I've been a roadster owner on and off for well over 40 years and always considered Japanese open sports cars not classic enough, not masculine enough or plain boring. Not any more. I've sold my MGB and hope to buy this modern day classic in the future. The engineering is outstanding with styling that gets attention everywhere.The MX5 goes further than jst the world's favourite roadster. It captures the essence of what is a pure sports car like no other. Mazda has zoomed into my life.

I just watched WhatCar's review before yours and I have to say, yours is so much better. I know which channel I'll be watching from now on. Great work

If i had ordered the soft, it would definitely have been powered by a 1.5 engine. I hung out for the RF and primarily because of the weight hike, I bought the 2litre. I actually, prefer mazdas mx5 1.5 engine but the overtaking lane was a bit of hard work. The 2 litre has extra breath for it, if not quite the same poise and slight manoeuvrability the lighter car possessed. Good upload. Cheers.

Wow thats a beautiful video about a beautiful car... Personally, I love analog meters! They have much more character and feel than 2 or 3 digits keep changing their value when we press accelerator.

Damnnn. Now i want the 1.5 in the u.s. it also comes with stop start teck to give you phenomenal fuel economy
@TestDrivenUK
@TestDrivenUK 8 лет назад
+slllll The 2.0 isn't bad on economy itself - we averaged nearly 47 mpg (think that's about 39 US mpg) on a longer journey in ours.
@slllll1712

it isnt bad. but the 1.5 is almost geo metro good

Now I understand why some drivers complain about hitting the Nav button while shifting. Keep that hand on top of the knob not under it!

Nice video. Just one question: the sound from 5:08 - is it the 1.5 or the 2.0 liter engine? Thanks
@TestDrivenUK
@TestDrivenUK 8 лет назад
+xyzphyl The red car is a 1.5, while the blue one is a 2.0 - you can just see the body colour on the door tops. Bear in mind, though, that as I pull away from that roundabout at 5:08 that the roof is down and there's a Transit van next to me that you can just hear. In terms of exhaust noise, I found the 1.5 and 2.0 to be almost identical. Hope that helps, but if I can help further, do please ask.

I'd always wanted the 2 litre for the LSD but just learned in the last day that our Aussie 1.5 models get the LSD anyway unlike other markets in the world - I want the 1.5 now - smaller engine's my dream car now! Living in the city which is 90% of my driving & being restricted to 60km/hr speed limits makes the 2 litre kind of redundant in my case & the even more so 'runs of the stink of an oily rag' consumption ethos makes it even more of an enticing proposition.

No handbrake issues for those of us who drive on the "correct" side of the road. . . ;-) I love my Sport model, it is perfect for New Hampshire USA backroads. No Nav button to hit either. Sadly, it is put away for the winter, it was -3 degrees F here this morning.
@TestDrivenUK
@TestDrivenUK 8 лет назад
+3ducs Ha, nice! I've seen a few people mention the Nav button thing, but it's not a problem I've experienced myself. Bet you can't wait for spring, now...

Yup, going to be a long winter. It's a great car, I have just under 3,000 miles on it, all twisty two lanes.

they need to drop a rotary in this and add a hard top version then it would be just about perfect

Love this car and after that I would consider the 1.5
@TestDrivenUK

+Daniel Anderson Much as it goes against my nature, as I'd normally always opt for the most powerful engine, but in the case of the MX-5, less really is more. Thanks for watching.

Is the road noise (sound of air etc) really bad? From the end of the video it sounds quite bad. My Mk3.5 PRHT is only just bareable on long journeys and this sounds even worse!
@TestDrivenUK
@TestDrivenUK 8 лет назад
+Kai Day Mazda say the new model is 40% quieter than the old car, thanks to added insulation. I took ours for a 200-mile journey up the M1 (and back) and certainly didn't find it to be a problem.
@cufckai
@cufckai 8 лет назад
+TestDriven is that 40% based on the soft top though? I'd guess my hard top protects me from the sound a tad more. Still that sounds good though, it was one thing I'd worry about going to a soft top
@TestDrivenUK
@TestDrivenUK 8 лет назад
+Kai Day Yes, that figure relates purely to the reduction in noise through the fabric roof. Take one for a drive if you can, and let us know what you think.
@TucsonDude
@TucsonDude 8 лет назад
+Kai Day Road noise IS bad. Even with the top up...especially on concrete roads with rain grooves. Gave me a headache after 5 hours on the road. Otherwise, it's a fun little car.

+davedavis 100% agree. It would be cheaper (probably just over $20k), lighter, better-handling, and more fuel efficient.

Don't drive with your hand resting on the shifter...bad for the linkage
@TestDrivenUK
@TestDrivenUK 8 лет назад
+凸(¬_¬)凸 In some cars, it can be bad to be constantly applying force to the lever, yes, but since I'm not doing that, and never have done in all my years on the road, it's not an issue. In the old days, when we had more shift mechanisms directly in the top of the transmission, you could technically wear out the syncromesh by doing that, but that's much less of a thing these days. Mazda's opinion is that you can't make a car with a shift lever that deliberately falls to hand and then expect people to not hold it, so they've engineered it to cope.

+Desperate For Pussy One handed driving is not how to drive period,whether it does or does not wear the selector fork it's about basic vehicle control The same as holding the spokes they fit thumb rests at 10 to 2 for a very good reason it's all about finesse and smooth control of the vehicles attitude through bends

It's too bad Ford and Mazda have gone their separate ways--a 1.6L ecoboost engine the MX-5 would make me happy.

I'm new to this channel and I would like to say this is probably the best review car review channel on the internet. Exilient review of the MX 5 as I'm thing about buying one, just not sure on the engine should I go 1.5 or 2.0ltr
@TestDrivenUK
@TestDrivenUK 8 лет назад
+ParabellumUk Thanks for the kind words! Speaking as someone who would usually spec a car with the largest, most torque-laden engine possible, I would still have the 1.5 - it's a much better balanced car, and the performance gap between the two is much smaller than you'd think. If winning every traffic light Grand Prix is important, then there's probably a case to be made for the 2.0-litre, but then I'd humbly argue that the MX-5 is more about handling than it is outright performance, and in that regard, the 1.5 is better. Find a dealer that will let you drive both, then let us know what you think!
@ParabellumUk
@ParabellumUk 8 лет назад
+TestDriven thx you I will test drive both and if the 1.5 is better balanced I will order that one and save £1500 quid. Just one more question I have tested the GT86 and liked it.. would you say the MX 5 is a better more fun car? I really need to test drive the MX 5 :) just cant stand pushy salepeople.
@TestDrivenUK
@TestDrivenUK 8 лет назад
+ParabellumUk That's a tough call. They're both designed to offer maximum fun without having to drive at licence-losing speeds. I'd say the difference between the two is that the GT86/BRZ wants you to commit to driving it before it gives its best. The MX-5, by comparison, will happily dance about through a corner whether you've asked it to or not. Hope that helps!
