That quilt top is amazing! Definitely worth picking up and finishing. Using a lighter to clean up the edges of your coaster is totally fine as long as the thread is polyester. It’ll just singe them and seal the ends where it was sort of frayed. I was taught to use a lighter years ago in the military to keep my uniform looking neat and still use the trick all the time. I haven’t set anything on fire yet! Haha

Thanks so much for putting my mind at ease re the lighter! I will test it on something first I think, I would hate to set Winnie the Pooh alight! Interesting you say about the lighter with your uniform, my son in law was in the Army so I am going to ask him if he did that. Have a great weekend 🧵😊

What a lovely quilt top, Carole! Someone put a lot of love into that top, and I think it’s great that you are finishing it. You absolutely must finish it before washing. Ideally, you should wash fabric first before using, but since it’s already made up, just wait on that. Those triangles make the cathedral window pattern, just turn the sides down and top stitch them. As for quilting, I don’t recommend stitching around the entire quilt top before quilting as sometimes the fabric tends to bunch up under the needle, even with a walking foot. On a quilt like that I would outline all the parts that I could and for sure the straight edges, all in the ditch, if possible. Any other quilting lines will detract from the beauty of the appliqué, in my opinion. You are correct about the backing, it doesn’t have to strictly match the other fabrics, but compliment, a neutral would look good. You’ve got this, don’t give up, and don’t forget to use your walking foot! Have a great weekend 😊

Hi Sue, don't worry I won't wash it yet! That seems to be the opinion of everyone so far. Thanks so much for all your suggestions, I am taking notes. Your idea of not quilting the whole thing in my mind is right as it think it will spoil the applique parts. I am definitely changing the binding and backing colours. White obviously isn't the right choice! Thanks so much again and don't worry, I don't attempt any quilting without my walking foot (pouches and bags etc). This project won't be done until after my holiday now so I will have a lot of time to plan it. Have a great weekend and thanks so much for your support 🧵😊

Wow Carole, what a great find with that quilt. I don't know too much about quilting but I'm sure whatever you decide will be beautiful. I love my Enlighten too. I've had mine for 12 years now. ITH embroidery projects are addicting. Congratulations on your coaster. I never use a lighter. Trim or leave the edge as is. Or try a different brand of stabilizer. Not too much you can do. I love your outdoor sewing set up. Enjoy your trip to the US. I hope you get to stop by Florida again. It was truly wonderful to see you and Chris. Glad your arm is healing well! 😘💖

Hi Grace, hope Zoe is still doing well? I don't know much about quilting but I figured I have done a few mug rugs so I must be capable of finishing this, even if it is just done simply! Honestly that Janome overlocker is just so clunky and basic compared to the Enlighten, I am so glad to be back in my sewing room again with the Babylock. Re the ITH project, they suggested tearaway and of course that leaves little fuzzy bits, you are right though I could use something different rather than set the house alight 😂. We are visiting Virginia this time round for some walking in the Blue Ridge, hopefully we will get back to Florida sometime in 2025. Hope all is well and thanks so much for watching xx💗

I really hope I don't spoil the quilt so I intend to keep it simple. Wasn't it just a lucky find? I only wish the ladies in the charity shop knew more about it or who it came from because maybe I could have given it back to the maker or their family when finished. I just love sewing for my two monkeys, they still love anything Nanny makes and long may that last! Can't wait to catch up with you too, not long now 💗xx

I don't know anything about quilting either, I just want to finish the quilt in the best and easiest way i can. It does seem as though it isn't as easy as I thought judging by all the comments.! Hi Carole, I’m a bit behind on RU-vids as we’ve had family visiting and been on a trip to the Edinburgh tattoo (was fab weather was appalling though 💨 🌧). I love the quilt top you found absolutely stunning and I look forward to seeing how you finish it (which you’ve probably done by now). The dresses for the little girls are gorgeous. Nothing wrong with buying a top and remodelling it into something you want that fits, if you like the fabric it’s a good idea (one for me to store). Thanks as ever. ☺️

