Thank you for this video. My puppy sleeps next to my bed in her crate. I've read a lot of articles and had a lot of people tell me to have her in the kitchen but it just doesn't seem right at the moment. I've been worried I've been doing it wrong and going to end up with a spoilt dog but this video has reassured me I'm doing it right 😁

Our Yorkshire Terrier is 4months old we walk her at least an hour every day she will not poo or WEE outside only when she comes home to the garden. We can not stop her chewing cables we have barricaded the lounge she chews anything she can get hold of . I know it's her teeth .
@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 4 года назад
Hi there, Marilyn! Your Yorkie may be enjoying the walks so much that she completely forgets to go. Knowing that she will need a little time before or after her walk is helpful for her and good job identifying it! Supervision is going to be important for discouraging that behavior. Allowing her some time in that area with 100% supervision will help her learn the rules. Not allowing her access to those cables when you can’t watch her is a good idea. When you are able to train her, using a house-line will be helpful. Here’s a link to a video where we talk about that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-45kdNR6nAOs.html Happy Training! ~Ken

@McCannDogs
@McCannDogs 5 лет назад
Hi there, Anabel Gonzalez! I'm always a little cautious when answering questions like this. It's difficult to know what kind of "growl" you're talking about through a RU-vid comment. Our dogs will occasionally growl when we're playing tug. A growl may be a warning sign that your dog may be ready to escalate their response to having a "resource" taken from them.I will say that you can find something that your dog is only moderately interested in, and work on your "drop it" or "out" behavior. Here is a link to a video that talks about that: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NiSxXUZILHw.html Happy Training! ~Ken

Hello. Thanks for the video. Is it a Must to have Crate? I feel so bad to keep my puppy locked up. I put her bed & her litter box & her water in my bathroom. I close door at night so she can freely move around and do her business i. Her litter box. I use litter box because i am recovering from cancer treatment and i am too tired to go out many times. Am I doing it all wrong?

Is a crate/bench really necessary? Because usually at night I'm afraid he will pee or poo in his crate and roll all over in it and sleep in it too. Even though I walk with him before I hit the bed. I always hated locking up dogs like that...

have a nice day Try spending as much time as possible with her, then leave the room she is in for 5 seconds or so. If she doesn’t cry/whine/yap in those seconds, go back in and reward her. If she does then try again but maybe 2 seconds away from her, then reward. If this goes successfully, try extending the time you leave her.

If you have those Kong toys its a very good opportunity to use them. Fill them up with dog food(both dry and wet) and let them in the freezer overnight. Put something extra tasty at the top. And just 5 minutes before you're about to head out call his attention to it. You can put it inside his crate, or pen or whatever you use. Give it to him and wait until his distracted and go about your business. He'll spend a lot of time trying to get the food out, will have fun and eventually will forget that you've even left. That's what we're doing with our puppy over here. It has worked wonders!! Hope this helps! Cheers!

@@McCannDogs Thank you, Ken! Glad to have your feedback on this. I think the key to the problem is making sure it is a positive experience for your dog. If your dog associates good things with you leaving the house(like getting a meal that he likes and etc) soon he stops panicking every time you leave his sight. And very important.. Don't make a fuss while leaving or arriving. No high pitched long goodbyes, don't make a scene. Pay as little attention as you can. These things only further stresses the dog and exacerbates the problem at hand.

I have a question regarding night time crate use. I understand the process of getting a puppy used to a crate and making it a positive space but what about the first few nights if the puppy isnt used to being crated what do you do? do you leave them even if they cry (maybe put toys in with them?) I have a husky who is now 8 years but the first night we crated her she howled like no tomorow even in the same room as me and my biggest fear was the neighbours as she sounded like she was being murdured (typical husky :P), she was fine to sleep in it during the day when it was open but hated when we closed it. She is a fantastic dog but to this day cannot be crated whether at groomers or vets as she will salivate and try to dig her her way out due to stress. With future puppies i want to make sure i make the right choices especially with those first few nights.
@DaysonFeliz

Marsgmellows M my 8 week old puppy was the same, I put in one of my used sweaters inside as well as some treats . I put his food bowl during the day in his crate so he associated it with positive good things. First couple of nights I slept on the floor next to him with my hand in the crate. And I slowly moved away from the crate as the days went on. I slept on the couch for about a week, and a few nights ago I started covering his crate as we usually leave the hall light on and any movement / sound startles him... now with his crate covered he sleeps without issues and I can finally return to my room! I recommend you exercise with your pup and really REALLY tire him out... once he’s exhausted he’ll fall asleep without any issues . Good luck!

@@marg5863 I would not recommend, it's already a lot for a puppy to leave his brothers/ sisters/ mom etc. Also the ride in the car is stressfull. But obviously playing, giving them something to chew on is good! Make the puppy feel comfortable, let him/her settle in and just slowly start training. A puppy needs AT LEAST 18 hours of sleep per day!! And even something like a short walk a new trick is extremely exhausting I'm not a professional but this is my opinion based on my experiance with dogs........ if you have anymore questions feel free to ask😁
