I used to own a '50 Ford 8N with all of the implements, plows, bush hog, box blade, nearly everything that could be hooked to it. The only problem I ever had with it was with the coil overheating. Once that happened the tractor would stop dead in it's tracks until the coil cooled back down. When my wife suddenly died of Cancer (we had no clue she had it until it was too late). I just put everything together in one package deal and sold it all including a new twin axle trailer I had bought to haul the tractor on. Sometimes life just isn't fair and throws things at you that you just can't avoid. That was nearly twenty years ago but I still have fond memories of that old 8N.

Interesting that it has a ballast resistor. I always thought 6V didn't require a resistor since the amperage was already so low. Positive ground makes my brain hurt...

Any of the N-series of Ford tractors is a great starting place for anyone who has never done any mechanic work and simply wishes to try their hand at it. The Ford shop manual (FO-4) put out by I&T Shop Service covers the entire N-series line, and can be found at any Tractor Supply store, it and the Steiner Tractors parts catalog are an absolute must have.

I had one years ago too. Lol. The gas tank was rusted on the inside and somebody put an old zenith carburetor on it from another tractor. But hey it still ran though. Lol. Most lawnmowers have more HP nowadays than an 8n does. Lmao 😂

I am 70 years old and I can’t tell you how many terrace I rebuilt with our 8N Ford with a two bottom 14” plow when I was a kid. Out of three boys which I was the youngest that 8N was my tractor. I know every nut and bolt on that tractor because I restored it and kept it all original except I didn’t change the electrical system to a 12 volt system. I put an 8 volt battery in the old girl and turned up the voltage regulator. When it’s 20 below O it’s the only thing that starts. We also had a 861 Ford Powermaster and a Ford 4000 narrow front end with a two row corn picker. I would take it all over the county and open up corn fields because the combine technology was not that great back then and the darn things would knock down more corn when they tried to open up the fields. I think I can tune up a gas Ford tractor blindfolded.

I used a gm alternator and gutted the ignition coil and used it as a "junction box" for connection to the distributor and high voltage lead to a generic round can 12v coil mounted by the oil filter housing. I think its called the "hobo conversion" or something

Hi. New subscriber from Northeast Iowa here! I saw your 1st video (to me) was the breaking apart this tractor's engine with all the broken sleeves inside! What I'm truly enjoying is when I grew up on our family farm, I lost my tractor cherry on my grandpa's 1947 8N and yes - it was painted blue in the 7os, lol. Well as I grew older, I learned a lot about that tractor and I did a full rebuild on it too (vs. restoration). I also upgraded the electrical, etc. This was 0ver 40 years ago now. Now I'm retired and my wife and I live on our hobby farm and these days, I'm hunting for another 8N that's ready to go, lol. I'll enjoy watching more of your videos I'm sure! Thanks for taking the time to share your work!

I'm doing a 12-volt conversion on my 51 Ferguson TO-20. Also adding lights which were optional from the factory, and a few other things. These tractors were the Ford Ferguson I believe, Ford building the little tractor under licence until a dispute between Henry Ford's son and Harry Ferguson, this tractor was the first to have the three point linkage system and controllable hydraulics and is still the basis of virtually all farm tractors even today.

My grandpa had small farm with cows pigs and chicken. He had a Ford 8 N and a Oliver. I was ten my dad had two and a half acre of land. The one acre was for a garden. I would ride my bike three miles to Grandpa's and get the Ford and the wagon. With the plow and disc on the wagon. I would drive to my house work up the garden. Then take it all back to Grandpa's house Best time ever.

Interesting rebuild Blake. It might be interesting to explain the different engines Ford used. I've always been intrigued by their Flat head V8.
@buckhorncortez
@buckhorncortez 4 года назад
The flat head only appeared in Ford tractors through a "Funk conversion." That was a conversion kit manufactured by Funk Aircraft in Coffeyville, KS. Funk started the conversion kits in 1943 for a six cylinder industrial engine conversion and then made the V8 conversion kit in 1949 and 1950. The V8 conversion kits are still available today from www.awesomehenry.com/

I put an electronic ignition system on my farmall cub a while back and love it. My understanding is the biggest killer of these is leaving the ignition on when the engine isn't running. To prevent me from doing this I added an oil pressure switch with a buzzer and light powered off the ignition coil. If the ignition is on and I don't have oil pressure then it makes an annoying buzzing sound.

I just finished a 12V conversion for an 8N. I kept the OEM points and added an automotive-style coil. Engine starts in one turn. I suggest getting a starter solenoid that has a terminal that feeds the coil full 12V when cranking, it really makes a hot spark.

Electronic ignition will be way better than points and condenser. Like you said, when it works it works but it can be a headache once it starts giving trouble and new points don’t last like the old ones. Neither do condensers. Also, I’m sure you probably know this, but once you convert that tractor to 12 volts, make sure you buy a solenoid for a ford tractor and not a ford truck if you are going to use the factory starter button. It will not start with the factory button if you use a pickup solenoid. You have to short across the terminals with a screwdriver.

are you going to do the hydraulic conversion for the 3point arm... its a unit that goes below the seat with 1 or 2 levers depending on which you order... you could do the lift arm and a center link with the 2 lever... I have only seen 2 places that ever carried it (2 different companies models). The cover just under the seat is the lift height regulator and such for the 3 point lift system... they take the pressure and make it usable for upto 2 small cylinders.
