As a former Greyhound driver I wouldn’t enforce those rules. It’s not worth angering the passengers. I got out a year ago after being screwed over by Greyhound one too many times. Good riddance!

Well from what I've seen greyhound treat their customers like absolute garbage. I've seen people being treated like less than a human being is disgusting. I've never seen a company leave such random people out in such large Open Spaces where anything can happen to them. That would never happen in the UK but the fact that the weather in the United States is also much worse I'm sorry but from a humanity as well as a business point of view greyhound other absolute pits.

As a former Greyhound driver from 1981-1985, I can tell you that this plan is simply not workable. If the company wants to hire an attendant/conductor to manage that nonsense, more power to them. Personally, I don’t care where you sit. It doesn’t matter to me now. I switched careers and became an airline mechanic. I make more money and I don’t have to deal with people.

I am blessed that Spirit, Frontier, and Amtrak exist. I had to ride Greyhound a few years ago as my car was getting repaired and I needed to make a quick trip to Pittsburgh. That was the worst experience of my life. Greyhound was great as a teenager in the Navy, but as a 40+ year old man, they can keep it.

IMHO they ruined Greyhound after the 1989 strike. Before that, tickets were good for any departure within 30 days of purchase, and you could go partway, take a stopover, and then get a later bus to continue on. I used to break up long trips that way, only being on the bus at night to sleep. Really made it more tolerable....

Was a greyhound driver out of Seattle when that was being implemented. We were told to be strict about bags, seating, and on time departure. Nothing else really changed for drivers. We still had complete control over our bus and didn't have to take abuse. In fact during that time i did refuse a gew riders because they thought the rules didn't apply to them. Key thing when dealing with greyhound, flix, cantrail, ect. Being nice to the driver is highly recommended when you don't meet all the rules.

In traveling across the U.S. by bus on 4 separate occasions I met some great drivers and terminal staff , I also met and or saw and heard a great many with very bad attitudes torwards all passengers. Basically they were on a power trip. That being said, I also point out that on my journeys at least, most of the on bus problems came from fellow passengers and some of those drivers had the patience of saints . It's really a toss up , never know what you're going to get with each driver change or station layover . A few stations I would literally pay extra and go out of my way to avoid if there was another route that would let me bypass them , there were some drivers I wished to never see again but there were mostly drivers that I felt good about seeing take over the next leg because I knew they would run a tight bus and do it with professionalism.

Pro tip for greyhound. Don't call the customer service number to complain about a driver or station worker. It never gets to the station manager. Call the city manager of that station. Osc and customer service Don't really care. Let the city managers know who is good and who is horrible. If you ever are in wa going to van bc on flix hopefully you ride with me.

I know I am 4 months late to this conversation. I used to drive for greyhound, I know you probably don’t know this, but one of the biggest problems that greyhound will face with the new rule is that the correctional facility is the biggest user when they release inmates is greyhound. Those inmates do not have suitcases they use their mesh bags, and carry them on the buses or are put under the buses. I used to go from Houston Texas up to Huntsville Texas to pick up a bus full of inmates from the greyhound station there which is right down the road from one of the state prisons. Would take them down to Houston to either go farther on or back home in the Houston area. This inmate wouldn’t be able to afford to have suitcases.

Flixbus uses assigned seating in theory, but enforcement is patchy. I can confirm that in Poland, no one cares about what seat is printed on the ticket, but in Mediterranean countries this is strictly enforced.
@zahmmy1
@zahmmy1 Год назад
Used Greyhound for the first and last time last month. Request the handicap seat. Lie through your teeth and Carry a cane if you need to. This guarantees you will get a seat to yourself. What Greyhound does not tell you is that more than half of the other riders are inmates released from prison. Most people were nice but some were obnoxious. If you get stranded in Nashville because your bus driver has a beef with the new tighter schedules and wants to make a point about with longer breaks and you miss your connecting bus-just park yourself by the giant full length windows and enjoy the shit show. The drunk and homeless of the night are camped out on the sidewalk watching you back. Some are JACKING OFF on the windows and others are waiting like vultures to pick off the passengers going outside for a smoke. Non passengers are rounded up by the hour and asked to leave by personnel. But new ones arrive on a regular basis. I have to admire the ladies running this facility. They take absolutely no shit and are fearless. They also gave out info about local shelters and were proactive about protecting the women with children in the bus station. They were the best thing about the trip.

