I honestly believe that this style of gun storage is more secure than a safe because a safe is a magnet for thieves. As soon as they see it, it becomes a priority. What are the odds they are going to look too closely at a bedroom mirror?

I have a similar system, but I use high powered magnetic locks on a hidden switch with a battery backup. No combos, no RFID fobs to lose. But this system in this video is a pretty decent setup for people that want an out of the box solution. When I bought my home it had a hidden room, I lived there for months and only found it by accident. But I made sure it will never be found accidently ever again.

fyi, building codes mandate wires go through studs at a certain height above the floor. That's why your wires pass through taller than the outlets.

Thanks for this review. I'm trying to decide if these are "safe enough" to keep children out. Under 8 years of age.... I dont plan on ever letting them know that it opens but its good to know it should keep them out and I like the idea of the alarm. I might have to spend the money on the RFID.
@13cgunreviews
@13cgunreviews 8 лет назад
+BurtonVDP 8 years or 18 years old they'll need a pry bar or some sort of tool to open it. They won't be accidentally opening it. I like both locking mechanisms but the RFID has the edge of being able to be placed virtually anywhere.

Great in depth review. Are you worried about your slide becoming somewhat magnetized from storing it on a magnet for a long time?
@13cgunreviews
@13cgunreviews 7 лет назад
Thank you, I appreciate that! As to the slide becoming magnetized over time, I had never even considered that. I have no idea how likely that would be to occur. I'll try to reach out to some folks who are more knowledgeable on such things and see if that is possible and if it is how likely / how long it would take for that to occur. I would think not based on my limited knowledge of how magnets work and specifically these magnets because they are not naturally occurring magnets, they've been manufactured.

That 14/2 wire no joke that’s the white one and then the yellow is 12/2 wire a lot of the times they run it above the actual put let Bc it has to go into the single gain box on the top of it it’s a lot easier

Does the mirror rattle when it's closed?
@brianc401
@brianc401 7 лет назад
Great review and very helpful! Thanks. How likely could someone install/hide a safe behind the mirror instead of the plastic inserts? Since it's a tight fit, I'm guessing a biometric safe wouldn't work. The 'key-pad' would prevent the safe from sitting flush to the wall, right? Plenty of room for a door to a small safe to swing open, though?
@13cgunreviews
@13cgunreviews 7 лет назад
You've only got the width of the interior of the wall to work with which is only about 3.5". Unless you could go into the next room (like a closet or crawl space), I doubt anything would really be thin enough to fit.

That big magnet would have worked, the magnet was sliding cause its surface was too smooth (the smaller magnet had the friction of the 3M pad). Stick the magnet in place with some hot glue or a 3M pad and it'll easily hold the gun
@CalebFaulkner
@CalebFaulkner 8 лет назад
Interesting that it isn't recessed into the wall further. With the sliding door, you would think you could make the sliding part almost flush with the wall and it'd look like a normal, thin mirror hanging on the wall.
@13cgunreviews
@13cgunreviews 8 лет назад
It doesn't stick out too far but unless you wanted to do some serious work demo'ing more drywall and trying to finish around it, there really isn't any other way to do it. You'd have to be able to mud and paint in addition to just cutting the drywall doing it any other way.

Any thought to adding custom sheet metal behind the mirror and around the polymer cases?
@13cgunreviews
@13cgunreviews 8 лет назад
There isn't a lot of space to add much and keep the interior big enough to be useful. The biggest draw for this is someone not knowing what it is. I like the idea but I'm not sure, given the tight dimensions, how you could harden it to any meaningful degree without seriously compromising what would fit in it.
@stealthnight452
@stealthnight452 8 лет назад
so u don't think u could mount a this piece of metal on the back of the mirror? not sure what that white backing is actually but a thin piece of metal would be nice. just so if someone turned the room upside down and smashed a mirror, it would seem as all they did was smash a wall mirror
@13cgunreviews
@13cgunreviews 8 лет назад
It'd be a tight fit. If you replaced the backing on the mirror perhaps. It seems like it's a thin backing that is independent of the mirror, i.e. the mirror breaks there is still something behind it.

