With more people driving electric vehicles in South Korea, the number electric vehicle fires are also on the up.
To counter the problem, the fire department and Korea Expressway Corporation have come up with ways to effectively extinguish such fires.
Jeong Eun-joo has the details.
Firefighters cover a car that's caught fire with a special blanket.
Once the flames disappear, they sprinkle water over the blanket to cool it down.
As it's an electric car, emergency services would have to use copious amounts of water to distinguish the fire and so have had found an alternative method.
“Usually, water has to be sprayed for up to 72 hours. So we started researching ways to extinguish a fire by using as little water as possible.”
A bigger problem with electric vehicle fires is that they often re-ignite due to overheated batteries.
“There were cases of EVs re-igniting a week later at the scrapyard. An effective way to prevent that would be to immerse the cars in a water tank.”
As there have been cases of EVs catching fire while charging, the Korea Expressway Corporation has built fire extinguishing facilities at highway rest stops.
In the event of a fire, a tube installed on the floor rises 60 centimeters to trap water around the vehicle like a water tank.
This helps prevent secondary fires.
“There are many cases of electric vehicles catching fire while charging. So I thought highway rest areas should also have fire extinguishing facilities and installed them.”
There have already been 44 cases of electric vehicle fires just this year.
But with various extinguishing methods, damage from electric vehicle fires is expected to decrease.

0:58 "Electric vehicle fires often reignite due to overheated batteries", the issue is that the batteries still haved stored energy that is released in an uncontrolled fashion due to thermal runaway. Either have to cool them , 260 degrees (copious amounts of water) or figure out how to drain all residual stored energy (highly dangerous & potentially explosive if not done correctly).

If people really wanted to be environmentally friendly they should be buying like old 90s. Toyotas, it's better because mining and production are often more wasteful than just keeping an old car already in the system. Also 90s toyotas are honestly pretty indestructible. I'm 25 and my dad had this Corola from before I was born, the radiator finally cracked 25 years later and the repair cost like 80 dollars. Because it's so small everything is easy to fix yourself and parts are everywhere and can be reused saving materials that otherwise end up in a land fill. AC still works like an ice room.
@NSUScooter
@NSUScooter Год назад
@@konata736You’re pretty naive… But you’re only 25. It’s okay to be naive at that age! You aren’t old enough to remember the anti-asian car movement. If it wasn’t made in America, people called it “Jap Crap” and now people everywhere drive cars that are made in different Asian countries. Especially Hyundai! People hated Hyundai and now they’re competing with Germans. You also weren’t around when people said that cell phones would give you cancer and you would die five years after keeping one in your pocket. Now, everyone has a cell phone and they are not getting cancer because it’s in their pocket... When you were 2 years old, you missed the hysteria about the world coming to an end because of Y2K. There are so many things that you missed out on. You will eventually learn that overtime that innovation is inevitable. These problems about electrical vehicle fires will eventually be solved. Someone will figure out a way to put out electrical vehicle fires effectively and efficiently That’s just the way things are :-) If you want to buy an older Toyota that you can work on yourself, I say go for it. Just understand that you will probably end up spending more money to maintain that car then you would spend buying a brand new smaller car with a good warranty such as a small Kia or a small Hyundai with a 100,000 mile warranty and gets over 35mpg. Good luck to you!

Just a few thoughts on this: So are fire department's going to charge you for putting out the fire on your EV? It's costing them new equipment and materials. So your insurance rates will go up to cover the cost of an accident with your EV. If you get in a minor fender bender with your EV, are you going to go home and park it in your home garage or shared parking? What if there's a short due to the accident and it not only causes the EV to catch on fire but burns down your house and possibly others?

Your local tax dollars fund your local fire department. Power density is what's causing the fires to be so difficult to put out in the first place. A lithium ion battery is basically a bomb. Exactly how are they supposed to do that? Do you have any idea what the sheer scale of that would entail? The only way to actually put the battery fire out, is to cool them down, and that requires a MASSIVE amount of water... To make matters worse, the batteries are often inaccessible because they have to be in a protected part of the vehicle, to protect them from collisions. Which makes getting to them with water very difficult, under normal circumstances, you don't want water ingress into the battery compartment.. so adding a special port to connect to water supply is not an option.. it adds way too many variables, and there's no way that could be economically feasible, to where it would actually be safe and reliable.

@@SnoozeButton37 EV is as green as it's energy source. Assuming power station using clean energy. The mining of lithium ion to make the huge battery 🔋for 1 EV. Tens of thousands of times bigger than a smartphone. EV fire that can burn for days producing toxic smoke. Gallons of 💦 water wasted. Firemen drown them in river.

What’s the resale value of an EV? I think no one will buy it because of the aged batteries car? How is that environmentally friendly if it’s a one-time use thing? And people are just hyped by these electrified cars because there are so many electrical components that can install to be flashy than your regular ICE car.

It’s 60% more carbon in manufacturing but over life time use its minuscule compared to gas vehicles. Lithium ion is toxic but it’s confined to the vehicle and only becomes toxic in the event of fires and so on. Petrol is wide spread and is transported a lot due to the consistent use by petrol cars so the consistent transport of petrol by trucks increases the risk of a crash by the trucks which increases the risk of petrol leakage.

@@BigJMC Well, since in most big countries electricity is still being produced by a burning freaking coal... It isn't that much better in carbon emission.

The workers go mad too quickly to justify the training. Unlike the olden days when people were sane. Same with soldiers. Such things are not worth the additional costs. You profit and i have to suffer-costs for your profit.? Easier to deprecate hyundai and kia and whatever you south-korea have. Either you justify for the costs or you are worthless.