Hi Ann. I'm glad you had an enjoyable trip to Edinburgh, that must have been quite something to see, weather aside! No I haven't done anything to the Quilt yet as we are now away in Virginia USA. Hi, beautiful quilt. My advice, 2 things, 1-you could serge the edges and wash the quilt on a delicate cycle since the blocks are hand sewn 2- you could finish the quilt, i.e., batting, backing and binding, quilt it or have it quilted then wash it. Personally, I would do the latter. I just finished piecing hand sewn quilt blocks my mother did over 40 years ago. I sashed each block added a border, batting, backing. Sent it to my long arm quilter who absolutely loved it. Then I did the binding. I presented the quilt to my mother, who is 90, with 2 of my sisters and 1 older brother. She was amazed and couldn’t believe she did those blocks. I do encourage you to complete this quilt top and present it to your granddaughter and when she is older, tell her the story of your find. What a treasure. ❤️

Hi Carole! I have been using a lighter on little bits of thread for 2 years now in both garment and bag making. It's brilliant and so effective. I use it on the ends of zipper tape as well when I have to cut it. Works great on strapping (the kind you use for bag handles) too. Running a lighter back and forth on the cut ends, seals them. Two things to remember when using a lighter: first, a flame has 2 different colors, if you will. The top of the flame will be more orange and the base of the flame will have a bluish area. The base of the flame is what you want to use on thread. The second thing to keep in mind is you very briefly and very quickly, touch the base of the flame to the thread only. Because you are using Polyester thread, it shrivels up, melting. It sounds harder than it is. I would not do it if using cotton or silk threads.
@socarole66
@socarole66 2 месяца назад
Thanks so much Rita for putting my mind at ease re the lighter! I use it on the ends of strapping and ribbon so maybe I should just be brave and attempt the coaster. Great tip on the different parts of the flame, I had no idea about that at all. I will try the flame on a tester piece first I think, I would hate to set Winnie the Pooh alight!! Have a great weekend and thanks again 🧵😊

@ritaadler-everett5392 2 месяца назад
@@socarole66 If you already use a lighter on strapping then you have nothing to worry about! The blue part of the flame is the hottest point and won't leave a black or singed residue like the top of the flame can. So yes, please keep Winnie the Pooh safe!🧸🍯

In the hoop. I would do any further coasters on wash away stabiliser. You then trim it at the end and remove the bits with a cotton bud dipped in water. A lot less stressful. You can get it from Embroidered Just For you x

Hi Carol I would suggest you finish your quilt before washing & I would also recommend once you've got it all layered to quilt that you could stitch around the triangles with a scent 1/4 inch seam to secure the edges to create a bit of decorative quilting then all you need is to stitch in the ditch on as many or as few straight sides as you want. Again I think a little print incorporating the lime green or lilac or both for the backing & borders would certainly frame the quilt 😍 I love all your content so please keep vlogging Marie Happy sewing x

The triangles can be left as they are. They are often made like that. In the past I have also sometimes sewn them by hand with a slip stitch. I should look for a lavender fabric for the backing. A mottled fabric would be best when you cannot get an exact match the quilt is beautiful and it’s sad it ended up at a charity shop

Hi Carole, I realise you might already know this but there’s a Dress a girl contact in the UK that you can send your amazing little dresses too. But you still log the numbers with Mari so they get counted in the September overall scores. That’s what I did last year. Thought it would save you taking the dresses all the way to the US. They look great btw.

Hi Jan, thanks so much for your comment. I did send mine to the UK contact last year actually but was sad they wouldn't have gone towards Mari's total so that's why I wanted to send them to her this year like I had the previous year. I had no idea she could total them in with hers! That is so annoying. I will probably send them to her now though as I've said it. Thanks for letting me know though 🥰. 🧵

Carole, that is a wonderful idea to finish that quilt top and it can be finished up however you want it to be. That's what makes quilting a unique sewing art -- even if you sew up the traditional styles of quilts, you are still putting your own personal preferences and techniques in to the piece. On the quilt top you found, the pieces that were left open like that are called "flying geese". You don't have to fold over the open edges if you don't want to; you could just stitch them down as they are. The cathedral window pattern usually has all edges folded over. Maybe the quilter putting this together was just adding her own style to the flying geese and was blending versions of both patterns. If you don't have batting, you could use some flannel fabric or a flannel sheet. You could make it a larger quilt size by sewing on additional borders to bring out the different colors in the quilt top. I think you're backing fabric color is fine. If I were doing the quilt, I'd use something other than white for the binding though because that just shows the dirt so quickly. That's just my thinking; use what you want. If you're planning to quilt the piece yourself, you can do any sort of stitching. You could pencil a straight line design going throughout the piece; or do some big swirls all over; or even just stitch in the ditch around the borders; or embroider whatever design you want to do on it with your embroidery machine. Oh my gosh, I've gone on long enough. I'm sure you'll do right by it.

