I have the honor to be married to a gentleman who was on site, for Katrina. He came to NY on business in late September, 2005 and we met and became friends. Married in 2008. Now that my family caregiving tasks are complete, we will be moving back to NOLA next year. (I'm the newbie, Ric lived on Jackson Sq in the Pontalba for 35+ years pre Katrina). Your wonderful road trip vids are part of my 'research'. I feel as if I am up in the passenger seat next to you, looking out over the city. It is just a delightful, and very realistic way to introduce myself to my future home. And thank you!!!

I’ve only been to New Orleans twice but had fun both times. My favorite time was when I went to the French quarter with my friends who lived in the quarter on Halloween. We had so much fun! The food we hit one night at dinner was great. Blackened fish in a hole in the wall type restaurant. Not fancy but delicious food.

OK, here's the deal: In early July, in NYC, Ric and I packed Betsy, our trusty Honda van, and after my living in downtown Gotham for over 44 years, we left NY, heading South. Motoring through seven states, taking our time (hurricane Barry was never far away). Stopped for three days in Biloxi to wait out the worst of the storm. NOLA administrative offices/our building managers had shut down for safety's sake; but on that following Monday we came at last, into the city, overjoyed to be here. The funny thing was, as we drove down the street, and I spotted the transformed Jax Brewery, I said to Ric, "Gee, hon...I feel like I've been here before!!" He just smiled. We are now settling in, on Jackson Square. Our new place - the top floor (attic) at the Pontalba, where hubby lived, for thirty years pre-Katrina. I am delighted, and so much of it feels familiar. I am slowly learning how to 'roule my bon temps' (sp??) Because the Easy is that friendly a place for a stranger like me to disembark. Your great vids were terrific 'homework and prep"..thanks, dude!!!

I’m going next week to New Orleans for 5 days by myself. I’m actually driving in, staying on St Louis Street and parking my car. This video gave me a sense of what it’s like driving into the quarter to my hotel. As a woman alone I was a bit nervous however seeing this helped. If anyone knows...how necessary is it to make reservations anywhere in the quarter?
@504RoadTrips
@504RoadTrips 3 года назад
In normal times, most restaurants would require reservations. Especially the more expensive ones. However, during COVID, I’m not sure which restaurants are even open or doing indoor seating. The lockdown is different within the city limits of New Orleans and much more restrictive. Call well in advance to any places you may want to eat and find out what their seating situation is.

All of the roadcam videos for the last year or more have been filmed with a GoPro Hero 5 Black. Prior to that, they were mostly a BlackBox G1W Dashcam. We typically mount the GoPro to the inside of the Windshield, and I have a CPL (polarizing) filter that tunes out most of the windshield glare. We also have a black felt dash cover to further eliminate glare. Anything done outside the car is usually done with an iPhone, sometimes with a DJI gimbal. Everything added in like the highway shields, signs, and street names are vector illustrations created with CorelDraw and added in post.

I can honestly say that I've never driven or walked down Orleans in the Quarter. Interesting video. Do you know why is the LA Supreme Court in New Orleans and not Baton Rouge?
@504RoadTrips
@504RoadTrips 2 года назад
Just a guess, but the history of the Louisiana Supreme Court in New Orleans dates back to 1804. When Louisiana became a state in 1812, New Orleans was the third largest city in the United States. It has always been the largest city in Louisiana. New Orleans was the capital of the Louisiana Territory for decades, and remained the State Capital until 1846. They moved the capital to Baton Rouge to get it further inland where it wouldn't be as susceptible to tropical storms. But maybe they thought it would be better to keep the court in New Orleans where most of the population of the state lived...Baton Rouge was a small town of around 2,000 residents back then.

I fell in love with The French Quarter in about 2003 and have been spending time there ever since. In fact, I'll be going there fore a week later this month. You did a good job with this video with two exceptions, in my opinion. First, you insulted the Quarter at the very beginning with your comment about it smelling. I have never noticed the French Quarter smelling bad. Sure, it might smell bad late at night on Bourbon Street where a dunk threw up but I've never experiened that. You remark was really uncalled for and untrue and would lead someone who has never been there to think it stinks in the Quarter. Second, you could have edited out long waits in traffic when you weren't moving and weren't commenting. That was just wasted time. Respect the time of your viewers.
