Who's happy the Garmin Nav is going away?

I never got one, I was warned not to. I’m just using the phone adapter. Yes I like this new screen a lot, except that I just bought a bike ! Oh well, maybe the rumours about it not coming to the GS for a while might be true. One of the reasons I didn’t go for the RT was the lack of TFT etc, so this might just sway me next time around. Really am liking my GSA though. First world issues🙄

BMW's Nav is a piece of crap. And I hate the additional "Nav Ready" contraption. They should allow the TFT to show Google Maps or Waze. I don't want BMW factory NAV. Are you listening BMW?

Never had a problem with the Navigator V or VI. Certainly not slow. Both worked just fine. However, integrating it into the dash makes sense. On the RT, unless you buy an aftermarket lock, the navigator can be removed all too easily by a casual thief. What's stone-age here is not the Garmin unit per se, but the lack of integration into the vehicle.

Adding tech is not the problem, the problem is that they are giving us the tech in drops so you have a reason to upgrade to the next one and that drives me nuts. The fact that I need to beg BMW dealers to upgrade the software on my TFT to get rid of issues with connectivity drives me nuts, I sort of understand from a dealer point of view that they don't make any money by doing so and they have a bay/computer gone for hours to do this upgrade. But still, how difficult would it be to use the phone that you already have connected to pull the updates? I'll be happy with Navi going away and yes, it would make much more sense to replace the craddle to house a phone. Also, let's not reinvent the wheel here... BMW, just give us Apple Car Play / Android Auto and be done with it!"!!

I too like the "caveman style" on my 1250RT . . . but I regret the NAV VI does not lock onto the bike ~ when the bike is parked it's noticeable heavy to carry in my pocket. Overall my smart phone is easier and faster to use for navigation tasks. If it wasn't for the fact I picked up the NAV for half price, I would have replaced the cradle on the bike for a smartphone cradle from AliExpress.

I had a 5 hour test ride on a 2020 S1000XR the other day. I found the tft screen confusing in terms of how to get to various functions. HOWEVER, I’m sure if I owned it (which I’m hoping to do early next year) I’d be able to figure it out. The visibility of the screen was first rate. There was very bright sunshine and at no point was the screen illegible. Ditching the Navigator VI and adding navigation is excellent and the obvious way to go forward.
@guywalker3087
@guywalker3087 3 года назад
if the navigator is a 600quid option, will navigation in the tft be a 6 or 700 quid option? or just an additional 800quid? I'd love to replace my k1600 with a new one or an RT, just can't afford one.
@rx72nr
@rx72nr 3 года назад
I really like the modern look that my tft and nav 6 brings to my 2019 GSAdv. BMW knows how to empty your wallet to cover that nav cradle. Add your phone to the mix and you now have 3 screens that you shouldn’t be messing around with while riding. I find myself only using the fuel gauge, speedometer and gear indicator anyway. You should be able to talk to your systems to get the features that you want and not be so distracted that you miss the rest of what the ride should be about. My older Subaru is more interactive and efficient whet it comes to connecting to multiple phones. The bike is awesome and I’m loving riding it. Hopeful the things will get better with the electronics. It would be nice if your phone was your dash and your bike was interactive through it. One device for everything.

As exciting as new tech always is to me, I moan over the thought of a second wave coming of “tacked on tablets” as it seems we’re finally coming over that phase within the car industry. If motorcycle designers can integrate these new, larger displays into the design rather than what they’re currently doing on the F900R and R1250R then bring it on! I have the F900r and love the display and also love the look of the bike, but, just not together.

