In this video we unbox and fit the Deployable Side Roof Ladder to our project Land Rover Defender 2020. The part number for this our VPLER0172 / VPLER0189. Genuine fitting Instructions can be found at :- accessories-instructions.landr...
Great video. I've had the ladder fitted for a few months. Thoughts: 1) No rattle to report (not exposed it to extensive corrugations) 2) No wind noise to report (over and above that which is already present from the roof rack) 3) It interferes with your rear view in the wing mirrors - like the lunchbox. An inevitable consequence of hanging anything on the side. 4) It makes getting onto the roof considerably easier and consequently makes the roof rack practical (I can't understand how people have roof racks without a ladder as you'd only be able to lash things down from the side) 5) it looks AWESOME. Love the fact that it folds away, love the integrated look and it completes the car.
Hi Alan.. yes for sure it look great and is very useful overall we were impressed. What about paintwork protection ? did you decide to do anything here ? let me know if you have any ideas.... we could design one for you to try.
Have you had any issues with water collecting behind the trim piece? The 19mm holes leave enough space around the cylinder spacer for water to get in. Hoping it'll just drain out through the bottom of the trim piece.
I was thinking about paint protection. I’m sure climbing up and down with boots I would hit the painted panel. Did you put something together for this?
So grateful for these videos -- Defender 2020 owner in the US who is interested in these mods here. Not enough documentation out there, so appreciate you putting these up. Loved the eye hook/ recovery point install video also. Please keep it up!
Happy to help you guys in the US as I am aware there is less support for you in the US generally .. we have a lot of customers from the US and we appreciate your business.... I just need to try and get more stock of the hooks !
i dont mean to be so offtopic but does any of you know a trick to get back into an instagram account?? I was stupid lost the account password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me!
Love these videos, and appreciate you making them. This video, for example, will probably save me $1000 Canadian, as there's no way I'll be buying the ladder option after seeing the details on it.
I've had the ladder fitted now for a couple of months. No rattle. You have to really shake it to dislodge the ladder when stowed. Would be interesting to see how it fares over washboard roads. 😬
You could make a black and clear wrap panel in the shape of a ladder to match the ladder above to protect the rear wing from your boots, you can have that idea for free 😉😉 thanks for another great video, cheers
Excellent - you managed to get the ladder and fit it! I have cheated and got my local dealer in Norwich to fit it - along with the roof rack and urban pack - The urban pack was the only way I could get the rear wheel cover. I think of all the accessories the ladder is the coolest so far! Thanks for the video - keep them coming chaps.
Hi - One question do you do you have the side gear carrier too? do you have the same key for the ladder and the side gear carrier if you buy as a "pack" ?
I didnt go much on the New Defender when it was launched , BUT after watching these videos of "The Stig " being bombarded with lots of Goodies ,and Simons Great Personality . && brought a few little bits for my old Defender too . . Hoping someday to see these new Door Cards . Which look Great .BUT that will be later . But Yes , these videos are Great viewing Love the new 110 .
Great video I watched it twice before installing my wife’s. I drilled very small pilot holes and put a piece of masking tape over the bolt holes. I then installed the trim and pushed the drill bit through. The resulting hole was at the very bottom of the bolt holes. I moved up as much was I could without getting into the edge of the molding. Even doing that when I finished the install the spacer was at the very top of the hole with about a 3/16 gap below. Long and short of it is that the factory holes are too high. People should be warned.
I think if I'd paid 60k + having a top notch accessory would be expected. The simple things you have highlighted have been missed by design engineers paid a fortune to cover😮 great vid again chaps
Thanks again for a great video. I do wonder if that top trim piece dampens the ladder rattle a bit. Also for wind effect while driving if there was room in design it seems the lock would be better located on forward side of ladder
Really good video. Informative, entertaining with both good technical detail and good humour. Really like the way that you explore the install showing different thoughts along the way, solving for usual uncertainties. Considering getting the roof rack and ladder for mine as a consequence. Just need to figure out if the items are yet available in the US, and also check the clearance on the roof rack to the garage door (new vehicle height). Thanks.