Hi Deb, hope you are having a good weekend. Thanks so much for all your quilting advice, I am writing all this points down. I think the person intended the triangles to be left looking more closely at the quilt so I will keep them that way. I do have a massive piece of very expensive bamboo batting so I am going to use that. I am sure I will never make another quilt after this one! Thanks so much for saying just finish the quilt however I want, you are right. As long as I don't ruin it and keep it simple it will do the job. Last thing I want is to spoil their original effect. Thanks for having faith in me! 🧵😊xx

Hi Carol. The quilt is a great find. Cathedral window is what the triangles are, instructions are on utube. I wouldn't wash the fabric until it's finished. I would personally quilt from the middle outwards, maybe sew 1/4 inch around the applique with something in the blank spaces. If you don't quilt within 8 inches, the fabric is loose. You also said that you'd put a white border on, would that get dirty quickly? I hope this is helpful. I'm sure you will make a great job of it.

Hi Carol, what a find that quilt top! Folding the folded edges of the flying geese would create a cathedral window look and it can be done as part of the quilting or before and yes they are top stitched down. I would not do a white binding, try pulling that dark lavender or the medium value lavender for binding, even a darker lime green. I know you won’t be able to use the same fabric but a solid would work. As far as quilting the sky’s the limit but if you could pull off a bubble motif as a background for the “swimming” area that would be cool. And/or you could echo or outline around each sea creature as well as stitch in the ditch on the outer and inner borders. Also stitch in the ditch around the flying geese simultaneously adding that cathedral edge would be nice too. And I would finish it then wash it. I think all the crinkles give it character. Lots of luck, whatever you do be proud of it. Great find!

Depending on the batting you use is how close the quilting need to be. So are every 4 to 6 inches. Especially if you expect it to be washed. Otherwise the batting can wad up and ruin the quilt. I personally would not bind a quilt with white, it's hard to keep clean. I would also suggest that you find a print that will coordinate with the rest of the fabric and add another border and use for the backing to tie it all together. That is a beautiful find. Enjoy your time quilting.

I have not quilted so have no advice but am thrilled the quilt top got into the right hands - yours! Not everyone understands or appreciates the amount of work and skill handmade things represent. Sometimes people just abandon projects, though - I might have a few of them around my sewing room...🙄. One of my late sisters loved to needlepoint and bought many handpainted canvases and I am currently working on a piece from her stash as I feel almost a kind of responsibility to bring some of those items to fulfillment. This piece will be put into my bedroom and will be a kind of shared project between us - she selected it, and I am doing the work she was not able to do 😊. The dresses you are making are lovely - so much fun to make pretty dresses and wonderful that people you have not met will know someone cares about them and took the time to sew something fun and pretty for them.

Forgot to say, yes, it’s safe-if you move the lighter along quickly enough-but it’s very easy to accidentally scorch it. If you or your husband or a friend has a heat gun for removing paint, or a soldering iron, or a hot fix crystals mini crafting iron, you can probably use one of those instead of an open flame?

Thanks so much Norma, judging by the comments it is ok to use the flame but I think it will need practice. I do use a lighter on bag straps etc but never on anything that delicate. My Dad has a soldering iron so I may give that a go, thanks for that suggestion. Have a good weekend 🧵😊

What a cute quilt. Folding back the edge of the triangles and then stitching them down is a technique I have used in several quilts and I like how it looks. It really isn't difficult to do. My kids like flannel on the back of their quilts, I think they like it because it is so soft. . You just need to remember to prewash the flannel because it shrinks. I like using a busy print on the back of quilts because then if my stitches aren't perfect they don't show. I'm sure Izzy will have lots of ideas to help you with your quilt. The project dress a girl dresses are so cute. And the boys shirts are adorable as well. The green fabric you found at the quilt store looks so soft. Thank you so much for sharing.