I like the dash on the RT/ K bikes. I like being able to upgrade my sat Nav if I want to. I don’t like the idea of app controlled navigation. I think there is just too much tech going on to these bikes. Yes some tech but there has to be a limit before it gets too much.
@dgbrownnt
@dgbrownnt 3 года назад
I love the TFT on the current bikes, and it is a stark comparison when sitting next to the Nav VI (the TFT screen is just so much better). I have three trepidations with using the phone-based nav, though. A. Pairing. While the app is amazing, pairing sucks. Some days I just have to sit there for 30 seconds and wait (since it stops trying to pair once the bike is running). Today, if I'm in a hurry, it's fine to skip pairing (I just miss recording the trip and the speed limit signs). But it would suck to also lose the ability to have a map up. B. Battery. If I need to have my phone paired for GPS, it means I need to keep my phone powered. Right now it's usually in a pocket or bag since I don't like having it mounted. I actually wouldn't mind having a cubby or holder that's out of the way like some bigger bikes (and my Vespa...) to keep the phone charged and out of the way. Bonus if it also served as an additional wired connection method (though I'd love to have wireless charging). C. Maps. Right now I have all the maps I'd ever need loaded into my Nav VI. Of course I need to update them every year or so, but I'm never worried about not having a map if I'm outside of cell phone range (which, if I'm riding, is half the point). I would imagine you can preload them, but it's going to be (using preloaded maps in other apps has always had issues for me).

Have a R1200RT with the Garmin. I don’t use it much. Just on longer rides or needing to go through towns, etc. Find it too much of a faff despite that it does work very well with the bike. Tried a GS last year with the TFT and was quite impressed. TFT on the RT would be ideal for me with me phone connected as a GPS.

With a tesla you can set a destination with apple maps or google maps or whatever and share it to the car, so when you get in it is already set to navigate to wherever you set it. Older non-Tft GS instantaneously looks dated (some ppl want to update) and the tft dash is now an extra on new bikes where the clocks where previously standard equipment. So it’s a double whammy basically. As to practicality , only long term use will show since bikes are generally exposed to weather and electronics don’t like moisture and overheat.

Well said. I have to shrug every time I hear about all these new cellular based apps and navigation aids, as here in the Australian outback (let alone East Bumble!), as with many places in the world which the GS Adventure (in my case) is supposed to be built to adventure in, cellular is non-existent. If you don't have satellite (and/or proper paper maps) you're lost, and that has a tendency to be deadly out here. I thought he said that the new TFT on the RT will NOT be a touch screen, and you have to use the phone app to control the NAV. That is not easy, to operate the phone while it is tucked away in the wireless charging compartment while driving. I often use the touch screen to just hit the go home button or enter an address or destination with a glove friendly Garmin GPS touch screen. I have the Apple Car play on my Goldwing without touch screen, and it is a pain to use. Carplay, Dave, carplay! As slow as Garmin units are, they still provide great navigation, GPX track support, map packs and other good things which most manufacturers’ proprietary mapping “tools” and apps do not. So just add Carplay and be done with it! I don’t want another routing app!

GPX track support is the MOST important point for the new Display. Without it this isn’t an upgrade form the current setup.

Love that new screen. Unfortunately, high tech will only become more and more prevalent in every thing we do, cars, M/C, houses, our jobs, etc., so no sense fighting it!

I just want to mount my phone on the dash in a wireless charger protected from rain. That's it. I don't need anything else. Garmin : ))) I never really understood why you have a TFT screen and then you mount a Garmin on the top.

Leave it to BMW. Haven’t bought a new bike in years drifted from the boxer (four previous versions) I had, to KTM. Working on them was easy Peezy. Loved the new boxer engine for 2020 so I bought an R 1250R. Working on them is a nightmare. Changing the handlebars is an all day affair. Oh, and the flatter handlebars (HP/sport version)for the R 1250R $350! Hello eBay. Thought I was getting the lean angle graphic, brakes, dial tachometer as shown in many videos. Nope! Didn’t spend that extra 1500 bucks not realizing the screens were different. No worries maybe just a download. Nope, wrong again. You have to buy a whole new screen! Even though my bike has all the IMU’s. WTF? First thing to come off of it was the navigation cradle. I use the BMW app in my phone.

More tech, more electronics, more headaches when it breakdowns! What they should look is a way to reduce the weight of the bike, which turns away so many potential buyers!!
