Heliod wasn't responsible for the death of Gideon's friends, while he did make Gideon his champion and sent him on a quest to stop one of Erebos' minions from wreaking havoc, (honestly like one of the few times Heliod actually fits what he supposedly stands for) it was Gideon, who became arrogant over his victory, that decided to attack Erebos himself and thus lost his friends via his own attack being thrown right back at him.

Kruphix knew about the Phyrexians long ago (he knows everything that is known to anyone in Theros), once planeswalkers who had encountered them arrived. I will be very disappointed if this did not result in any kind of plan and we just see Theros being steamrolled. I will be disappointed if the writers forgot about that Kruphix side story.

@@AetherHub To be fair, Kruphix said Theros could fall to Bolas, to the Eldrazi, and to Phyrexia. That said, as soon as each Phyrexian sets foot on the plane, Kruphix instantly knows everything they know. THAT would be one of the plot devices I'd use to counteract Phyrexia, with Theros in time becoming a focal point in the war. The longer they fight on Theros without compleating Kruphix, the worst the outcome of the war becomes for the Phyrexians. In the end they'd succeed, but not before the "Codex of Kruphix" is written and passed down throughout the Multiverse. "What could have been written in that book? Who would be able to make sense of it all? Find out in the next chapter of the Aether Hub." Pity they'll probably go for something way less elaborate, though.

He's also one of the two gods of Theros that doesn't need faith to exist. Between Kruphix and Klothys the two of them can defend the plane. Absolute worst case scenario, Kruphix can close Nyx off from the world, stoping the gods from fighting and Klothys can write the phyrexian's fate to be failure. This is where the Demigods they introduced can com in. Then the nyxborn wil come into play creatures of uncorruptable devotion, made with the purpose of stoping the Phyrexians, perhaps led by the 5 demi-gods. He also, notably, controls distance on Theros. As phyrexian armies march to the Poli, Kruphix can make their marches take months while the defenders are able to retreat nearly indefinitely.

If I had to guess, Helios was probably released from his imprisonment at Kruphix's insistence the moment the first Phyrexians stepped onto the plane. By Kruphux's own admission, Theros is doomed against Phyrexians, Bolas, and/or the Eldrazi. He'd know that they'd need every possible heavy hitter to just put up a fight for a time.

It would be really great that if and when the Phyrexians get pushed out from Theros and if Guideon's statue remains standing, somehow stories and faith in his indestructibility and endurance can give rise to a new hope like a new dawn. In turn, the devotion would cause a mirror entity of Guideon to ascend as the new Sun God of Theros. Now that would be a nice side story for Chandra and/or Elspeth to venture into to investigate during the reconstruction of Theros after the Phyrexian invasion.

I just had a nifty thought at the end of the video. What if, after the gods turned on the people, they start looking toward a hero of Theros for protection? I know it probably won't happen, but what if at some point Gideon gets revived as a god due to his stories and exploits? That was just a really cool idea I thought of at the end.

Kruphix was already terrified about Nicol Bolas and phyrexians. Considering he is the god of the unknown, he'll probably have some sort of contingency set up. Same with Erebos and Athreos hopefully. Phenax and Mogis probably not.

I grew up reading the Magic Novels and learning the stories that way. It made the cards so much more meaningful. I have seen the pile grow slower and slower through the years to the point where some sets/blocks had zero source material for me to bite into. The story of Theros is incredible and I hope wizards won't mess up returning there. Great coverage as always!

maybe i'm weird but i'm genuinely hoping march of the machine isn't the end of the phyrexian threat. i'd love to see singular sets based on the phyrexian invasion on a few planes, see how they fight and possibly lose, and then a wrap up set akin to avengers endgame.

so the planeswalkers that have been compleated so far are heading the effort to compleat the planes. Lukka might have easier time going to each major creature of the Ikoria region, further working the mutate mechanic versus humans. nissa and nahiri can destabilize zendikar or channel it into their own works of the land elementals. not sure who would be heading eldraine effort. a wildcard for later would be souls to guard planes like the guildpact did in the past.

So...if elesh norn came to Theros. She'd almost immediately be trapped in the sky of Nyx as a God because she commands the devotion of not just Theros; but billions across the multiverse. That might actually be a solution to slowing her down. Not sure if that would be good or bad, but ya know, could work. Ironically lowering her power to that of a God

I think the writers should be carefull with how far this all spreads; restrict it to a few worlds at first make worlds like theros resist it more thanks to various factors allow for some way to completely rid some of the planes of it (like a new god of purity on theros or something, hestia based white god anyone?)

While this works in theory, I still have some issues: - Norm as mother of machines coexisting with a white aligned god. - Heliod being white/blue given Gitaxias and his phyrexians are creatures of science. I feel like Heliod and Omnath are compleated for shock value without considering anything else. Some writer will fix it later.