Hi Carol, thanks so much for all your ideas. I do like the idea of the Cathedral window but after looking at the quilt properly I don't think that was what the person intended as the applique bits aren't finished underneath the triangles, if that makes sense. I really want to try that on something else though! Great idea about a busy print underneath, I hadn't thought of hiding bad stitching! Have a great weekend and thanks again 🧵😊

Re quilting, I always use an easy method and that is to use my wavy line stitch on the sewing machine, set to 7 mm and lengthened a bit (try first). I use a Frixxion pen (or other wash or iron away marker) to mark a grid, I like diagonal lines, and then when you sew with the wavy stitch you just can’t tell if you go off line at all! Win, win! Can’t wait to see how it turns out, Carole! X

Hi Carole, I was a professional quilter for years writing patterns and making quilts for major quilting fabric companies. I also had my own quilt shop at one point and taught classes.Don't wash it before you quilt it. It will become distorted and be difficult to straighten out plus the edges will fray. I wouldn't sew down the triangles. They are supposed to look like fish and many times people leave them loose like that because it adds dimension.As for quilting, you have to see what kind of batting you are using. Don't use 100%polyester. On the batting package it will say how far apart the batting needs to be quilted. Don't get thick batting. If it's not secured that amount the batting might fall apart. Since you're new to quilting, I would say to baste it altogether with safety pins or quilt basting spray like 505 (my choice) and quilt a grid of some sort with a walking foot. Cut your batting and backing a few inches larger than the quilt all around. Always start quilting in the middle of the quilt and work your way out. You will probably need to mark lines to follow before you sandwich your quilt together. As I said the lines need to be the distance recommended by the batting. It's especially important for a baby quilt that will get frequent washing that it is quilted enough. That's a quick summary of my way but there are many different ways of finishing quilts. I'm sure you can find many videos out there. It's such a cute and well done top. It's great that you saved it! Always enjoy watching you.

Gosh, if anyone is an expert quilter it is you! You are right about the triangles and actually when I looked underneath them you can see the raw edge of some of the applique fish. The quilter obviously didn't intend them to be sewn down 'cathedral window' style. I have a huge very expensive piece of bamboo batting I bought for the one other baby quilt I did so I am going to use that. It was bought from a sewing shop so no instructions on it. I am writing all these suggestions down but the one thing I have learnt from everyone is not do bind the quilt in white, I can't believe the Quilt shop lady didn't tell me and she said it was a good idea! I really appreciate your time taken in commenting thank you and hopefully I can get it finished after my holiday. 🧵😊

Hi Carole! You have been very productive! I love all of the dresses. They will surely bring happiness and joy. I’d like to weigh in on your quilt project. I’m not an expert but I like to make bed runners. May I suggest not to do a white binding for a child’s quilt because these tend to get laundered more often. The lime green will be difficult to match so I suggest a small ditsy print for the binding. A coordinated ditsy pattern fabric could be used for the backing, so that way the quilt is reversible! The staff at the fabric store are often very helpful in fabric selection, so I would take the quilt with you.

Hi Carol, you have been busy with all those little dresses and the t/shirts for your grandsons. I would definitely wait until the quilt is finished before washing. The lady in the quilt show was referring to Cathedral Window for the turned edges of the triangles its an easy slip stitch. I also would echo stitch around the fish etc., this can be done with your sewing machine. Stitching in the ditch sometimes isn't easy so stitch just outside or inside of straight lines or better still use your serpentine stitch. For backing i often buy a flannelette sheet it makes for a nice cosy feel. Wash and tumble dry the sheet first. Good luck, I look forward to seeing it finished. Lovely photos as always. Hi Carol, I would definitely finish the quilt before washing, otherwise you might find the shape of the quilt top distorts a bit! You could stitch the edges of the triangles down in a curve as you were showing (look up Cathedral Window technique) but I would be tempted to stitch the edges down straight as they are - will add to the stitch in the ditch quilting and keep the fabric secure. I think something like the darker pink/purple inner border fabric would be good for the binding, and lilac fabric for the backing. Look forward to seeing it finished! Mandy x

So the folding over of the triangles, (flying geese), you can look up as cathedral window on quilting you tube. Alternatively, when quilting you could stitch along them, like a top stitch. Have you got batting for the quilt. You may be able to use your embroidery machine to quilt square by square and mimic the fish pattern with a quilted outline. There are you tubes for that as well. Personally I would freemotion quilt it.

