Prof. Hans Rosling died on February 17, 2017. Way too early. He had a genuine and unique way of presenting "boring" statistics in a way anybody can understand. Somewhat criticized for being _too positive_ he continued to show that the overall situation for many persons have become better. But with this presentation he showed that it came with a cost. A cost that our children will have to pay for, and we don't know whether there will be any grandchildren if this world order continues as it does today.

I mean, everyone dies eventually, and I think he lived his life as fully/positively as he could. It's super sad that he's gone, but the best thing to do is carry on his message and livelihood into your own life. It's thanks to people like Hans that the world is more educated and prosperous than it's ever been, so let's keep that trend going! Also worth noting that he didn't die from anything related to sword swallowing, it was pancreatic cancer.

The reference of GDP per capita is misleading because this reveals nothing about the concentration of ownership of assets (i.e., land and capital goods and finance reserves) and income. A main reason for the decline in health and life expectancy in the United States is not difficult to comprehend. Income and wealth are increasingly concentrated, leaving a higher and higher portion of the population left with a subsistence level existence. This is not a result of some natural law but the fact that the U.S. system of law and taxation significantly benefits a "rent-seeking" minority over those who produce goods and provide needed services. The U.S. government keeps no statistics on the ownership of land. Roughly half of the land area is held by government at all levels. According to the best estimates of economists (e.g., Mason Gaffney, Fred Foldvary, Nicholas Tideman) who have studied land markets and ownership, over 95% of the LAND VALUE in the U.S. is held by fewer than 5% of the population, plus foreign nationals and corporate interests. For two-thirds of U.S. households the amount of land owned is that beneath a primary residence. If the property is within a high rise condominium their proportion of land ownership is nominal. And, of course, one-third of all households own no land at all. Their primary asset is likely to be an automobile. The connections are indisputable for anyone willing to think about our history and the ongoing movement of people from the land by force of one form or another. The solution is one in recent years put forward by former World Bank economist Joseph Stiglitz: change the way government raises revenue from the taxation of earned income, of capital goods and commerce and impose an annual tax on the potential rental value of land and land-like assets (e.g., the broadcast spectrum). This is the only real path to ending poverty in any country.

Developing countries are rising in the health and quality of live areas while L.E.D.Cs are doing well when compared to where they are coming from. Your point is relevant. In the US, any child born alive is counted at a live birth. In Many European countries, Sweden included, if a child is born weighing less than 500 grams, it is not counted as a live birth. Newborns less than 500 grams are more likely to die. So comparisons are not always apples to apples.

See, you're getting circular here. If we'd measure correctly, then it could prove your point, while you don't want to measure correctly. There are tons of tools to measure poverty, like variability, or a simple graph with x = personal property and y = number of people who own that amount of wealth. It would be easy for the jerk in the vid to use one of these logical, simple and obvious benchmarks, but then of course his laughable propaganda would be exposed as the joke that it is.
@trakkaton
@trakkaton 15 лет назад
Arbitrary? Did you really write "arbitrary"? So the fact that more and more people live with less than a d0llar per day is not a sign of increasing poverty and inequality, but of the DECREASING purchasing power of the d0llar in the same time span? If you can't remember what we're debating, then read it. GDP/capita, life expectancy, infant mortality isn't able to measure poverty.
@trakkaton
@trakkaton 15 лет назад
I am not creating an artificial example, but you are claiming that all societies with inequality concerning the distribution of wealth are pyramidal. Just compare the two Apartheid regimes of Israel and South Africa: The percentage of people that is oppressed and impoverished due to racistic criteria is quite different. In South Africa, a small minority oppressed a vast majority (and some say, still does). In Israel, a majority oppresses a minority.
@trakkaton
@trakkaton 15 лет назад
You pretty much debunked yourself. Mean and Median give no information about the distribution of wealth, or inequality, and therefore poverty (and stinkin richness). People can be very poor and still live long lives, especially when the infant mortality is low, which is the main factor of live expectancy. It says something about the availability of vaccines, about the health system, about culture, etc., but that does in no way equal poverty.
@trakkaton
@trakkaton 15 лет назад
"Anyway, what do you suggest using?" - "Indicators of poverty: How many people have to live with one d0llar a day (without the inflation tax). Numbers are rising. But the superrich own 110 000 000 000 000 , 00 $. Bottom line: Watch the rise of poverty." Bottom-line: It would really really really help if you would start to learn to read - and think.
@trakkaton
@trakkaton 15 лет назад
So if 50% of the population earns 9900 $ a month, and 50% of the population earns 100 $ a month, how do mean and median differ from a society where 100% earns 4500$ a month? And what is the difference between mean and median in that case? Waiting....waiting...