The major gods already have 2 cards each, Heliod has 3, so if we see more gods in the set it better be the minor ones. Minus red/green cuz Xenagos was the other and Athreos also has 2 so the last 8 gods need to get a card too

I love Theros and would hate to see it end. With that said, I am surprised that they didnt play off of the devotion aspect more. Xenagos ascended because he realized devotion of followers gave the god's their power, or at least that is how I have understood it. I always thought that, should phyrexia invade, there would be a new "Phyrexian God" that would be created because of their devotion to perfection.

I'm more curious if this means we're going to get a rushed solution to all this or were going to have to deal with a few years of phyrexians in literally every set, and walkers never coming back: if the problem is solved or these walkers coming back again and again but just still evil brainwashed phyrexians. Don't need phyrexians to be the villain in every set. Whatever they do to stop Elesh Norn can cause Phyrexians to go away, but leave the Oil behind. This allows Phyrexia to show up every now and then, possibly even give these New New Phyrexians a W to showcase they are still a real threat.

This sort of is how Gods work in the Elder Scrolls too. If people worship and pray to certain gods, it increases the Gods influence in the world such that their power/magic/essence whatever can interact with Tamriel, Nirn or the Mundus more. If people DON'T then it is thought that it actually weakens the God themselves such that they are not really Gods anymore, which is a big reason why the Thalmor are SO hellbent on enforcing outlaw of Talos worship.

I don't think the phyrexians will ultimately be successful in compleating the plane unless they take out Klothys and Kruphix. With those two not being dependent on devotion, they are Theros' best hope to survive the march. It will be interesting to see if Theros' denizens can collect themselves to counteract the phyrexians fast enough to stop the compleation of other gods, or if we will have multiple gods that are compleated.

Thing is, on this card we can see that the knowledge from the compleated walker is put to use. Ajani on Theros, I can see that Nissa will have a impact on Zendikar i mean we know Omnath is compleated. So whats about Jace and Tamiyo. Both know about Emrakul. And Jace about Bolas. These are both targets for the Phyrexians. I mean we know Innistrad will play Role because of the Spoiled Cards, And Ravnica too. Question is, what do they do about it. And thats why i think this set is to short. It really is, there are so man things to consider lorewise i ear the story will be the Mother of Plotholes. i mean think about it. Heliod Compleated and Omnath these two things alone are a story or itself, i mean Omnath what does it mean for Zendikar etc, And there is not just heliod on Theros. Dont get me wrong i am hyped for this set, but Phyrexia is a Threat that is in Magic since the beginning, and i dont think 1,5 sets will do it justice. I am hyped but idk i have the ffeeling i will be disapointed kinda xD

Nice idea with polluting faith into individual god to compleat them, one of few things that wizard thought about in recent years. Still I hope that they will never reverse phyrexianization cause it would mean no consequensces from anything. Now, the thing I wonder about is what will happen when they assault Innistrad, will we see Emrakul in action? maybe phyrexianized eldrazi or eldrazed(?) phyrexian? that would be cool.

I think the Eldrazi would Corrupt the Phyrexians, it would be a really cool story about the phyrexians getting a taste of their own medicine and being corrupted into eldrazi brood

Is really Heliod still the most powerful god of Theros, though? I mean, this may just be an assumption, but after his failed coup in Beyond Death, the other god's cults more than likely revolted against his' one... I imagine Heliod's cult, right now, might be at an all-time low. Honestly, choosing the cult of Heliod is a pretty dumb move, knowing that the other gods and cults are just waiting for a reason to get beck at them. Either Karametra, Ephara or Iroas would have been a, by far, better choice. I mean... how can you oppose phyrexya with the god of VICTORY on their side? P.S. shout out to whoever wrote the D&D handbook about Theros who wrote that Heliod is LAWFUL GOOD and Pharika (you know, the goddess of medicine) as evil. Dude, Heliod is not Pelor!

Heliod is Lawful neutral at best, and chaotic neutral easily (he's Zeus). Pharika is also true neutral, since hurt or heal on a whim.

If faith and belief can alter reality itself on Theros, such as compeating a god or causing the artificially created Calix to planeswalk, whos to say belief cant completely nullify compleation on Theros?

Look at the lore on the bottom of the new heliod. The theros gods are influenced by the belief of the people. You dropping the game/lore over something so easily explained is quite funny

From a writing perspective I actually hate this. It equates all individuals faith to a pure numbers game. Implying that those with the strongest faith who need their god the most have little to no power against obvious heretics. It opens so many holes in the mythos of the plane that it completely unravels from just a tiny amount of inspection. Wouldn’t knew, weaker gods be appearing all the time? Wouldn’t the current gods personalities and styles be changing all the time? Before this point why haven’t we heard of any other fallen gods, whose flock abandoned them? Does the god not influence their flock in any way? People turn to gods for direction, a god whose whims change with the times wouldn’t exactly rake in the followers. This decision was clearly made to answer the question how would Theros be attacked, rather than what impact would this have narratively for the plane. It’s all flash, with little to no depth.

hold on, this is clever but extremely retconned...if they are converted to phyrexia wouldnt they be turned over to phyrexia instead of being devoted to Heliod, essentially forgetting him??
