Have you ever wondered what life was like in Pompeii, the ancient Roman city that was buried by a volcanic eruption in 79 AD? In this video, we will take you on a journey through the new discoveries at Pompeii’s Regio IX, a central area of the city that had not been fully explored before. You will see the houses, shops, and public buildings that reveal the secrets of the daily life and culture of Pompeii. You will also see the bodies of the victims, preserved by the ash that hardened around them, and the frescoes that depict scenes from mythology and cuisine. You will learn how archaeologists use tools and techniques to study and analyze the findings, and how they help us understand the history and science of Pompeii. Pompeii is a fascinating place to visit, and a valuable source of information for archaeologists, historians, and scientists. If you want to see more videos like this, please subscribe to our channel, and hit the bell icon to get notified of our latest uploads. Thank you for watching, and see you next time.

I visited Pompeii in 1968 and was in awe of the beauty, frescos and mosaics, discovered under the ash and rubble. The terror of the residents when the volcano erupted was felt as we walked through the ruins discovered at that time. So much more has been brought to light since.

I saw the Pompeii exhibit in the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto in 2015. It was fantastic. The paintings, jewellery, ironwork, huge lighting fixtures, and the casts of the dead took your breath away. The cast of the dog with a chain around its neck was so intricate and beautiful but so terrifying to think about.

I remember reading an account from one of the locals who escaped. Apparently, there was lots of rumbling from the volcano a few days prior. He said, he was telling everyone to get out. Lucky for him, he did. I can't even imagine returning to see everything buried under smoldering rock. Just devastating.

We really don't give ancient peoples the credit they deserve for building such beautiful things. Too many people really believe that aliens or time travelers must have helped them. Sites like this really bring their cultures and ingenuity to life.

There is still nothing but supposition as to how the Kobekli Tepe carvings were done, as they can not be replicated with today's technology. The invading European christian terrorists labeled Native Americans 'savages' and the Native Australians, who have THE oldest Societal culture on the planet, were corralled as livestock as their body parts were harvested into the 20th Century.

The comment just above yours proves my point. While he does not explicitly state that it was aliens, he is clearly trying to undermine the idea that the people of Pompeii had the ability to build their city because WE don’t understand how they did a thing.

Not a pizza but a 'mensa' (lit = 'table'). A mensa was a circular flatbread used as a plate upon which food was placed. Once the food was consumed the 'plate' could be eaten too. If you look carefully at the fresco you can see the mensa has a rim. This was to prevent wet foods from spilling over the edge. The tradition of the mensa persisted into the middle ages when a 'trencher' of bread was used for precisely the same purpose.

Very informative. The different areas following the scene in the video at 05:49, showing the directional legend with North up, and roman letters suggesting the "regio's" from there the confusion starts. Regio 1 according to the narrator was in the North Western corner, while the map shows one (Roman I) in the South East according to the map with direction legend.

Thank you for posting. I am Italian-born who has lived abroad all my life. I went to Pompei, as a tourist in 2008 and I was negatively impressed by the lack of appreciation by the locals of the tremendous anthropological treasure to which they are custodians. The workers of all ranks that I witnessed there at the time were completely nonchalant about the actual discoveries, not to speak of the very ill kept grounds of the entire archaeological site as well as the carefree treatment of the tourists themselves. What is sad is that with the millions of unemployed Italians, the government will not spend the necessary energy and money to make Pompei a real treasure for the whole world. Needless to say, the Italian Governments, all of them, right and left, will have no problems investing in the war in Ukraine or feed, house and care for the hundreds of thousands of illegal migration that crosses the Mediterranean Pond. Uggghhhh!

Pinecones? Not even remotely. When have you seen pinecones with ovate leaves growing out of the ends? If it wasn't a pineapple it was some other fruit. Could be a Durian or a relative. They are native to Asia and the leaves are ovate. The scene looks like a real-life painting. Whatever fruit it is, that's roughly what it actually looked like. The shelf life for undamaged, unripe durian is up to three weeks. There were gardens in Persia at the time that could grow it. Keep in mind that just because the fruit grows wild in one region doesn't mean some rich king or aristocrat didn't cultivate it elsewhere. Zanzibar grows it as well for example.

So now we finally know when and where the pizza tradition came into being. (The ancestral homelands of my paternal and maternal grandparents were located not far from that area.) As for Regio-I to Regio-IX, each Regio is pronounced " `Reh'-gi-o" (It.) or " `Reh'-ghi-o" (L.), and certainly not as if it were an English word ("Ree-gi-o" ?)

But "regio" is an English word, used in astronomy, and the narrator -- speaking in English -- pronounced it correctly. There are hundreds of Latin words that have been naturalized as English, with anglicized pronunciations. A writer can make the decision to step outside the language he's writing in for picturesqueness or some other effect, but he's not required to. (I'm thinking of all the food writers, writing/speaking in English, who ignore "Parmesan" in favor of "parmigiano" or even "parmi[zh]an.' ")

An excellent Bible scholar named Dave Breese once said that he believed it was possible that God passed judgment on Pompeii and Herculaneum because of the sins there. Day of Discovery also did a program on the Vesuvius disaster, which included speculation that the cities were used as resorts and had a lot of evidence of customs of immorality in the ruins, such as numerous brothels and phallic cult activities.

Every time the narrator states the size of each Regio, he contradicts his own graphic.

It was the directions that were confused, not the size.

My partner and myself went but it would be nice to have all day to roam about the whole of Pompey as going with a tour you only see a bit and I mean a tiny bit

People never seem to learn from history. Even today there are numerous communities around the world where people live dangerously close to volcanos. 🌋

❤❤ Great, thanks! ❤❤❤ But where is that map from? The cartographers forgot the first "rule" that North always points up, not South. 😂

It's really pine apples on the fresco , don't hide the possibility of travelling west (and come back) in the past ( phenicians navigators for example).✋😀

The Citron (Citrus) depict on the fresco. It’s strange that in this image the “scientists” saw a pineapple. Even a typical citrus leaf is drawn next to the fruit.

I find Italy to be a wonderful place to visit. I like the way they cherish children and don't treat them as a nuisance in cafes and restaurants.

Why would you assume an oven that had been in use for some time prior to the eruption with no apparent problem suddenly cause a house fire, when pyroclastic flows can easily exceed the combustion temperature of many ordinary household objects?
@PhilJonesIII
@PhilJonesIII 5 месяцев назад
I wondered that. Superheated and virtually starved of oxygen, complete combustion would have been prevented.

It’s a bit silly to suggest that some furniture burnt in the house part of a bakery was due to the oven working at the time of the eruption 😂. A volcano was erupting! With unbelievable heat, and hot pyroclastic material raining down at speed.
@user-sc9lb4vp5u
@user-sc9lb4vp5u Месяц назад
What I got from this was that they saw furniture burnt by the volcano and that the oven was still in use at the time of the eruption.

Just a little correction, it is widely accepted that the eruption took place the end of October and not in August.

How could any DNA survive after such high temperatures of the volcanic ash ??

Actually, most inhabitants had fled the city by the time the pyroclastic flow arrived.