hopefully i can get an answer to this, will a shotgun fit inside one of these mirror models? 870 28" barrel?
@13cgunreviews
@13cgunreviews 8 лет назад
There is exactly 40" of clearance in the lower insert, so a 870 with a stock and 28" barrel probably won't fit, it's too long. Personally I wouldn't recommend a shotgun for home defense with such a long barrel, shotguns are long and cumbersome to begin with, that 28" barrel is going to be a nightmare if you have to leave the room.
@cgmislive
@cgmislive 8 лет назад
thanks alot
@craigdane7930
@craigdane7930 8 лет назад
I would just get a replacement slug or home defense barrel of 18 or 19" for protection. Or get a shorter 24 -26" turkey barrel with replacement chokes for pheasant / quail if your using the traditional 28" barrel. This would make a short barrel more adaptable solution for 870 shot gun home defense.
@cgmislive
@cgmislive 8 лет назад
thanks, I was more interested in getting it for the concealment elements not so much for home defense but thank you for the suggestions
@jerrystephens9057
@jerrystephens9057 7 лет назад
Question -- what is the total depth of the shelf? I see on their site that the insert is 3.5" and the cover is 2.5". Does that mean I have 6" total inches of depth? My rifle has a light on the side and is 4" total width. Thanks!
@13cgunreviews
@13cgunreviews 7 лет назад
The website is correct, it's exactly 3.5" deep. You probably get an extra .1" or so with the door clearance but it's pretty tight. 4" wide won't fit. My x95 tavor fits but the SAR tavor won't fit with the standard charging handle. I'd suggest moving your light to the top or bottom rail if you want to have it attached and in this mirror system. Keep in mind the space in the wall is less than 4" as a 2x4 stud used in the walls are actually 1.5x3.5. There isn't much depth to really work with.

How is the build quality? Is there play with the mirror door? Or enough play to tell that it is a door?
@13cgunreviews
@13cgunreviews 8 лет назад
+Mark Sudenga No it's nice and tight. Zero movement when it's locked, it's a really tight setup. You have to give it a push to close it enough for the lock to engage. It's bordering on being too tight almost but the plus side is, zero play.
@compunurse
@compunurse 7 лет назад

@supadupaman86
@supadupaman86 6 лет назад
Yes there is play. It is not as tight as he is making it sound. if you tug on the door you know its a door and it makes a sound from the metal hitting against the metal. You have to put your of rubber bumper on the rfid insert to dampen the metal on metal noise

Those aren't electrical cords or cordage, cords are for appliances, those are electrical wires. The reason they are that high is because that is likely about mid-thigh height of the electrician that did the job drilling all the holes through the studs. It's easier and faster for them to drill a couple of hundred holes when they can use a bit of leverage from their leg. Plus you need about 4"- 8" between the outlet box and the first staple for securing the "wire," then the wire goes into the above drilled hole and off to the next box. I'm not surprised the "wires" are there as you have light switches right behind you, and those "wires" likely lead to it.
@13cgunreviews
@13cgunreviews 8 лет назад
+Dustin M I'll defer to your expertise. I know about as much about cords and wires as I do space space travel: leave it to the experts, lol. As a novice to such things it did catch me by surprise, it's also a non switch outlet, or whatever the tech term is, it's always on.

Everything is a trade off. A magnet or card is a pretty low dexterity / non fine motor control action. No combination to mess up ect... at the same time, it is all about training. Pilots engage in high stress, fine motor control and don't normally have any issue because they do, as you said train, train, train.

Default unlocked kinda sucks. It should at least require some kind of key, pin, or mechanical tool so that it doesn't become as easy as just trying to open the mirror when the battery dies.