What a busy and productive week you had. The quilt is adorable. Are you going to quilt it by hand or machine? If by machine I would definitely sew down those flying geese/cathedral parts as they might get caught in your foot as you quilt. I would put it all together first and extend the back and batting beyond the edge of the quilt and bind it when the quilting is done. I assume the fish need to be stitched down as well. I would do a blanket stitch on all of those as well as the triangles in question. A darker more colorful fabric for the binding for sure! Your granddaughter will be carrying it around and loving it. The boys are adorable in their shirts, how fun. Dress a girl dresses are really perfect with those pockets. I made I think 7 or 8 last year but have not even started yet. Where does the time go? Your strawberry shirt fabric is so pretty and will be so nice when you cut it down. Halloween dress to finish, wow, so cute. I know you will get it all done in time. Enjoy!

Hi Carol, I disagree with the notion they should be made into cathedral windows (turning the edges over) Because 1) it is not a traditional cathedral window pattern and 2) the maker would have incorporated that turn in her appliqué, and she didn’t, she appliquéd right over it. There is a way to make a half square triangle without dealing with bias edges, and one of those ways would be folding the fabric like those flying geese are folded (flying geese is the border in question). Qualifications for these statements? 30 years quilting, 6 as a professional quilter. Back to garments, my own roots, but still quite taken with quilting. Thanks for saving it, a straight line quilting would be just fine, as are the fabric selections you’ve made.

Great spot by you! After reading your comment I looked more closely at the quilt and sure enough, the fish underneath the triangles were raw edges so no way would she have wanted those triangles turned back. Hi Carole - love the quilt top - the best advice I can give, though I do quilt myself, is to consult an expert site. There's a wonderful lady called Sherryl (or Sherrill?!) who has a You Tube channel called "The Sewing Room Channel" - she has a library of "how to's" that you can look at - I'm sure that would help with your "in betweeny" dilemma. She and her husband are very entertaining - even the dog gets in on the act sometimes. I tend to prewash fabrics BEFORE starting any project - as this is beyond that stage, I'd wait until the whole thing is complete, otherwise your washing machine might "help" undo things and make a real mess. There's a chance that the original quilter possibly prewashed it, or she may be of the school of thought that you don't wash it until it's competely sewn. I'd also recommend a walking foot on your machine to stop all the layers shifting around. Your triangular pieces definitely need either straight stitching down or the "cathedral window" option that the shop lady recommended. One recommendation I would pass on is that when you put the binding on, go for a medium to dark colour otherwise the quilt edges will quickly get "ditched" when it's in use. Good luck - a lot of the hard work looks as if it's been done by the orginal sewing person. Kind regards Mary O

What a wonderful find Carole!! those triangles are - or were- intended to be - Cathedral Windows. You basically gently turn back and stitch down the triangle edges - it gives a beautiful effect. Whether you choose to do this or not is obviously up to you - but I would say give it a go!!! Once batting and backing have been basted on I would as you say stitch in the ditch on all the main lines across the quilt - trim it square and then add the binding. Recommend you try binding by machine - game changer. Oh and I have 2 books on a beginners guide to quilting that is brilliant and one on cathedral windows - more than happy to gift to you - do just pm me if interested!! Good luck and on behalf of quilters everywhere I was so touched by your obvious love and admiration for this quilt!! #sossaveourstitches

Hi there, thank you so much for all your help and advice re the quilt. I am taking notes on everything that has been suggested. I really like the look of Cathedral windows but on closer look at the quilt, the maker obviously didn't have that in mind. The appliqued fish sometimes go over the triangles and sometimes underneath with raw edging. That would show if I did the cathedral bit. They will have to be left which to be honest, would be better for me being a beginner quilter. I do think judging by all these comments I have taken on far more than I bargained for! For me, I need to just finish the quilt, not spoil it and then pass onto someone who will love it. I am sure that is what the maker will have wanted. Your offer of the book is really kind, I think this could put me off quilting even more though 😂 time will tell! Have a great weekend and thanks again 🧵😊

That's a fly geese border. You can curl the sides of the geese, but personally I would just leave it. Are the geese lined or do you see the edge of fabric. If the geese are lined I'd live it and when giving it to your granddaughter place love letters in there. Put wadding (batting) and a backing on it and get it quilted. It would be better if you'd hand quilt it. Then wash when done.
