If the 4 puts a little more weight in the rear, I would definately go for the 4. But the 6 is more butter, and we all like more butter.

Hi Henry! I loved the review and especially your point on how people perceive Morgans. It connected with me because I live in America and ride a '96 Triumph motorcycle. When I'm out for a ride, I get the same feeling, it only attracts smiles and positivity. Here, in the land of the maligned question, "do you have a crotch rocket or a Harley," it is noticeable how differently people look at you, not based on how quick you're going, but what you are on. I feel that Morgan, and the other classically styled brands of cars and bikes, attract positivity because they've never truly been the 'popular' choice among those who can afford them. Additionally, even though only the more knowledgeable car and bike fans can spot a Morgan or differentiate a classic Triumph from, let's say, a Harley Sportster, there is an endemic quality to them that most people understand. That is, they aren't the most practical, comfortable, reliable, and to many, the most fashionable. People just kind of, 'get that,' and, for that reason, they know that you made that purchase out of love for the vehicle, above all else. You wanted it that badly, despite your own checkbook asking you not to. Something every motorist experiences, is that people who see you have the unavoidable discussion and perception of why you own that car. Specifically speaking on 'fun' cars, are you doing it because you love to drive it, or because you love the attention that your car brings you? Owning exotic Italians, both bikes and cars, has been popular for so long now that it is an invariable fact that owning one will garner you plenty of attention and compliments. But, what if you get a Morgan? You do not get that same attention. It isn't as loud, fast, bright to the eyes, and, for most, attention grabbing. That is something else that people understand and appreciate. You put effort into choosing a car that best represents you, and what you appreciate about driving, and not a car that represents FOR you. To people on the outside, it doesn't matter if your Lamborghini or Ducati was the fulfillment of a lifetime dream and ambition, especially when blasting a backroad. The perception of those vehicles in today's world has evolved. Owning another loud Italian performance machine, while attention grabbing and nice to look at... Well, many would rather see something different and enjoy it when they do.

Thank god for a manual. I still don’t get why they didn’t develop a more “on brand” gear knob for the auto box. 🤷🏻‍♂️
@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP 4 года назад
Agreed. I've always gotten a feeling that it relates to either cost or the complexity. However the various journos have to have had similar thoughts, but no one seems to have asked Morgan about it (at least publicly or on the record) which is strange to me.
@MrGaryGG48
@MrGaryGG48 4 года назад
@@ALMX5DP I suspect the shift lever is much more "integrated" with the transmission in the auto than the manual. There's distinctly less appeal with the Morgan-Auto. To begin with, I suspect the typical Morgan buyer is attracted to the "Vintage Look" far more than the modern technology we're being bombarded with. That combination tends to clash, in my opinion. As light as the "Plus 4" is, the performance is pretty respectable with the turbo-4. At ~$20K less, it's even more appealling.

Great review. I've a 70th Anniversary model 4/4 with a Duratec engine as well as older Plus 4's ('57 and '63). All great. For me the traditional chassis car with an engine around 2 litres is just right. More power isn't needed and may cause you to come a cropper. Some people are buying the new hyper cars without the skills required to control them in poor conditions. Meantime, my very first car was a Ford engined F-type Morgan three wheeler too which you used to be able to drive at 16. I've driven them for - ouch - 50 years! I'd go with a Duratec 1.8 or 2 litre car, or the great TR engine or Crossflow in an earlier car, either on twin 40 DCOE carbs (which sound great too). Throttle bodies work well on the Duratecs...

Very nice indeed. Thank you. On your question: obviously a Plus Four.....when you roll up in one of these, like it or not, a statement has already been made, and at least it has the right gearbox (don't want to spend hours explaining the added convenience of an auto in your Morgan)....beyond this point, the law of diminishing marginal returns kicks in with a vengeance - not necessarily a central issue for Morgan customers mind you. All that being said, it would be wonderful if they sold masses of both !

Until someone comes up with a manual box for the plus six, the plus four is the one to have. As for the price, Morgan’s have been underpriced for years, the are bespoke hand built cars built by a manufacturer who has been doing it for over 100 years. Nobody bats an eyelid at some start up in shed gluing plastic cars together charging 200k but people seem to object to a proper car company like Morgan charging good money for their cars.

Just hired (May 2021) a new plus 4 for the day from Morgan. Was hoping for fantastic experience. I'm a slim guy, 6ft tall, so not excessively big. However I couldn't sit up correctly with the soft top on, and when sitting up with roof off my eye line of sight was obscured. When the soft top is on (it was a rainy day) visibility to the side is obscured and my neck was cramped over. Massively uncomfortable and can’t be endured for long. The seat back angle can’t be reclined to make more useable and comfortable. The engine, response, handling, power and external aesthetics are all fantastic, however massively sad to say that the cabin design and ergonomics let the overall car down and make it a undriveable and unbuyable for me and I suspect for a large number of people. I was so wanted this to be a great experience, but Morgan need to put the same focus and work into the cabin as they have with the rest of the car.

Once you pointed out the whistle I couldn't stop hearing it, it would really drive me mad I think! I once bought a bespoke, luthier made guitar, from a famous, highly renowned British luthier, at considerable expense, which although beautiful in sound and appearance, started to emit a high pitched but low volume squeal from the G string when strummed vigorously in certain chord shapes which I didn't notice immediately but once I did it was all I could hear, whilst playing I would listen out for it in frustration wondering if I was imagining it or not, taking it back to its 'Geppetto' I explained the issue, he couldn't hear it, perhaps due to age, as much as I could but one of his apprentices heard my issue and was in agreement, I left with a feeling of being humoured, but to his credit he agreed to try and fix the problem, so I left it with him. I got the guitar back after a couple of weeks and since it only happened sporadically I thought it was fixed but after some playing, it was back, so out of desperation I changed the construction of the strings I was using and it seemed to dull the sound until it was barely noticeable. It may in fact have fixed the problem but I was left with a maddening auricular 'phantom limb' syndrome where I would still hear its discord in the harmony of certain chords. I learned to live with it but it spoiled my relationship with the instrument and after a couple of years I had 'Geppetto' birth me a new 'boy' of whose design I was involved in from the start, having the opportunity to pick the exact pieces of wood, from a species that he hadn't used before, plucked from his vast stocks that he would use in the construction of the guitar, a fantastic and rare, not to mention prodigal experience, which did not stop him, eccentric as he was, from refusing some requests I made because they weren't to 'his tastes'. After the 6 month build-time, I picked up the guitar and to my relief there was no 'phantom limb' and I began the process of 'breaking in' the guitar. It was everything I had dreamed it would be and the sound it produced was almost piano like at times. I would take the guitar back to him every year as I used to holiday in the area and to his credit and amazing customer service he would service the guitar gratuitously , making any adjustments needed and scoffing at any additions I'd made, such as a pickup or brass bridge-pins, which he hated with a passion for some reason, he would remove them and replace with stock pins while servicing the guitar and re-install them when he was done, just to make a point! I expect the same adherence to self imposed tradition would exist at Morgan and the delightful experience of having input in the design process as close to the point of conception as possible, giving a similar feeling of ownership which cannot be achieved with picking options from a brochure, although that can also be a thrill as anyone who has specced a car before its built would attest to, being the picky type I have done this a few times in the past. It's amazing the time you can dedicate to a RU-vid post that no-one will probably read whilst you are on lockdown during a pandemic!