@@Polemic-2525 I was in Chicago at the Greyhound station and my third time taking the bus and be in Chicago I decided to go in before dark because if you have your ticket for the early in the morning they will let you stay there overnight but if you don’t they’ll kick you out which is rightly so but this is an about that, I was talking with his nice handicap overweight lady who was at the same station for three days and trying to get to Indianapolis Indiana and the buses that were supposed to have her leave on for some odd reason all of them had their handicap part not working and so when I was there talking with her we went into the customer service Area and asked if the next bus would have a working handicap door and The disabled lady was on the phone with her sister trying to get another bus maybe to go to Gary or someplace else so that her sister can pick her up and she missed the call that the lady did which only lasted not even 15 seconds and I called her out on it and so they kicked me out and I got robbed of $200 because I was standing outside the bus station and I couldn’t get back in until my bus left. And then they told her to get another ticket so she had to pay another fee to change the ticket because the ticket was outdated or whatever or they wouldn’t honor it or something. If you don’t cause any trouble even trying to help a stranger in need, then you’ll be fine and they’ll let you stay as long as your bus leaves at 6:30 in the morning or something but they’ll kick you out like I said if you don’t have a ticket because they’ll come around and check your check tickets and they won’t just check to see if you have one Delevan ask what time your bus is leaving and that way they can keep the inside of the station as safe as possible from gangs and prostitutes and hoodlums and stuff like that

I'm willing to give Flixbus a chance to do something with Greyhound. Assigned seating I can see both positive and negatives of it. People can reserve the seats they prefer easier, instead of taking on the chance that their preferred seating will be open if they didn't reserve. It'll take time for everyone to get use to those new rules and I can see issues arising. Flix Se is a German company, they provide not only bus, but also train travel in Europe as well. In many European countries, many modes of transportation rely on assigned seating, although it depends on the service you're riding. As for Greyhound itself, Greyhound has been through so many ups and downs I don't know where to start. All I can say is that I rode Greyhound in the late 1990s (my last time riding them) and they had problems then. The company in the 1980s before the strikes, the Trailways merger, and the eventual bankruptcy ruined that company in my personal opinion. But the 1980s was when the Hound was at its best.

I can see why they have reserve seating. Greyhound had a BAD habit of overbooking so if they didn't have room for a bus ticket you bought you are SOL and u got to wait for the next one which may take up to 24 hours or more. This was no overbooking can happen and you are not stranded at a terminal when you have to transfer buses.
@donalddodson7365
@donalddodson7365 Год назад
Kewan, I think you are right: it is the drivers who are going to be taking the heat for the Friz's ideas. Not sure I get the assigned seating for intercity buses. It will make it easier for people getting on to a bus that is continuing on a trip, like central California to the Mexican Border, taking on passengers at Bakersfield, Northridge, LA,, San Diego, etc.
@nmstranger
@nmstranger Год назад
I'm also thinking it prevents overbooking which the old company use to do. Rather have an assigned seat than be stranded in a bus transfer because they overbooked and be stranded at a bus terminal or worst waiting for the next one which may take 24 hours and hopefully that one wasn't overbooked as well

I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure they tried this in Canada, and ridership dropped. There were no overloads , so once a bus filled up, that was it. I used to drive for Greyhound in Canada in the 90s and it was an open-seat, first come first serve loading, and we added overload buses as needed. It was a flexible system that was run based on ridership needs. When the successor to Laidlaw Inc., took over, reserved seating system was implemented and that was the beginning of the end for Greyhound Canada, in my opinion. You need to operate a public bus company based on demands of the ridership. No corporation is going to sway the trends and needs of the travelling public.

