 341 yards with new Driver and bigger new ball. That’s pretty impressive that Jack hit it a yard longer in 63 with old equipment.

I’ve gone backwards in tech, started to collect hickory all the way through to the great mid 90’s including different types of aged balls to make same era sets, for me it takes the competitiveness out of it and brings back the enjoyment not only of playing the older more traditional clubs but refurbishing them to, taking out and re pinning re whipping etc, I went to two of my local pro shops and neither of them could help,

I was reading a golf instructional article and it mentioned that it was not optimal to have a 42 degree launch angle if your ball speed was only 75 MPH with the driver, but I wasn't sure if they were right. Thanks for testing that for us because, once I saw you reproduce those numbers in your test and the ball only carried 82 yards, then it all started making sense. The article also mentioned that there won't be a lot of roll if the descent angle is 57 degrees and it appears they were right. Well done and thanks for confirming the premise of the article.

@garyglad
@garyglad 4 года назад
Sadly, I am old enough to remember balata covered 1.62" balls. They were quite fragile and the one good thing about them was that tour pros would use a new ball every hole and throw the used balls to the crowd 18 times per round. Good for souvenirs! I recall a Golf Digest article many years ago where Titleist were quoted as saying that Haskell-style balls had a very short shelf life: the core windings would split and the cover hardened over time. Perhaps your Dunlop 65s are past their best hit by date. In their day, they would have been a bit more responsive off the clubface even with their primitive aerodynamics.

FINALLY i've witnessed some RU-vid golf reviewers doing my "dream test". I had a hunch it was going to be like this, but it's nice to see the results play out with hard data from a guy with an excellent swing. Makes you wonder exactly how much of the performance in today's professional game is due to equipment or the supposed talent of guys who are "physically superior" with all the intense workout regimens (well, at least in my opinion i'm not really wondering at all). Excellent test and presentation, and thanks for keeping those persimmon mis-hits in the video. It was a different game back in the 80's and earlier that a lot of the youth in today's game I feel don't really appreciate (and i wouldn't want to go back there, i love these new modern drivers!!)

Haha great for me I started with the 65 and play the z star now. Back then pretty much the 65 was the pro v1 of its day it was very very popular (nowhere near the choice of today of course) We didn't hit up on it the way you were that came a wee bit later... You need to try drive it forward with a level type hit.. Preferably with a wee draw and then you might get it. You have to hit it out the screws so no top half hit its got to be a flusher.

So this makes me respect the golfers of old so much more. That was simply amazing. I started out with persimmon woods and hit them fairly well back in the 70s. The modern ball/club combo are made to launch the ball higher with low spin. With the older balls & clubs, were you expected to launch the ball on a lower flatter trajectory, with more spin that would cause the ball to experience a mini-balloon rise, and then drop? I remember pictures of trajectories on the back of the boxes of old 1980s Top Flite XL boxes that used to show how much each Top Flite XL ball model would rise and fall at the end of its flight.

Per the USGA: Until 1990, it was permissible to use balls of less than 1.68 inches in diameter in tournaments under the jurisdiction of the R&A, which differed in its ball specifications rules from those of the USGA. This ball was commonly called a "British" ball, while the golf ball approved by the USGA was simply the "American ball".

180 wasn't a good drive though Mark you are hitting old technology in the modern style but that was how you got the best out of it. In the 1970s, the average drive on the European tour would have been around 250 yds. The famous Jack Nicklaus drive on the 18th at St. Andrews in 1970 was downwind on dried out fairways. Having said that, he did hit it over the back of the green (maybe 340 yds).

The Dunlop though smaller -- and we were told it would go farther -- was not a particularly hot ball. The Titleist was hotter -- but your distances are not as good as we used to get. A new balata ball would go pretty good. 260 carry wasn't uncommon. But they certainly did spin more. I just think it was a different game. Drivers weighed between 13.5 and 14.5 ounces. And hitting balata off a cycolac insert sounded so sweet!

You've got a duff ball there, 180 yards! I play only vintage clubs (wooden woods) and often use old 1.62" balls, I'm a bang average 14 handicap and I can get over 180 yard carry pretty consistently. Even "new" old balls out the wrapper vary considerably, if they've not been stored well you can get some right shockers.

Sorry for all the comments love this subject!! Extra yards doesn’t affect the course really; even if you rain the technology in the same players will still win and still hit it further Big hitter might be hitting a 9 instead of a wedge in but shorter hitters still 3 clubs back. Just a thought. And course management has changed since which balances it all out, courses now have more manicured harder faster greens which are more difficult to hold, which also brings “grain” into play, than the less manicured softer greens of old.

The 65 was a reference to Henry Cotton shooting that score in the 1934 British Open (that he went on to win). The ball in the video is more advanced than the one he used, and Royal St George's was playing at over 6700 yards that year. If we get an Open at St George's this year, it's worth remembering that using a worse ball, considerably worse wooden clubs than in this video, and with the course not in the same pristine condition as it is now for majors, Sir Henry went round in 65 off the tips!!!

If you look across the time line of the golf ball from the feathery to the current ProV1 you will see that the ball modernized golf leaps and bounds before the technology in golf clubs. In fact the Guta percha golf ball made golf accessible to the masses because the previous balls were too expensive for the middle class. The evolution of the golf ball has helped golf appeal to the masses because the game became more playable to the average Joe. I think the R&A and USGA need to limit the golf ball at this point right now. They cant allow it to go farther because if they do they will basically be burying a lot of great courses.

