Couple of questions. I want some when available.How do you attach the jig?Do you supply the glow/red hootchie or do i get my own?Can you make them in 2 or 3 ounce ball jigs?
@CaptainZac

Hi @ralsgrandma thanks for the interest in my jigs! They are for sale here: captainzacalaska.com/fire-eye-glow-ball/. They come with the hootchie skirts attached. The smallest I currently sell is 8oz. To make a smaller version I'd need to work with my manufacturer and get another set of custom molds created. I am willing to do this if I hear more and more demand for a smaller version. I'll keep you posted if I launch a smaller version of this Fire Eye Glow Ball. Thanks again and tight lines! Captain Zac

Do you usually have a chum bag down when Halibut hunting as a standard practice? Thanks for sharing 👍!
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 2 года назад
Hi Charles thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed this halibut action! I use a chum bag sometimes when I'm at anchor but never when I'm backtrolling or drifting. If I'm backtrolling or drifting, I'm intentionally covering ground thus a chum bag to create a scent slick in one spot isn't useful. However, sometimes at anchor I will put a chum bag on the anchor line (near the bottom, on the chain) to cast out extra scent. Sometimes I'll use this approach when anchoring on a shallower flat/mount (80-150ft) with very deep water nearby to send a big scent slick down into deeper water (and attract the halibut up to the mound to feed). In some cases depending on the current, I'll put a chum bag down on the downrigger. Although this can create a risk of snagging your fishing lines, it does get the chum much closer to your baits in the water (presumably increasing the likelihood that the chum will attract a fish to your bait). Does this make sense? Tight lines! Captain Zac

Hey captain Zac, I reinlisted in the army to go to Alaska for me next duty station and arrived here the 10th. The Wife and I wanted to learn how to fish and find good fishing poles for Alaska. We would appreciate any help on leaning the rules and how to fish up here! Awesome video can't wait to see the next one. P.S. we are stationed at JBER.

Hey Call me Bo2 thanks for stopping by and I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying my videos! CONGRATS on the upcoming move the Anchorage - how cool! The most easily accessible fishing in that area will be fishing in lakes and rivers for trout and salmon. Check out this article which shows a lot of great spots right near Anchorage. www.fishalaskamagazine.com/fish-anchorage-area-alaska/ Also, I'd suggest stopping by Cabelas (there is one right in Anchorage) and chatting with them about the best gear/tackle for the local waters. I suspect you'll want a medium to heavy spinning rod for salmon and maybe a lighter spinning rod for trout fishing in lakes. Not sure if you are into fly fishing but you'll find opportunities to fly fish also if interested. Ship Creek runs right through Anchorage and you get nice runs of king salmon and coho (silver) salmon every year! That could be an easy starting point to get your line wet and chat up some locals for more intel. Welcome to Alaska and tight lines my friend - thanks for your service! Captain Zac

Hi Eric thanks for stopping by and glad you enjoyed this video! Yes indeed that sounds like a great approach - I know big hallies love feasting on baits that size so I'm not surprised you've had good luck using kelp greenling for halibut bait! Good luck this season and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Hey Capt, The Glow Ball looks promising for halibut. The treble hook allows you more hook area to attach bait(s). Can easily see having herring in one hook gap, salmon strip in another, and squid strip in the third one. How could a Hali pass that up? :) Would be nice to see the jig work on your underwater camera. I bet the articulated action with the swing hook is pretty attractive to the predators down there.
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 2 года назад
Hi Geoff thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you enjoyed this video! You nailed it - the ability to have multiple different baits fluttering behind that treble is a big advantage. I'll definitely aim to grab some underwater footage of the Fire Eye Glow Ball in action this year! All the best and tight lines my friend! Captain Zac

Thanks for the video capt! I can see some great potential for those glow balls. Have to change them up a bit. Treble hooks prohibited in Oregon for halibut. Think ID like some just the balls to experiment with.

Hi John thanks for stopping by and I appreciate the feedback! Wow - I didn't realize that trebles are prohibited in OR for halibut. I will consider launching a J-hook model as well. If you do want just the balls feel free to drop me a line and we can work something out. captainzacalaska@gmail.com Thanks and tight lines! Captain Zac

Try adding a assist hook to the other loop and where the tremble hook is connect it to your line who knows that might help prevent you from catching them small unwanted rock fish

@@CaptainZac No not yet, I fished all of March for King's before they closed it. Didn't catch anything, so got the boat out of the water and am now putting a new heater in. Just waiting for some more parts to show up. Be back in the water soon to test out the the new jigs.

Sorry to hear the kings didn't cooperate more but still great to be out there. I wasn't able to make it out for the early King season but am totally ready to get after the halibut once the boat is in the water. Best of luck with the new jigs - I'd love to hear how they work for you! Thanks again and tight lines!

It's a Halibut, not a chicken. Chicken's don't swim in the ocean.
@CaptainZac
@CaptainZac 2 года назад
Hi Bradley thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed this video! Haha in this video I was using the term "chicken" to describe a small halibut. In Alaska, we refer to these little halibut as "chickens"... sometimes going as far as calling a spot a "chicken factory" if it is known for large numbers of smaller fish!