Greyhound WAS! One of our main transportation companies in our country - Greyhound had no business selling the company to another country - Now a German company owns it and NOW, New Jersey and Philadelphia NO LONGER HAVE A BUS STATION!. People are standing on the streets to wait for their bus, NO PLACE TO SIT OR GO TO THE BATHROOM OR REST UNTIL YOUR BUS COMES - ... absolutely horrible! Transportation EVERYWHERE has gotten so messed up it's pathetic - People need to contact state and government officials and make huge complaints about this - this is horrible - I've never seen something so damn stupid!

This is *SO* going to tick people off. Heaven forbid a transportation organization set any restrictions or limitations on people. Now what's going to happen is someone's gonna cry "discrimination against the poor," they'll have some sort of congressional hearing, the company will get threatened with fines, and then eventually cave to popular demand. As a side note, I've always wondered how the pay structure works for companies like Greyhound, Bolt, and Flix (or whatever it's called). Working as a city bus driver, you're afforded pay and benefits that outdo most private organizations (heck, I make more annually as a bus driver than the office manager at my last job!). Anyway, just curious because I've thought being a coach driver sounds like it might be fun.

Well when you compare the $20 extra bag fee to the price of the ticket, it’s pretty expensive. Just looking now, a ticket from LA to Phoenix is $49.99. And a 2 month advance ticket from LA to NYC is $186.35. A lot of people riding the bus don’t have an extra $20 to spend, especially now that they have to buy a duffel bag, and still have to pay for their meals.

I’m a greyhound driver and I like the idea of assigned seating. The reason is because when all passengers have to get off the bus, they no longer need a reboarding pass (a little slip with a number on it so you can reclaim your seat before new passengers board). So in the event it’s time to reboard and a passenger is in the bathroom or something and they join with the new boarders, they won’t lose their seat because it’s already assigned to them. I’m a little relaxed on plastic bags, if I’m picking up a schedule and someone has plastic bags already on the bus, I’m not going to tell them sorry bud, get off my bus. Or if we’re at an express stop (a stop that isn’t a terminal or transit station) and a passenger has plastic bags I’ll still let them on. If we’re at a terminal though, the terminal staff shouldn’t let them in the line from the start. The biggest change for us is really the new phone they gave us, we have a completely different way to scan tickets, close out of stations when it’s time to depart, and use navigation. It’s fairly easy for someone who has some idea of tech to know how to use it, but an overwhelming amount of drivers still have no clue on how to really use the new phones, which could affect passengers. Nonetheless, I think once the dust settles and the system’s bugs are fixed, it’ll improve experiences for everyone, at least that’s what I hope 😅

Assigned seating on a long distance coaches is very typical in Australia and does not cause any issues. Luggage is normally 1 or 2 bags per passenger but with a 20kg limit per bag. As far as I know there is no restriction on the type of bag for Luggage other than it must be strong enough to handle and keep its contents safe. Some companies check this others don't. The vast majority follow the rules and respect the drivers in Australia. If they get trouble the police are called and the passenger removed. But generally tickets are all inclusive and buses do run close to time and your never left stranded part way through your journey.

As one who regularly takes the Greyhound to and from the yard/station terminal of the railroad I work at, assigned seating I feel is a much more comfortable change than the previous times I've taken it before where the busses have actually ended up being overcrowded or people actually having their belongings stolen from their seats because anybody could just come and pick a seat, willy nilly, regardless of if they saw someone's bag sitting there or not. Plus, if you're more private and reserved like myself, assigned seating gives you a higher chance that you won't have to sit next to anybody possibly creepy or potentially dangerous on the bus as well.
@bobsnelling8395
@bobsnelling8395 7 месяцев назад
Under the new dictatorial seating system, you could be assigned to sit next to someone creepy, and wouldn't have the option to move to a more comfortable location as you would under the former open seating system. This is true even if there were empty seats available.