Jack Nicklaus had great power, but the ball he was playing was in no way comparable to the one in this video. That ball is from 1929, and it surely must have deteriorated over the course of 90 years, even if still wrapped. But the golf ball in 1962-1986 when Jack was winning majors as a pro was in every way superior to Mark's ancient Dunlop ball, even if the Dunlop ball were in pristine condition.

Mark Newkirk interesting on the date as Henry Cotton didn’t shoot the course record ‘65’ until 1934 Open championship at Sandwich - when the ball was released to celebrate this feat. Maybe Mr Crossfield would like to comment on the date? However my point being that a Dunlop 65 was still available in the 80’s and the ball technology, combined with persimmon drivers from 40 yrs ago would still be far inferior than today’s. Mark - settle the argument, do another video - Jack’s clubs/balls vs Tiger’s. Keep it simple, do Jack 1986 Masters win vs Woods 2019.

@@drivingrangeking Sorry - not trying to start any argument with you! The description with the video says: "Mark Crossfield and Coach Lockey hit the dunlop 65 golf ball from 1929 and test it up against the Srixon Z STAR golf ball. This Old ball vs new golf ball will show what has happened to the world of golf over the last 60 years or so." So either the date is wrong and should be 1959, or he meant 90 years instead of 60. I suspect the date is wrong, because you are correct about Henry Cotton. Even so, the ball is drastically aged, and based on its dimple pattern and appearance, it is clearly an inferior ball to what Jack Nicklaus would have been playing at his prime.

Mark Newkirk didn’t take it as an argument, but think it’s a very good debating point. We often consider if golf is easier ‘now’ or harder ‘then’ (or vice versa). Could make an interesting vlog from Mark Crossfield. In the meantime - keep swinging 😉

Great video and just shows how bad R and A have been in stopping distance verses skill . I have selection of hickory clubs that are playable if required. Need to use soft ball though .

It's amazing how much smaller the old ball looks, but in reality it measures 1.62" compared to 1.68" for the new ball, so only 6 hundredths of an inch difference. I remember swapping from small to large, the game became a little easier, but what you need to know is, that when the first large ball came out, they were manufactured similar to the old balls, so not a great deal of difference. See if you can get some Dunlop 65i's to compare with the Dunlop 65's, that would be interesting

Back in the day, the driver was a very unforgiving club. Anyone that was good with the driver was generally pretty good through the bag. Now, with 460cc heads, driving is *so* much easier. The trouble is I’m getting too old to take advantage of it.

Idea! Dunlop 65 1.62 v 1.68 American Size as we called it. How much spin and distance did we gain or loose with the change over. Might need to the distance thing outside. Don't expect Launch Monitors have a 1.62 setting.

What year was the Dunlop manufactured. We played with wooden clubs and balls manufactured in the later 60's and were hitting the ball 300 yards then at age 17, of course that was at 4200 ft. altitude in Utah. We drove several of the 4 par greens. I do believe the technology is better now, but in the 60's - 70's we still hit the ball a long way as did the pro's

I am liking these vids. Would love to see a comparison of eras with different era balls and drivers. Maybe 3 different tests, 1. Same new era ball different ages drivers, same era ball with same era driver, then modern driver with different era balls. Keen to see tipping point and what was biggest jump.

Have a word with ray, I was under the impression all these gains are coming from golfers now resembling bodybuilders.

Grat video. Would it be worth checking how spin and distance performance degrades as a 2020 ball gets older - i.e., the performance of a new ball out of the sleeve versus how it performs after 10 rounds of golf (or 200 driver hits)?

Great video lads I remember the old ball, then going to the new those old balls flew through the wind well. I have being saying for years there should be a Tournament ball for Pros to reign the distance back not build longer and longer golf course. Can't wait to watch the video old ball Persimmon Woods and true blades this could be a classic guys. Possible other video if you could get some Balata balls with the old clubs cheers Peter

Finally an honest review of modern versus old. Why is it so hard to give respect to the generation that played this stuff? No way pencil armed Bubba or 5 foot Ricky could bring it any faster than Nicklaus or Weiskoph... It only took 10 years, but thanks Mark and Coach.

180 carry??? I am sure I used to hit it further than that! Dunlop 65, Slazenger B51 and the Penfold Ace, for Blofeld comedy value were all the nuggets of choice. High spin, soft covers, used to have to swap it every time you bladed one. Remember, golf courses were not watered in the same way then, so in summer they ran for miles.

I know this is a strange/specific thing but I’d recommend checking out the 180 degree rule in filmmaking in regards to the camera set up in the simulator studio. The way you guys have the two cameras positioned now, it doesn’t appear that you’re looking at each other and it creates a disconnect for the viewer. Just suggestion!

having grown up playing the old small balls :-) in the summer you got a lot of run and also they felt much better in the wind, not surprisingly. As soon as we got the big ball though the ball sat so much better for irons and chipping. I can't remember the putting specifically, but the thought was the big ball rolled better- which also made sense. Also the first big balls were nothing compared to the beasts of today. Did not Peter Thomson win all his British opens playing the small ball?
