I honestly appreciate how Riptide was glowing in the shots with Percy facing the Minotaur, because if I remember correctly, the sword had a glow to it, being made of Celestial Bronze.
Riptide being a capped pen works better for multiple reasons. Most importantly, the cap is like a sword's sheath, which adds to the metaphor. Secondly, we later learn that putting the cap to the hilt can turn it into an actual functional pen, which you just couldn't do with a clicky pen.
@@lcc2348 First, I don't think there was an indication for it in the movies but I'm pretty sure that there's probably a way for Percy to turn his sword back into a pen. Second, if it's a pen that can click then I'm pretty sure there may indention on the pen. That way Percy could press that and it can return back into its normal form without anyone noticing what it was. Third, if you have to click it to turn it into a sword. I'm pretty sure there's a way to reverse the effect to turn it back into a writing utensil lmao. False, because wouldn't it make sense for you to do the exact same thing that you did to turn it into a sword but to turn it back into a pen? Fifth, I did like that change in the movie however, I disliked most of the movie only because of how the director directed the movies. If you paid attention to the movie you would know that everyone in the movie new Percy was a son of Poseidon except for him. Sixth, I'm curious on someone's explanation on how that makes sense when he never knew who his father was until he got to Camp Half-Blood.
What if Rick decided to change the story and have Alecto (the Fury) attack outside so that the viewers (who havent read the books) are introduced to the Mist?
Yes I was thinking the same thing. Ofc a few things will change but I don’t mind as long as they are true to most of the story 😀 I can’t wait. IT LOOKS AMAZHANG
I was confused about the Mrs Dodds scene, because from what I remember, she only changed in front of Percy when they were in the museum alone, whereas in these shots, it looks like people are around them. But that makes so much sense, and honestly, that would be a really good change, and a great way to explain the Mist!
@@AhsokaGryffindor i mean one piece changed a few things from the original manga/anime and look how that turned out, i'm so ok with a few changes. IM SO EXCITED
I recognized so much of this. 1# The scene where Grover came to Percy and Mrs Jackson 2# Ares is shown about more here which I’m hyped for 3# The Half Bloods that attacked Percy could be Clarrisse and her gang. 4# Interesting enough they haven’t shown us Luke yet.
I'm going to continue rewatching the trailer until it reaches a million views maybe even a billion!! Percy Jackson fans including myself have waited too long for a faithful adaptation and I want to do my part as a massive fan to make sure this show does well!!! I can't even begin to describe my hype for this show!! December please come quickly!! 🙏😩😍
This is what happens when you listen to the creators, one piece live action proved it and this one is gonna prove it too, lowkey scared for avatar cause the creators left the project because of creative differences
Oh yes they totally listen to him a little bit too hard because he changed everything is sold out to the corporations just so his book can get adapted and changed all the characters for no reason
@@wolfbane7497 as long as the characters are still who they are in the books at their core idc how they look🤷🏽♂️ I mean I wish we would’ve got book accurate actors but it didn’t happened so I don’t mind them here like this as long as they are the characters not that piece of shit of a movie well 2 but they are piles of garb not movies so 😂🤷🏽♂️
@@wolfbane7497They were cast because they embodied the characters the best Rick said, so I think it’ll be easy to imagine them as the characters after seeing them in action/their personality. I’d honestly rather want actors who are talented and knows how to play the characters, than bad actors who can’t play the characters but look more accurate (it’s impossible to get them that accurate too cuz it’s rare with grey eyes and green eyes and they can’t have contacts. And wigs or dying hair is not good for the kids. But if it helps, I see that Walker gets darker hair as he ages, like many blonde people do, so maybe he has much darker hair in the end). And Annabeth and Grover already looks like 1000000x better compared to the movies version, in the movies Annebeth was almost an airhead and Clarisse was more like Annabeth, and Grover was more confident and funny guy, but in this adaptation we see Grover look like the nervous bullied sweet kid he was described in the book, and Annabeth seems more like her personality in the way she stands tough and looks at Percy curiously and how she interacts with him.
It looks like the first shot of Percy falling, is how it looks through the mist, he just falls, but then we see he’s actually being attacked by Alecto.
