What was once coined as a phrase to describe the protective and responsible tendencies of older sisters is getting some backing from new research.

The benefits of learning how to "help" in nurturing and contributing to the family is essential.

It is, but not when you’re a child and you end up not living out your childhood life due to taking on all of these duties. Most times than not, (younger or older) sons are not held to the same roles, standards and responsibilities. They’re out playing, being a kid and living out their childhood. This will eventually cause resentment issues towards the immediate family members, in that young girl or “oldest/only” daughter. It’s ok for every child to have responsibilities and duties in the home but most importantly every child should have the same rights to be children and live out their childhood.

What about the mom that's just looking for a best friend instead of someone to help raise the kid's. Didn't work out well for us

Never seen this in our family. Moms took care of the children and the oldest daughter became self centered