i think europeans and americans are way too creative to just step off the throne. sure, the future of agriculture, industry, and simple services is in the BRIC and other fast develpoers, but europe, america, and japan always have the advantage of high education levels, political liberty, and free information. i think all of this will make the previously mentioned countries centers of media, culture, social studies, and really high technology.
@shiftyjake
@shiftyjake 15 лет назад
to arliben: I don't think he's saying there's a causal relationship between life expectancy and family size. There is a correlation that we can see just by looking at the graphed data, and that's all he's saying. He chose those two factors because they are often assumed to be some of the biggest differences between 1st and 3rd world countries. "Manipulation of data" is interpretation. It's only bad when the manipulation is intended to decieve, which isn't happening here.
@Paulginz
@Paulginz 15 лет назад
Variability in itself doesn't measure poverty. If you have 100 people earning 5$, there's more poverty but less variability than if you have 99 peaople earning 6$ and one earning 1000000$. Onse again, a graph can't be used in his presentation. He needs a single number. Yes, there are tons of better tols to measure poverty than life expectancy. However, none of them is as simple and transparent as life expectancy.
@Paulginz
@Paulginz 15 лет назад
Yes, one dollar a day is arbitrary. (well, it was actually chosen after a lot of research, but that's besides the point). Why not use 2$ a day? I didn't say anything about the decreasing or increasing purchasing power of the dollar w.r.t. time. Just that it changes between countries. I insist that life expectancy is a better indicator. If the government gives you free food, housing and healthcare but no cash benefits, you're better off than living on 1$ a day.
@Paulginz
@Paulginz 15 лет назад
The choice of 50/50 is artificial. It's also unstable: the income of a single person can dramatically alter the median. Racism in this case has a distorting effect on wealth distribution. But it's certainly not the only means to economic oppression. If you think that there are no poor jewish israelis you're wrong. There's still a pyramidal structure that roughly follows a power law distribution.
@Paulginz
@Paulginz 15 лет назад
You're creating an artificial example where mean and median match. If one more person had 100$ a month, then the median would be 100$ a month. (Oh and btw, the mean and median would be the same if everyone had 5000$ a month, not 4500). In REAL LIFE, wealth distribution roughly follows a power law. The median gives a very good estimate of the wealth of "normal" people, because it isn't biased by the presence of a few super-rich people. Obviously, having more than one quantile would be better.
@Paulginz
@Paulginz 15 лет назад
Anyway, things depend a lot on your definition of wealth. IMHO, a person living in a communist country who has access to clean water, housing, infrastructure for education and transport etc, but has no private property is wealthyer than someone with a wad of 1$ bills dying of cholera in a slum because there's no sewers. It makes much more sense to measure inequality in quality of life than in money terms. Anyway, what do you suggest using? Standard deviation of wealth? Kurtosis?

I don't know if I like you hypothesis as well as the generally accepted THEORY (definition: a scientifically accepted model for explaining the relation of events in a manner that can predict other events, and which can be proven false in light of new, conflicting data.) however, it is an interesting direction of thought. Also, I will go read anything you recommend in the spirit of finding the truth... or even altering my perception of it. And, Galileo would not have been imprisoned by me, I am not THE Pope, it's a nickname... because I've made so many atheist girls scream, "Oh, God, oh, God, I'm coming!" Only kidding.

Oh, but I do know quite a bit about science. But let's assme I know nothing... all I have to do is consult the most widely-supported conclusion... which would be, "survey says...", global warming is caused by excess CO2. I don't have to know anything about science to understadn that those who do know something have a better theory than those who stand to gain from denying the existence of such a phenomena.

Taxes are done with the same acts as the common criminal extracts money. I don't have a choice if I don't want violent men with guns comming to my house. The same choice as the mafia leaves me with. That doesn't have any relevance to human behaviour when it comes to the human mindset. It only means the bureaucrats will have almost no limits of how much money they can extract.

For Alan: The ocean does not emit carbon dioxide; carbon dioxide is released from the process of oxidation inside animals or other single-celled organisms. Thus, if you are calling the oceans and their contents "the ocean" then you are de facto admitting that human beings are also not just in heir environment but a part of it as well.