Don't ever let Tyler go anywhere near a glass table with a hammer again. Very informative entertaining videos; not that I'll ever be able to afford one of these vehicles.
just been watching this and noticed it has the same sort of lock for the ladder as have on the side panels and tool box on my excavtor I've had to put thread lock on them to keep the nut's tight as they keep coming loose.
I fitted my ladder yesterday and now, Land Rover provide a template with the holes marked to stick over the trim, which helps when it comes to drilling.
Very interesting. I'm disappointed in the locking mechanisms (or lack thereof), but the ladder itself seems fairly decent. I had heard some feedback that it's too high up to be useful, but that doesn't seem to be the case. It seems to be lower than the top of the back tire, which would be the normal alternative to step up and access the roof. I wonder if there is a way to manufacture some enhancements to the ladder? Thoughts - additional step or two down that could be "hooked" on the bottom for people with mobility issues (like myself); vinyl "kick plate" like you suggested in the vid... other than the wobbly latching when it's closed, it seems sweet. Hopefully that wobbly-ness doesn't create a racket when you're driving. Let us know if it does!
Great video Simon, I like how the ladder fits neatly and tight against the body work and quite rightly doesn’t obscure the wing mirrors. Bit concerned with loose in the rack . Regards mark
Your videos have helped me a ton. One question. You mentioned that your step/foot clearance was limited between the body and ladder. How is it with the extended wheel flares? Seems like it might even touch, no? I’d also imagine it makes climbing the later harder. Thoughts?
Checker plate to protect the paintwork, upgrade the locking mechanism, the plastic trim looks cheap and if you ever need to replace it your probably have to buy a complete ladder kit, I had a problem with dealer fitted sidesteps on a Td5 110 plastic end caps fell off after a few months could not get spare endcaps dealer problem he had to take endcaps of a new step to fit to mine .
I have never felt the need to fit a ladder to my past three Defenders (currently a 90 TD5). At my age getting into the driving seat is an accomplishment (even with side steps), the thought of going onto the roof terrifies me 😱.
I reckon the the smaller M10 washers should be between the tube and the car's body, inside the big hole you drilled in the trim, to spread the load a bit. Otherwise a big heavy bloke will likely punch the tube into the body, or dent it, with use.
Another great video - thanks. I am a little worried that the catch is only on one side - does it rattle while driving? Also - how much noisier is the wind noise while driving with the latter sticking out?
Just an idea for an experiment. When using threaded holes in bodywork, that go into voids, how about trying PTFE tape on the bolt threads to prevent water ingress?
Good point - one thing i forgot to mention... as that Land Rover to their credit did think of this and have pre applied some pink sealant / thread lock to the M10 bolts.
Regarding - the Lunchbox and steps Simon , The Military "WOLF " had the spare wheel on the side of the vehicle ,It was found that the drivers were driving OFF Road around by trees ect ,and the branches were "Ripping the Spare " off the side of the vehicle doing damage to the side of the Rover in doing so . . Could this be a problem by bolting things on the side of the Great looking 110 s -Just a thought ?
I was just discussing this today... the holes make good pens holders... see tomorrows video... we took the ladder of just temporarily to do some development work...
I just installed the ladder on my 110. Your video made it much easier! I was wondering if you've had any issues with water collecting behind the trim piece? The 19mm holes leave enough space around the cylinder spacer for water to get in. Hoping it'll just drain out through the bottom of the trim piece.
Hi Philip - no problems on mine but the ladder has been on and off the car.. the water should drain out OK and the bolts supplied had sealer around them if i remember correctly so should be waterproof.
@@L663 Thanks! I was debating putting some silicone on the outside of the trim where the bolt goes through to create a seal, but not sure if it's worth it. Will see how it goes!
I have the ladder fitted. So people asking about noises: 1. On smooth surfaces the wind noise will not make a difference if you have a roof rack fitted 2. On corrugated surfaces you can’t hear it as road (gravel) noise dampens out anything else (you don’t hear rattles from the ladder inside the car)
Great video, Simon. 👍🏻 I've been wondering whether to get the ladder for my 110. LR's accessories website mentions it can fit either side (I think I'd prefer it on the RH side) but price it at £708. Ouch. Maybe that includes dealer fitting.