Something important to mention is that 12 hours after this this was released it has 1.2 million views, compared to the trailer that had 800k views in a month that you were worried about. Hopefully this shows that the series is gaining traction in the mainstream. 👍
Yes, that shot with annabeth and the tall wrapped figure i believe is the underworld. Specifically, the field of asphodel. Because if you remember in the book, Percy mentions stunted black trees dotted around the field, which Grover identifies as poplars, which we see several trees like that in that shot, as well as the mist and darkness and crowded nature described of the field
Harry Potter does not need a frickin remake. Nothing but a big cash grab. The movies were already perfect. The funny part is I remember in Twitter how the guy who basically runs Max said they don't do remakes and dissed them, then they turn around and make a Harry Potter remake.
I liked the look of the click-pen, but with Riordan in charge, he knows that much, much later, Annabeth figures out how to use Riptide as a pen, by putting the cap on the hilt instead of just throwing it away. At least I assume that's what he has in mind.
Another of the reason is that the cap is what turns the sword back to a pen, having a click pen doesn't make sense because there is no way to turn back Anaklusmos to a pen
Lance is Riordan's best casting choice for the show in my opinion. I personally had Josh Brolin as my choice for Zeus, but Lance is fantastic as well. Honestly the only god casting choice I don't like is Jay Duplass as Hades. He comes off as a goofball not the lord of the dead. A much better option for Hades would have been Walton Goggins.
@@brmawe hopefully not, Percy beating the god of war in combat at age 12 was like a major thing in the book. And its what gets Zoe killed in Titans Curse
The movie also had Percy face the Minotaur while still having the sword but he dropped it and ended up killing it with the horn just like the book. Maybe the show will do the same thing.
@@wolfbane7497Who cares? It truly doesn't matter as long as the actors who the Author of the books and Writer/Director of the show thinks they are the best picks.
@@movielover7565 it does matter because you're adapting your book your story and you should stick to your guns about. what the character look like and how they should be portrayed not change things willy-nilly and be a sell-out. You wrote the book so obviously you had a lot of time to think about. What your characters wanted to look like how they move how they think everything. And that should be preserved and adapted to the film not changed to suit whatever the studio should feel. If they're willing to change the nationalities of the characters it makes me. Skeptical of what else they change yeah the trailer looks good all trailers look good. They're supposed to look good to entice you to watch the show but a good trailer can also reveal a terrible show. And the fact that Rick Riordan commissioned art official art that he put in his data books. About the characters of what they supposed to look like and how he blatantly went against his own source material. To sell out to the studios just so they would make his show I don't respect. Rick Riordan because he sell out he didn't stick by what he wrote and he didn't stick by his story.
@@wolfbane7497 no it really doesn't. They were chosen because they embodied the character way more then the others who auditioned. Looks aren't what makes the characters good. It's the writing and performance.
3:12 I’m pretty sure that this shot is shortly before Mrs Dodds attacks Percy. Notice how everyone else is focused on something to the right offscreen, which likely is Nancy in the fountain. Also, she probably chose to attack him outside in this adaptation because the mist would hide the encounter anyways, and whatever the people around saw would have made him have a bigger reason to believe that he was imagining things
Another insight is that unlike the previous trailer, this one got over 1.1 Million views in less than a day! Definitely sticks that more content = more views. The previous trailer was pretty short and lacking, but now that we get to see more details of the show, more people are gonna want to watch it!
0:50 fun fact: riordan explicitly didn't mention any dates in the books, because he thought that it will allow people to think of it as 'present day' even after decades have passed
He does though. In the titans curse, they ask Bianca what the last president of the US was, and she says FDR. They tell her that was about 70 years ago. That dates the books to a time period. Plus, we know Hazel, Bianca, and Nico are characters that transcend time. In a few years it'll be very obvious how dated the books are based on the descriptions of when they were first alive to the Time period they traveled to and the differences. The books are indeed set in a certain time period
@yoru8815 exactly! Not mentioning tomes doesn't matter, cause of the Reference he uses to older tech, time skips, era Reference, etc. It's obvious when it's set in
I would like to point out the new trailer has been out 7 hours and over 600k views, which is almost as much as the last trailer which has been out for months
So excited for this show since according to the trailers it’s going to be accurate to the books as possible and after reading the books I am excited to binge this on Christmas 🎉
I think this show shows tremendous potential. It's probably silly, but there is a scene from the book that I hope makes it to the show. I always found the scene where the 3 of them hitch a ride with these random animals. There was (I think) a lion, an antelope, and a zebra. Plus their food was given to the wrong animals. It was a scene that always stuck out to me. I love the content! Keep up the amazing work, and have a great day!!!
