The Sensitones are truly sleeper drums. And they're so reasonably priced compared to other offerings that have essentially the same components. A great value for anyone looking to get into a pro-sounding snare for hobbyist prices.

I got my first sensitone when it came with a kit from Pearl I ordered. I didn’t have high hopes for it. It came with the kit so figured it would stay on my teaching set. When I played it the first time it went on every gig I had for a long time. Every time a student said they wanted a new snare or an upgrade I always sent them to the sensitones first because the price to performance couldn’t be touched.

Best video ever comparing the three different shell materials! My takeaway was that the 14x5 brass shell has the brightness off steel, the controlled sound of aluminum, and yet retains the rich complexity of brass. That was my overall favorite for general purpose playing. I am now eager to get one of each to have more options available to serve the different music styles I play. Thank you for the video. It had a huge impact on me by building on concepts that I was already intimately familiar with. Sensitones are highly underrated. Extremely musical snares!

@@thomasnussbaum4711 my favourite snare was a battered old 5.5" gretsch COB i paid £20 for. but because it needed a lot of work i really made sure i restored it correctly, with the most suitable parts, skins, wires etc. if i'd got it new i wouldn't have done that, it wouldn't have sounded as good & i wouldn't have had that sympathetic connection to it. it ended up a proper road warrior too, very tough & versatile snare. earned me a LOT of money.

@@thomasnussbaum4711 true. tbf i just knew it was gonna be a good 1 cos the quality shone thru under all the mess. gretsch COBs don't get a lotta love but man that drum could do anything with a bit of tweaking & never gave me a second of trouble on the road. just as good was a 1980s tama superstar 6.5" maple i had, not as versatile as the gretsch but built like a tank & had a FAT rimshot, cut thru a rock/dance mix like butter. same model neil peart played on 'spirit of radio' but a deeper shell iirc? never had to use any head but a standard coated ambassador on it either, it just fkn testified every night without fail. other drummers used to sneer at me for using a japanese snare back then but fk em cos it was a monster & a good backbeat is what earns your corn. so i always trusted my ears & watched how the audience reacted & that tama got em out their seats. so did my knackered old gretsch tbf lol! from my side all the adulation ludwig gets is crazy, cos i never owned 1 in my entire career & when i borrowed em they were a massive pain in the ass tbh, maintenance nightmares & finicky af. like, literally they would fall apart as you played em lol!

Some of THE best snare drums ever made, in my professional opinion. My #1 go-to snare, since I bought it 21 years ago, is a Pearl Brass Sensitone 5.5 x 14. Really can't say enough about it. I too was sad when they discontinued them, but now, I see one of the Heritage snares in my near future. ;) They ALL sound great soooo..... decisions, decisions. Great demo as usual Shane. :)

as a gigging drummer starting back in the 80s, pearl were always my favourite japanese brand. their hardware was a godsend cos it was cheap & just worked when all my expensive UK/US stuff broke all the time, then their bass/toms got superb when they brought out 'power' sizes (even the original cheapo pearl exports sounded fantastic if you put good skins on em, & you could just throw em in the back of the van without cases they were so tough lol), finally they came out with this range of idiot-proof workhorse snares. i mean really, how can you make that 5.5" aluminium sound bad ffs you'd have to be mental? if you been on the road much you know pearl don't let you down.

If you try looking up old Sensitone snares you'll notice that the names on the badge are different. They did the same thing in 2014 versions-- you had the Sensitone Heritage Alloy consisting of Steel, Aluminum and Brass, and the Sensitone Premiums consisting of the 1.5mm Patina Brass, Phosphor Bronze, Maple and African Mahogany.

The 3 different drums are all the same ! and i mean first the Elite, Sensitone, and now heritage, there all the same, except the imperial lugs and cheaper throw off !

5.5" aluminium sensitone is a stone cold dead cert future classic. idiot-proof snare drum, imagine how hard you'd have to try to make it sound bad lol.

For a drum store selling drums that would be a killer move, am I right? Maybe they just try to sell you drums like a business does, wouldn't that be crazy?
