New Mini RC Drift Build, Converting a Model Car to RC: Part 1 Overview, Teardown, and Test Fit Axle

With winter beginning to show its fury, my attention has turned to some indoor projects. I decided to attempt a unique build involving converting a plastic model car to a RWD RC drift missile. In this video I introduce the project car for this build; an assembled 1/24 1991 Pontiac Firebird model kit. Give an over view of my plans for this project, and tear down the model to give myself a clean slate to mount the electronics to. As I was building I realized a 1/24 scale axle I previously used in a similar car set up for drag racing would fit nearly perfectly in to this car, adding an extra level of realism but also add difficulty to this already tricky build. Will it drift? Will it even drive? Will it catch on fire? Too early to tell but this will be one epic build.

note: when buying non-hobby grade motors always look for CARBON BRUSHED motors. conventional DC motors use thin metal fingers as brushes which wear through quickly. carbon-brushed motors are blocks which have a lot of material to wear through.

Are you aware that you got the 1982 firebjrd with the modified body that made it K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider? The Hood is the same, as is the front bumper. So you are moreless required to paint it black and give it the scanner running lights ;) Cheers! Awesome Work man!

Hey! I have absolutely 0 experience in this field, but I just wanted to suggest that you look into Nerf replacement motors. There's a surprisingly large community for modding Nerf blasters and they've even started custom making electric motors. You can get some really good quality 2S and 3S motors in 130, 132, and 180 sizes. Carbon brushes, neodymium magnets, the whole bit.

The axle components and gears were made on a Formlabs Form 2 which is a higher end machine. I'm surprised it was able to print the gears being so small. I knew these printers were good but I didn't know they are that good.

Thanks for catching that word error. Mini z's are cool, I own/race several but they are expensive, and their performance and appearance is very unrealistic (at least chassis/drivetrain, the bodies look good). I really like doing custom builds and making my own parts as opposed to buying a RTR vehicle, it's tricky and this build could end up flopping, but I really enjoy the challenge and engineering involved with a build like this.

Thank you for subscribing! The rear axle is custom. I plan on selling them in the future, however they are too small for a 1/18 scale car. Not sure what the best components for a 1/18 scale would be. I've never built an RC vehicle in that scale before.

China... You'll have to wait a little, but you can certainly find them and for cheap. Worst case buy a donor car in the appropriate scale, which again, can be had for extremely cheap, probably cheaper than this entire build with a decent receiver/transmitter and battery that could all be transferred to the chassis of your choice if so desired

Looking at the rear wing the one body you have is a 91 formula firebird. The v6 body skirts and bumper variants for the firebird are awesome and I'd take a look at those to keep it #scaleasshit. And larger fender flares can never hurt

I've always wanted to do something like this! Though I've had micro RS4 back in the day and played around with that. Also had the RadioShack XMods as well with all possible modifications. The detail you can get with models combined with a powerful RC setup sounds great

You can remove the paint on the body with spray on oven cleaner . It won't hurt the plastic . I'd paint the car white with satin black accents .

Leave the body primer and distress it to make it look like a real drift missile. Add scale stickers, bash bar, etc.

I did this with a large scale diecast 74 chevy vega model. I put 2 mini blender motors in it an a cd player motor on the steering. I also put a wheel to each rear motor to see what i could make an to my surprise i was drifting a diecast vega around the dirt bicycle track at the house i grew up in.

I liked my 91 Firebird, but the Automatic and the 6cyl engine, weren't that desirable. Leaks are always a problem with these cars, as the t-tops always fail, leaving a swimming pool in the spare tire compartment. As a model, I built that model in 1992. I have however, drifted my firebird around a corner... The tires lost their bite on the asphalt.

Your info on the Firebird shocked me. The auto shop at my school has a 1991 Firebird with a manual and either a 305 or 350 small block. It was donated after falling off the assembly line and GM wasn’t allowed to sell it. It was repaired by GM and only has 10 miles on it. It might be worth something.

Neat. Reminds me of my auto shop class in high school. The school was near a large GM plant that assembled trucks/SUV's. Trucks that came off the line defective or ones used for testing were donated to nearby schools. It was cool because some of these trucks were well over 30 years old but sill looked brand new.

Do you do commissions, suggestions, or only your own thing? If you are open to ideas, I have seen drifters use the 89-95 MN12 chassis, also known as Thunderbird SC, quite well. The real thing is independent rear, 5-speed manual, 3.8L of factory supercharged V6 RWD. A link to see one in action is below. One could find Revell models on ebay for close to $15. I only mention this in case you run out of ideas. Enjoy! Just to say... squirt some 3n1 oil in the crankcase through the crack then fix the crack with some baking soda and super glue by mixing them together. Don't know why I haven't seen this video til now but better late than never :) As for the body I think I would have chopped the windshield about 1/8" ish just to give it a meaner look... moving on to the next video.

Love this channel. Need your help with something. I keep going to second hand stores and I always see beautiful RC cars and trucks for dirt cheap. I would love to be able to have the cars and trucks up and running for my nieces and nephews and me and my brothers. The problem: None of them have the controller. What do you suggest I do if I want to construct universal controllers with frequency adjustment that I can use to put life back into these RC cars and trucks?

Prerunner is progressing but I need to do some painting which is difficult due to the cold weather, I think next step is to design the fender flares/ bed side pieces. I was thinking of adding side pipes, or side exiting exhaust as well. I'd be easy to build, no worry's about interfering with axle and I think it would look sick! Thanks for the comment.

Do it right and start with a model kit. Then it'd be easy to hide the motor in the engine. Where did you get a half assembled model car anyway? Also, decide what you are building. Is it a scale model for a curio shelf or r/c car for play? If it's more r/c car than model just put a piece of cardboard on the sidewalk and spray paint the parts. You can do it inside too it just requires more cardboard. You're perfectly safe spray painting that much indoors even if you were in a closet.

Powerful v8 in a f body. Hahahhahahha. After teardown, rebuild with upgrade. If its not a 307. Pos motor. At that point buy a 327, 350 or 454.

Firebirds aren't ideal for drifting, because back in 1984 they're made for the "Foundation" to crush walls and jump high using turbo boost 😉

For the motor and /esc/reciever unit, use the 8000kv brushless from the Carisma GT24B. Perfect scale and god damn it has power!

Fender flares would be sick, especially if you build custom one piece louvers and a chin spoiler for the front.

The firebird was built for scca racing and other things so it had enough frame strength to go around the tracks, Not drifting, there were plenty of manual cars running around. If you had a motor with more torque then you had to fabricate something, I used bed frame rails. Car has been running in the 9’s with no issues.

I know right, the body and interior looked kind of junky but the undercarriage/chassis looked great, almost felt bad tearing it apart. Not sure how scale I'll be able to make the engine bay, but I 3D printed an LS engine topper for the motor. I put a pic up on Instagram, should look pretty cool if I can pull it off.

I used to "try" to do this when I was a kid. When I was about 5 y.o. I wired up a small motor to an extension cord and it ran for about 2 seconds then exploded in my face the cool part is no one had ever taught me anything about electricity and I didnt have google to teach me lol