I think giving Percy Riptide to fight the Minatour makes a lot of sense. He often felt a little overpowered, and when so many trained halfbloods die fighting monsters, it always felt a little hard to believe he could take down a Minatour with his bare hands. Him having a weapon doesn't take away from his achievement because it shows how skilled he is even without any training, but it does make it easier to believe. That being said, it's possible he drops Riptide or loses it and has to fight with only himself but I don't think they would give Riptide to him early if it doesn't end up being pivotal to his success.
But isn’t that kinda the whole point??? To show that he was overpowered because of his lineage??? Hell in the books, rick riordan always emphasize about the BIG THREE like they’re on a different spectrum than anyone else so of course their children will also be on a different level than anyone. Nico only been in the demigod world for 3 years and he’s already the best of the best, same as hazel
@merlinrecon7528 Kind of, but I always read it as more specific to their powers. Nico trained with some really dangerous people so it makes sense he would become really good with a sword but also his sword taps into his abilities so that has to contribute in some way. The Big Three kids always have crazy skills and strength but it always seems to be relating to their powers rather than physical strength. At least in my mind, I can't remember how specific the books get. I just feel like Percy having his sword with the Minatour makes for a more grounded start to his story. I'm not actively against him winning the same way he does in the books though, it's more of a personal preference, I guess.
@@jjdracula I mean nico’s strength isn’t really with his sword, it’s always with his underworld power. I’m not saying nico swordman is bad but it’s not really comparable to some of the best weapon master in the books (percy, jason, annabeth, thalia, and clarisse). What I’m talking about is how in just 3 short years his power has grown to the level that the fandom always puts him in the top 3 strongest demigod with him and percy interchangeable in the rankings. Because the fact is big three kids are just given unfair advantage of power that has only ever been rival by immortal, another big three kids, or piper (tho piper charmspeak kinda smell like plot mcguffin). I mean the fact that clarisse with blessing of ares still took down way less monster than percy with curse of achillies should’ve told you about how broken the big three kids power are. Hell it’s one of the main reason that they use the world war as an excuse to have the oath because their kids are too destructive
I went to the Saint Luis Arch this past summer and there’s no way that Percy fell into the river from the arch. It’s farther away than I thought it would be. He would splat onto the ground and the series would end lol
Luckily, his dad is the god of the seas and in the book his dad actually sends a Neried to help him, so I’m thinking they might have the water kind of “grab” Percy and drag him into the water
i think they made it history class in the show because its ACTUAL history, percy just doesnt know it yet (it'd actually be really cool if there's a line like "why is this in history class if it didn't even happen")
11:13 I like how it is in the books and show the cap is basically a Riptide's scabbard and how would you turn it back if it's a click pen Also anyone else imagine Riptide as a fancy wooden pen even those it's described as a cheap disposable one
but riptide transforms fully into a sword, and when the cap came into contact with the tip of the sword it turned back. where would the click part be on the sword if it was a click pen?@@heyimjaytee
riptide being a capped pen and not a click pen isn't just a design choice - it is plot relevant, as it used in House of Hades (Heroes of Olympus #4) to write a message from tartarus back to camp half-blood by putting the cap on the back of the sword, reverting it back into a pen. this cannot be done with a click pen, and I am glad that this keeps the possibility for an on-screen adaptation of Heroes of Olympus with no need to change anything.
Reddick is my favorite casting in this show by far, absolutely brilliant choice. However, I am not a fan of the Jay Duplass as Hades choice. I don't recall Hades being gleefully evil in the book, I thought he was more cold and cunning. Duplass fits King Minos a lot better in my opinion. Walton Goggins would have been a better choice for Hades.
I hadn't watch the trailer yet but thank you so much for breaking it down! My twin sister and I are both eagerly awaiting! I never saw the sucky movies so when I finally read the series I was shocked. But I've to say the books were amazing! My sister actually used the books as a plot device in one of her Ladybug fanfics having Marinette's class read them. So again, we're both super excited to see the series. I also still believe you should do some videos about Rick's other books. Like Magus Chase, Kane Chrnoicals, Trials of Apollo. Plus some of the Rick Ridordan present books. Like Aru Sha and Dragon Pearl which are the only ones I've read so far! So please I'm begging you finally do the other Rick books! And again the Life of Nico De Angelo! Thank you!
