Pizza Hut has to do layoffs because their pizza sucks and no one is eating it anymore, not because minimum wage went up. Their quality fell off a cliff about 10 years ago and it just gets worse over time. Most of the ones in our area went out of business a long time ago. Wages can go up if you are still selling a good product and keeping customers, but Pizza Hut can't do that. No one is spending a ton of money on a crap cardboard pizza from Pizza Hut in this current economy when the $6.99 frozen one from the grocery store tastes better.

they can. I have made min wage most my life guess what I now own a house a car with no payment lol. min wage being higher has nothing to do with not living over your means. I have 2 jobs atm and dont even make 50k a year. I do live in a cheap area of Missouri. not as cheap as 2 years ago lol. But I managed to get a house and a car and work. and I make more then I spend every month. And yes one of my jobs is part time at min wage. the other is full time at like 1.50 or something over min wage lol. even combined both jobs have me making less than you would expect. Yet I have more than people would expect. This may be the problem I didnt buy a 400k house or a 100k car either so I mean I do have a fancy iphone 2 gens old no plans to upgrade the wife has a 0 cost free 5g cheap samsung phone. "New law costs 1,000 drivers their jobs." Well, is that the whole truth? How about the pizza business has been declining and low wages helped keep the business viable. So, the pizza business has been marginal for a long time. What the news people are not telling you is how long has the pizza business on the decline? And a hint to the answer is consumers have changed social habits buying pizza from pizza shops and are buying more from their grocery store. On your next trip to the grocery store take a moment and look at the wide variety of frozen pizza. And the space to showcase the product. And the prices are substantially cheaper. And the bargain sales are many. So, the competition is high. My interpretation is we have been living on wages that could support buying pizza from restaurants and folks are simply changing habits because wages haven't kept up with expenses. Eating pizza with family or friends as a social treat is losing its charm. Does anyone remember all the pizza commercials on TV media during the 90's, especially during sports and primetime? I haven't seen promotional advertising on any billboards. Why, aren't they working?
@TeKnoVKNG23

Yep, the quality of most delivery places has dropped like a rock over the years while the price for their pizza has skyrocketed. Last time I think I ordered pizza was on an NFL sunday at a friend's house and we couldn't run out to get anything because we were watching his kids. Went online to Dominos. They had a special for like $5.99 per medium 2 topping pizza, so I got us 3 of those. By the time we paid the delivery fee(which isn't a tip), the online order fee, taxes, and the tip for the driver, those 3 pizzas were over $30. Meanwhile you can get a halfway decent pizza at the grocery store for $6-7 and just make it yourself. I don't order/eat at mainstream pizza places anymore, it's either one from the grocery store or a local mom and pop pizza shop that still makes their own stuff. Pizza Hut has to do layoffs/is failing because their quality fell off a cliff a long time ago and they still want to charge $20 for a crap large pizza that is grease soaked cardboard and people have had enough.
@JohnBowl14690

Delivery will soon be cut in half. Just wait until the layoffs hit. I've used Grub Hub only once in my life. I can cook a meal in 10 minutes for less than $3. Delivery is way too expensive, and that's coming from someone with zero car or mortgage debt.

Love ya Ken but your points are heavily flawed. 😊 1. These laws only apply for the major franchisees as you stated. Most of them are easily making net profit in the multi-millions. -so AFTER their expenses they are green. The extra $4 they have to pay each employee is not going to destroy them. 2. The real reason they're shutting these restaurants down is twofold, half of it is in protest to the wage hike. The other half is because by shutting a restaurant down in California you can open it up in another state. When you said that they don't want to shut down these businesses. They're going to open up a new restaurant elsewhere (like ohio) and it's not really hurting them. 3. The small businesses are not affected by the law and also small business aren't able to just up and move like the major franchises.

I’m just not that sympathetic to fast food restaurants. Beyond the health costs to society, another problem is they compared to “shop owners” pay less tax from a zoning perspective. I’d rather see 4 shop owners making bread, making cheese, making burgers at a butcher and selling vegetables and supporting the town (and their families )with 4 tax payments than 1 drive thru burger joint with 1 tax payment. @@vickieclark5931 Agreed. It only becomes a viable career path if you tend to mov eup through the ranks. before landing my first marekting job, I was a barista making $8.25 /hour. I only took the job to pay off student debt. But after being there for 9 months and prior to receiving a job offer for my marketing role, I was getting ready to learn how to be a shift leader to make a little more money. But Starbucks did provide a clear career path. You could go from barista to shift to ASM to manager, to district manager. in that regard - it is a career path, but only because you're not supposed to stay at the bottom forever. Some people will - but those are usually just college students or that one retired woman who just wants something to do.

It's not the law that caused this- it's corporate greed

the law changed wages of drivers from server plus tips to 20 bucks an hour? that raises the pizza places cost to make having drivers not worth it. they would lose money on delivery.

Yes, it is the law. The government needs to stay out of people's businesses. Thanks to the idiots that run that state, many are now out of work. That is what happens when the government takes over. People get screwed.

I wish our greedy government would spend less time mucking up the economy and more time securing our boarders... Yeah, a lot of corporations are greedy, but this is basic high school economics. You increase your overhead, you're either going to have to raise prices (burden to consumers), or cut overhead (burden to employees). Sometimes both happens. I do not understand this idea that some corporations just pull money out of their butts magically...

If you can't afford to pay your employees decent salaries, you should not be in business.It's a testament to how poorly you run your business.