The retail is £500 + Vat so that is £600 Some dealers have them on ebay for this price ( search Defender Deployable Ladder ) I may sell them when i design the side graphic / anti loss washers etc so it is a full kit.
What trim level did you get? I ordered the 4 cylinders and opted for 20-inch rims, but I wanted to buy a second set of wheels with the 18-inch steels... would it fit with the brakes?
Yes I said that when they fitted the lunch box, you think for the price it would be included because if you change your mind or change the car your going to have holes showing
@@dwrowley I think those side trim pieces are very expensive to purchase separately around £50 or so if I remember from a previous video. The other problem would be the colour, you'd have to have multiple part numbers for different colour combinations.
I can see the problem here is that this part is body colour... so they would need to offer them all colours...or it could be gloss black to match the window... but that might upset Gerry as there would not be straight bodyline !
Nice job Simon I watch the Land Rover Defender advert tonight and the one they had with the roof tent on top had the ladder on the left-hand side of the vehicle . Ralph Cooling Ps is there a bottle opener attached to the panel that you rivet on above the lights i see in the video?
Oh yeah i remember now sorry about that. It would have been interesting if you weighed the vehicle before you start putting all these Extras on it and then see how much it weighs afterwards but its looking nice any way Simon 👍 Ralph
Thanks, great video. I just had the dealer install mine on a new 110 but I'm getting a whistle noise from wind at speeds great than 40 mph. Have you experienced the same? Any ideas how to combat the wind whistle noise?
I am Having this problem currently, very annoying. I want to remove it and reinstall it but I don’t want to break my finishing cover, as happened here. Did you have any luck correcting the whistle?
@@mannkeitha yes I did, it turns out there was a defect from the factory. The rectangular panel located on the outside of the door (second row seating door) requires connectors to hold the panel down which were not installed in mine. I was able to identify the issue by opening my doors on both sides of the car and gently lift it up on that panel. Then I noticed one side of the car was different from the other in that one side near the ladder lifted up and away from the body of the car. This was just enough to create a very annoying whistle noise. I took it back to the dealer and they confirmed that this was the issue. The part is on back order for 3 months, so as a temporary fix they installed silicone underneath that panel to hold it down and the whistling went away. Major bummer. Especially because the dealership could not even identify the issue. Originally they told me that the noise is common, so I test drove one at another dealership to confirm that the whistling wasn't normal. Now I'm waiting for the new part to be delivered and installed, hopefully I'll have no more issues.
One more thing, I was able to remove the cover and the ladder in its entirety, but you need to be very careful. There are clips that need to be pushed with a flathead screwdriver to disengage. The plastic connectors are very weak and easily broken. I took my time and studied what the part looked like online before attempting the removal. It's possible, but if you pull or push too hard in the wrong direction the plastic covering will likely crack or connectors snap off.
This is excellent information! Thank you. I will take a look at my pane this morning. So it is the increased size pressure from the ladder that is lifting the panel and causing the whistling, then? I would assume so as I do not hear it without the ladder.
@@chaseoliphant1980 I just checked my panel and the while thing is loose and unsecured at the rear. Amazing! I spent so much time looking at the ladder I would not have checked this panel had you not mentioned it. I will get it to the dealer to order the replacement.
Another great vid! Thanks. Did you buy this separately because getting it as part of the new car order would have forced you to buy other, non-desirable, options?
All items can be purchased on their own - at the moment there are some supply issues on some items. I ordered on its own and it took a couple of weeks to arrive.
In the unlikely event that it does rattle, then a few of those little fibre pads that stick to the bottom of wooden kitchen chair legs, strategically placed under the ladder, should easily sort that out.
Simon, do you know if the part “B” (the black piece slides into the rail” can be bought separately anywhere? The one came along with the China copied ladder is not well coated which can be rusty easily and I’m looking for a nice replacement.