One big problem I had with the click pen RipTide, other than the fact that it wasn’t book accurate, was the fact that if Percy doesn’t move his finger faster enough, he would lose a thumb.
@charliecomer6001 yeah, the pun was indeed intentional. These books got me through some rough times, I am forever thankful for Rick Riordan and all his characters and stories. They even helped me with my own writing.
Love this video! I always appreciate the time and effort you put into making these. If you have time, I’d love to see you breakdown the newest Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes trailer!!
After seeing movies 1 and 2 (which were an absolute disapointment; 1 because there was no Ares, and in the 2nd movie I wanted to see Percy turn into a guinea pig XD) The TV series looks INCREDIBLE! It's so satisfying when they actually stick to the original books plot. And his voice is EXACTLY how I imagined it while reading the book! Can't wait to see it!
I have a theory for Riptide in the Minotaur scene based on other comments. After the fight with Mrs. Dodds. Percy gives the pen back to Chiron/Mr. Brunner, but because Riptide chose him, it always returns to him. He accidentally finds it in his pocket during the Minotaur fight, but due to not having sword training he loses it. That makes Percy brawl bare hands the Minotaur’s horn off. Later on, Chiron explains Riptide to Percy. That’s my theory. I think Rick Riordan said that the tv show is a good way of adding in some stuff for plot holes he accidentally made in the books. Just like the Gateway Arch, when he wrote it, he though the Mississippi River was under the Arch, but was miles away. I think what they’ll do on the show to fix that like in the graphic novel, is when Percy falls off the Arch, Grover uses the flying shoes that Luke gave to them to catch Percy. But accidentally drops him into the Mississippi River.
Appreciate your breakdown, its definately upped my excitement for the series now. Although the film adaptations were so different to the books, am gunna miss the original cast but the new cast do look amazing. Will you also be doing a breakdown for the new Hunger Games trailer when it drops?
Thanks for covering this! And rest assured, while the original trailer for this series came out a month ago and only got about 700k+ (from when I checked yesterday), the newest trailer has gotten 1.9M views so far within just a day’s time! Hopefully it keeps getting some more traction, and Disney will see that people are legitimately super interested in the series
While I am disappointed that the physical descriptions of the characters were negated, I also have to give credit to where credit is due. The trailer itself is absolutely fantastic. Brilliant soundtrack, love Lance Reddick, love the layout of Camp Halfblood, and Meghan Mullally as Ms.Dodds looked amazing. My only issue is Jay Duplass as Hades, I think he was miscast, but I'am sure the adaptation will be a fun ride regardless.
YES! I too am disappointed with the negating of the character descriptions. I think Jay Duplass is the least of our problems, though he could have been a bit more Ozzy Osbourne :)
Yeah the appearances really bothered me. They were also really easy fixes. Colored contacts (Annabeths gray eyes ;-;) and temporary black dye won't damage them
@@filip_aleksander_moen I just don't recall Hades being gleefully evil and cheerful which is how Duplass plays him in the trailer. I thought he was cold and cunning, they probably didnt have the budget to afford him (at least not yet) but Mads Mikkelson would have been perfection. Another great option would have been the immensely talented Walton Goggins. I think Duplass fits King Minos better.
Yes it just seemed silly to me to not go all in on the characters. Anything less than perfection seems like a disservice to the characters. Walker with a black wig and green eyes (through cgi not contacts) would have been amazing. @@tea_b4052
I never read persy jackson books even though i have access to them trough school library, but after watching your videos on this it seem fun i am sucker for great world building fantasy stories
I actually prefer the capped pen over the click pen. For or one taking off the cap is kind of like taking a sword out of a sheath, and with the cap you can easily set it back to pen form by touching the cap to the end of the blade or to the bottom to write with it (Like he did in House of Hades). Meanwhile the click pen has a few logistical flaws, namely the blade coming out of the part that you click. So you’ve gotta quickly move your thumb as to not stab it and it’s kinda stuck in pen form because you can’t click the end of the blade
As someone who has read all the percy Jackson and heroes of olympus books, I'm hoping that they get it right this time! The last movies was a failure so I hope this show does good! What streaming website would it be on? I hope it would be on Disney+ or Netflix!
11:49 To be fair, the sword makes more sense lol. It would be a bit weird if a 13 year old kid could take down a Minotaur with his bare hands, Demigod or not. It was also make it feel like all of his battles after that should be just as easy.
