New guidelines for treating obesity call for a shift in focus to the root causes rather than weight loss alone. Those root causes can include genetics, trauma and mental-health issues, according to advice by Obesity Canada and the Canadian Association of Bariatric Physicians and Surgeons.

I use to weight close to 600 pounds and tried every weight loss diet/system out there. Nothing worked. It wasn’t until I acknowledge that the weight wasn’t the problem, just a symptom of the problem and I started going inside myself to face the trauma, neglect and pain. Once I started on this road, as hard and painful as it was, I am happy to say that the weight simply evaporated for the most part on its own. Four years in, the weight is still off, the struggle is still there but my outlook towards it has changed from that of self-loathing and frustration to a sense of self-awareness, adventure and peace. Good luck and love to all for whom this is still a struggle. 💕

lol yea i drink a boat load of coffee Tim hortons or not. It's full of Calories so it help supress the hunger and gives you enough energy to get by. I also lost 70 pounds when i was poor. I can remember one time i had gone 3 days with no food and i went to my work on my day off just so i could casually grab something to eat from the break room. Even these days i'll only eat 1 meal a day at night, I don't eat Breakfest and i don't eat Lunch, I'm 6'2 200 pounds and fairly strong i work in a quarry. I find when you limit your meals it makes you more sensitive to whats on your plate. Your not gonna waste your 1 meal eating crap food so you will lean to the proteins and carbs

@@boci11 I wouldn't view GMOs as terrible things. The companies and the pesticides used in junction definitely. Apples are genetically modified from what they were. So has corn. Humans have modified food and animals for years. Genetically modified organisms doesn't necessarily mean terrible quality just less waste to get the results that we need. As a super simple example, switching nucleotides instead of ACC TAC it becomes ACG TAC and changes a protein expression to increase resistance to disease.

as a nurse I have two thoughts, yes to looking at the person as a whole, not just weight, look at the mental health issue that has driven these people to overeat. However, obese people are not healthy, they may feel as though they are fine, but it may just not caught up to them, or they don't recognize the symptoms, this is not a sign of health.

A lot of diet infotainment today focuses on a lot of data without any context, and the context is everything for nutrition and dieting. Take the recommend 2000 calorie diet that EVERYONE should adhere to... if you choose to live a more sedentary lifestyle (not that you should, but it happens), 2000 calories is a hell of a lot of food.

There are other extenuating reasons for weight gain. My weight = 24/7 care of my elderly parent topped by ten years of hypothyroidism, fatigue and muscle pain from other, more serious autoimmune diseases. We have been housebound five years. I was thin before and exercised daily. I have little ability to exercise or energy to either. Not ready to deal with my weight until after my parent passes and I want my parent to live well and feel loved for many more years. I look forward to the time when I can concentrate on my life and health but I also dread that time because I love my parent....my parent is my focus and my priority.....the only missing ingredient in my life is exercise.......without it, I gain. With exercise I have a lean body. .....not excuses just temporary reasons.

Listen, genetics, biology, blah, blah, blah. Let's look at the culture of food and how it is produced. Let's look at the fact that most junk food is advertised the same way cars, movies and other tantalizing things are advertised to us. Let's look at the fact that there is more sugar and salt, and other harmful additives in our food than ever before, and that even brands we have been buying for twenty or thirty years or more, are barely recognizable from what we once ate as kids. It is all well and good to shift the focus onto individual genetics to deflect from the causes, but when we were kids, we were far more active, and sugar was not the first or second ingredient in everything from snack foods to salad dressing. If the government wants to do so much good for Canadians, start regulating what is being put into foods, as well as putting legislation on companies who have changed their products to make them sweeter, saltier and less like food than they used to be. Start spending grant money to study that issue instead of focusing on our genetics and how we gain weight. That problem has been researched ad nauseam for twenty or thirty years, but no one is tackling the food producers and pointing a finger in their direction.

It's no secret that the causes of obesity are complex combinations of genetic, psychiatric, cultural, and socioeconomic causes. The treatments are potentially impossible. How does one alter genetic background? Psychiatric conditions are exceedingly difficult to treat often with partial response and relapse, and how do we change the socioeconomic conditions of millions? And to alter our culture of over eating? I applaud their efforts. Unfortunately, it's only the every first baby step. Obesity will be more difficult and costly to treat than any other conditions. I don't think the country is ready or has enough resources to make a dent.

"Obesity is a chronic disease... you'll need to find a treatment you can stay on, pretty much forever." A lot of interesting points in this video. Do the new guidelines outline 100% abstinence from added sugar? Sugar should be treated like the drug it is, and maybe companies should have to label their products with the dangers like tobacco companies do. Growing up in Canada (but mostly anywhere else as well) we spend a lifetime of eating sweats, junk food, chocolate etc and thinking of it as food or a "treat" rather than poison. It would be a lot easier to cut it out of everyone's diet if we were all educated on the dangers of this drug during childhood.

"pour sugar into foods to maximize $" Actually, I totally love that sugar. It is keeping me away. It makes (almost) everything taste revolting. I do realise that I seem to be an exception. "Capitalism is the problem!" There is something to be said for that. Companies, ALL companies, must make money to survive and flourish. As a consequence, no company is going to make products people don't want to buy. Abolishing capitalism would solve that... except that it has been tried. Soviet Union and communism anyone? Capitalism really is a bad system. There can be no reasonable doubt about that. The problem is that all systems that humanity has created and that we know of are bad, and the least-bad one of all happens to be capitalism.

So too is ultra-processed denuded foods children who grow up in poverty are raised on in food deserts -- these “drivers” at the top of the segment are about the individual and takes pressure off government to reign in what can be sold as foods. Sugary Breakfast cereal for example -- how are these sold as foods. We allow ingredients like HFCS and others that affect obesity.