We have designed our own top mount system that we will be selling soon - send me a pic of your problem to contact at powerful uk dot com and put FAO simon
Hi Good question - the PN's are shown in the below picture The part numbers seem to have been superseded - but i cannot find the new PN on the system www.dropbox.com/s/4hmiblitp39jfal/side%20strip%20defender.png?dl=0
Did you figure out a good way to reattach the top panel cover since the clips broke off? I’m looking to remove my ladder when not needed and am trying to find a solution.
Hi Jason - no mine are still broken... these ladders have been copied in China now so maybe i could buy a batch of covers... but thats not ideal... a 3D printed part would be possible - Let me talk with Julian our new products guy ...
I'm most curious about large engine and steel wheels and brake clearance. Can't wait. And winch install. Dad joke "my truck has a Wench in the front" Wife rolls eyes from front seat. Kids ????
Hey everbody... i'm really appreciating ALL of your great video about the new Defender... but ONE simple Question about that ladder; is it possible to mount it on the other side?!? - In Germany, we ride it on the left side... and if i want to mount a rhino rack shade... it would be so much better, to have the ladder on the right side... so; is it possible and easy to change sides?!? LG from Munich, Bavaria ;)
Yes ---teh Right side has 3 mount holes so can accomodate the Ladder or the side box... the left side has only 2 holes in the waist rail so you can mount only the ladder on the left side.
Just uploaded a video of mine- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ym9OtpuMsgY.html. There is a little bit of play, but certainly not as much as yours. Is the bottom latched in fully?
@@Defender3d Interesting - they have superseded to a new part number ... I wonder if the one I got is a new one ? ( I only got it a week ago ) ... interesting....
One question: Do you have a part number for the bropen plastic part? The numbers printet on it are the one for the whole Ladder and my LR dealer did not find the part in his catalouge. Kind regards Michael
Hi gents, Can you take off the ‘stylish square’ on the 110? Also gents - tell Tyler to keep the drill spinning the same way when he pulls it out (haha)
How very dare you... the square is sacred ! Gerry will come and haunt you and you car will break down if you touch that square...where else are you going to write your shopping list... or leave messages for the technicians when you drop the car off at the dealers.. Interesting its an option on the 90 !
@@L663 You can put the key(s) in the same place where your locking wheel key (socket) is, so you haven't got to add to your keyring, after all it want be used on a daily basis :)
For over 700 Pounds you get a wiggly, badly closing, rattling and car panel damaging (when climbing it) device...wow...great...they're probably going to sell a lot of these...Thank you for your nice review as always by the way... I own a real Defender for more then a decade now and I think my ladder costed around 75 Pounds? Super durable, no loose bits, no rattling, no damaging risks while using, nor when mounting, etc...like they're trying to reinvent the wheel and they're not making a very good job of it...
Thank God the 'Leo Sayer' decal has gone from that side panel. Did people look strangely at you when driving around? Corrugations will play havoc with that ladder.
Hey - that was the great Gerry McGovern you are referring to ! He will be coming back.... People look at me strangely all the time... i get used to it ! Have you seen my smart car !
Simon and team, please help. While fitting a roof-rack, the fitter broke the two near side clips on my ladder “cover” (the trim but you fitted last in the video)…my Land Rover dealer tells me the trim piece is not available separately 🙄😳….I can’t believe that Land Rover would really expect someone to buy an entire new ladder, just for a couple of trim clips!
Hi - don't panic...these ladders have been copied in China now so the top parts will be available soon on their own. Also i need to look at designing a better cover as a lot of people want to take their ladder on and off from time to time !
@@L663 really appreciate that…I have also had to stick quite a few foam stickies in various places on mine to try and stop the rattles, wind buffeting and vibration. Clever design and mechanism, but poor finishing with too many plastic bits. Thanks for a great channel and cool little business clearly driven by passion!
Somethings not right with yours. Mine has a tiny bit of wiggle at the top left but none at the bottom. It barely moves when it’s closed up. I would look into that further.
Hi - interesting - I did show the video to "Mr Skywalker" first and he did not raise any concern... I now need to go to the dealer forecourt and do a wiggle test !
