New INSIDIOUS ROOTS deck is EXPLOSIVE! (MKM STANDARD)

INSIDIOUS ROOTS makes ENDLESS GROWING PLANT TOKENS when a creature leaves your graveyard. And Willow Geist (a card that's existed) grows when any card leaves your graveyard. So we have added ALL THE CREATURE CARDS that can be played from your graveyard (exiling themselves), including unearth bangers like Ashnod's Harvester (which double triggers Insidious Roots and Willow Geist from unearth) and new BANGERs like Rubblebelt Maverick, which surveils and then exiles itself from the graveyard for just one-mana to add a counter (triggering our BANGERS again) and cards like Deathbonnet Sprout which mills and exiles creatures as well! The NEW Snarling Gorehound keeps your graveyard full, while being a menace threat of its own. YOU WILL BE SHOCKED HOW THIS DECK CAN POP OFF OUT OF NOWHERE FOR THE WIN! :)

I just built this deck with some slight modifications and when it pops off it’s freaking hilarious. And IMO Tyver is a MUST in this deck (at least one of). Once you get the machine of Insidious Roots, a couple Gorehounds, and Tyver you can almost go nonstop. Throw cards in the graveyard with the hound and then tap the recently summoned roots mana with Tyver to exile more creatures from the graveyard, more roots etc.

There is a new insidious roots combo since OTJ came out. Tomb Trawler + Roots + Tyvar + Snarling Gorehound. I know you like crazy combos. I have been having fun with a deck I built around this. There´s infinite mana and infinite tokens combo in it given right conditions. I would like to see you make a deck around it, to see what would be different from mine.

You have to choose the target as the ability goes on the stack, so there’s no way to stack the effects the way you want

My friend asked me about this card when it previewed and I compared it to waste not. You really gotta see 🙈 how strong the deck is without roots/waste not because you aren't always going to jam it on 2. If the deck is still solid you are good.

Yeah, it’s a strong one! With Willow Geist as another payoff card and some fast aggro creatures, it stands up even if you miss the Roots in my opinion!

Thanks!!! Yeah, maybe instead of Kirin, although the 1/1 creature from Kirin triggers surveil on our dog and is a token for mana, which is nice! We need more cards slots! :)

Diabolic intent find what’s missing among Tyvar, roots or hounds, also sacrifices something you wanted in your grave anyway to kickstart the reaction. I think willow geist and sprout are the cards that are not very convincing so far

Last game was very interesting. At 41:27 I wondered if autotapper tapping your mana dork to save 1 life from the painland would matter... then I got to 46:00, and guess what?

Try aftermath analyst, dreamthief and scrapgorger alongside tyvar instead of cottontail, simulacrum and ichor, much more consistent triggers on willow and roots. much lower curve also. Failing that Ive had a lot of success with soul cauldron, scornblade and aftermath. Both have absurdly fast triggers and can win without roots. Soul cauldron also benefits from being able to play both enchantment hate with cankerbloom and self sac for willow if you get in a bind. Both canker and scorn also let you self sac the dudes you want in GY or sac to draw to make wipes less impactful. Good start but this deck has so much more potential than people think.

Yeah Tyvar is cool since the plants can be tapped for mana first turn. Might be something there too (probably with a ramp element). But in this one I wanted a very high creature density to try to get more consistent triggers! :)

I'm really impressed by the performance of the deck, as I hoped so much that insidious root ids good. However, I feel a bit uncomftable with the lack of removal in the deck. Do you think the deck will still have a high enough creature density after making room for removal?

Thanks!!! There is the new -4/-4 flash black enchantment that drains when a creature leaves a graveyard (so goes with same synergy). I didn’t include due to mana cost (4 mana), but worth a try! Also, if you want normal removal, make it “Bitter Triumph” so you can discard a creature like Ashnod’s for extra value (since we want those in graveyard). Finally, you could try adding Stalactite Stalker (which grows if you descend, which we always do) AND can be sacrificed to be REMOVAL (also putting it [a creature] in the graveyard)! I almost added him in this version.

Kind of crazy the add 1 mana of any color isnt even factored in. My biggest timmy card is sigardas summons which you could pay the white and pump all creautes and add flying. I was missing some wildcards and added armored scrapgorger to at least get some exile effects. Fun deck man

For sure - I wanted to make this variant first (I’m an aggro boy at heart haha). And it felt strong!!! But far from the last Insidious Roots deck I’ll make (next one will have Tyvar and will focus more on ramp element for sure)!

That's pretty impressive, and on a nice budget, too. It doesn't look like the deck needed it in these matches, but did you consider Tenacious Underdog? You can potentially play it from the graveyard multiple times. It could be really valuable in a grindy game with multiple sweepers.

Would a card like Not Dead Afterall or Fungal Fortitude trigger the Insidious Roots? Could be pretty good on Rubblebelt Maverick for more mill or Simian Simulacrum.

Yes they would (to my understanding). I was trying to add Fungal Fortitude but found it lowered my creature density too much. Since we want to maximize chances when we mill/surveil we put a creature in graveyard we can play from graveyard. But probably another build around to be made with the cards you note! :)

@@MythicMichaelOhh that's right. In general, spells and abilities check for legality of their targets twice; once when you put them on the stack, and again when they resolve. Simulacrum had to target itself because it was your only creature (thus the only legal target) when its ETB trigger went on the stack.

I'm not sure about Simian Simulacrum. 3 mana + 4 to unearth is just a ton to spend, for 3 manas I think Tyvar would work much better and feed the engine more consistently.

It’s possible! My thought is we need more creatures for Deathbloom Sprout, and that I want to be an aggro deck even if we miss Insidious Roots, with Ashnod’s the 3/1 and Simian 4/3 we can blast in for a lot of damage! And both come back from a mill (along with most creatures in the deck), so no need for Tyvar to bring them back (they do it themselves). The main deck we lose to is a mono red or aggro deck, and Tyvar does not help much that matchup, when Simian can hold its own on blocks! Could be wrong, but that’s my first thought/reasoning for the choice :).

Yeah I’m gonna try to craft the deck as is but add one Ozolith and Tarrian’s Journal. Journal also flips and allow you to play creatures from the graveyard, keeping with the theme/synergies

I crafted your Rakdos sacrifice deck and Journal is great in it. Hope you revisit that deck or something similar, and of course we’re all expecting a Menace deck, although I think you might have mistakenly thought suspect grants haste?

I also like the new card Aftermath Analyst as the one-of instead of Placid Rottentail. it's a nice way to immediately get all your lands back from the graveyard, and sneakily make Willow Geist a HOUSE.

Worth testing for sure! I really like Simian so we can play Aggro if we do not hit our Insidious, but Tyvar does feel like it’s made for the deck! :). My guess is Tyvwr may be a good 2 of and we remove the Fungus Rabbit and one of the smaller creatures. We shall see though!