Bro, a normal thirteen year old kid can't do that sure. But these are demigods, and they're waaay stronger and tougher. Personally, I'm a bit worried that we won't really get a sense for how powerful they are like in the books, and I'm hoping demigod fights don't play by normal human rules. I mean, the trailer looks really good, and I'm super stoked, just worried everybody's going to be fighting with normal human speed and strength. Where's the speed that blocks bullets with a sword? The strength that can rip a horn from a monsters head? Hopefully he actually loses the sword in the fight and it can go the way it went in the books.
Ive always been a huge fan of Rick Riordan and his ability to connect readers with all his characters throughout all of his mythological stories. From the entirety of the hero’s of Olympus, to the Kane sibling’s story arc, and now with the story of Magnus Chase. He’s been able to draw in a huge fan base consisting of long time mythology experts, and people just getting into learning about the different world wide mythologies. To see another producer YET AGAIN disrespect the characters we’ve come to love absolutely disgusts me. No disrespect to the creator of this breakdown video, but I couldn’t even get through the first 2 minutes of this video without becoming absolutely outraged by the disrespect to Percy Jackson, and the impact his story arc has had on younger mythology fans
I dont mind if some changes are made to the show as long as rick riorden was either ok with it or the one that came up with the idea as he was the one who wrote the source material so any changes he makes will probably be for the betterment of the show
i would like chiron's coat color to be white to match his beard and contrast with his black skin, i think it would look very cool, and i would also like to see a black-skinned medusa like the one described in the first book cuz i've never seen a representation of medusa with dark skin before, i had never thought of medusa like that, but i really like the idea after reading the first percy jackson's book and i was hoping to see that in the series, but, even though medusa doesn't have dark skin in the series, im glad that she at least has a more brownish skin (since that's the skin tone of the actress who filmed as medusa for the series)
yeah, it seems like i was wrong. i checked the book and aunty Em appears to be a middle eastern woman, not a black woman as i always imagined. i think i didnt pay attention to this part when i was reading 😂. it's ok though. but i would still like to see a black medusa in some movie or tv series 🥲
@@danp_oliveira People see characters differently. When i read the books I personally imagined Eva Green as Medusa, but if you wanted a black medusa Naomie Harris would have been an amazing choice. I also hope (and i doubt it will happen) but Angela Bassett would be a fantastic Athena for Leah's Annabeth.
6:35 I think the cabin you mentioned to be Ares is actually Hades cabin because the sign you mentioned you couldn’t read was red like the Underworld. Additionally this is supported by the cabin to the right of Poseidon’s, which is Zeus’ so I think the Three cabins we see are the ones of the Big Three. The sign you said was Ares actually read Zeus because it points toward the Cabin with lightning bolts on it
Of course my boy on it QUICK. Much love morgan. So stoked for this and grateful for your coverage. Edit: not loving the hair of percy or the changes to the characters like annabeth & others… buuuut hope this isn’t too weird
I hate that they don't allow Percy to slay the minotaur with his barte hands but to be fair even in the books, he's actually using one of the minotaur's horns rather than Actually his raw physical strength
I really wish they kept the part of Percy taking down the Minotaur with its own horn. It was definitely one of my most favorite fights in the books. I'm also really interested in how they're going to have Ms Dods and Percy fightwth people around and how it willaffect the show. I also really wish they kept the donkey thing but hopefully they keep the conversation about the fates.
Someone above made a good point, which is that maybe that fight is outside to introduce the idea of the mist better, which makes sense. Also you never know, he may still end up killing him with the horn. Maybe he just has the sword for some other reason that they needed him to have it for. Always remember, in book to show adaptations often small details change for various reasons, and they can have mini ripple effect that affect other details, so maybe this is one of those. Overall, with Rick at the top I’m sure it will be as faithful as it can possibly be. I’m with you on the fates scene though, I really hope that’s in there too. It’s so insanely mysterious and feels so important yet you don’t know why for so long
They very well may keep how Percy kills the Minotaur. Maybe he gets the sword knocked out of his hands and then has to use the horn. Then finds the pen in his pocket when he wakes up in CHB
I love how the title is Percy Jackson and the Olympians as supposed to being one book which means that each season would cover each book I would love to see the show cover the whole book series instead of just two of the books
