A new uneven bars skill was successfully submitted at the 2024 European Championships in Rimini, Italy: the Adalsteinsdottir consists of a clear hip circle forward, followed by a salto forward straddled to hang on the high bar. It was submitted by Iceland’s Thelma Adalsteinsdottir and given an E-rating by the Technical Committee. This is Thelma’s first eponymous skill in the Code of Points.

This is one of the coolest skills and I love the height she gets on it! But it should haven been rated F in my opinion

Finally a new release other than a Tkatchev or Jaeger being competed! Haven't seen the Comaneci for almost a decade in major competitions.

I was thinking maybe that's the real reason being giving it a low score so nobody does it and save the gymnastic world from pronouncing the unpronounceable name. Should've been an F rating skill imho.

As far as I am concerned innovation is key to challenging allowing artistic expression into this sport!!! As for the ratings, I think the gymnasts and coaches should decide!

Beautiful skill. Can anybody explain why it was not given an F value? Is the difficulty really similar to a Comaneci?

The only reason it isn't given an F is because the fig is extremely inconsistent when it comes to scoring. The Comaneci isn't the easiest skill either since it can be difficult for some to get enough height to complete the straddle so it would make sense for the weiler kip version to be rated higher. There's a possibility that they may think the weiler kip route could make it easier to generate height, but it takes a lot of power to do a weiler kip on it's own. Shame we probably won't see anyone else do such a cool skill ):

So I think some people were saying they rated it E because they considered it a "Weiler Jaeger" rather than a "Weiler Comeneci". Similar to how a Tkatchev is a D and a Hindorff is an E. Personally I don't agree with the rating and I would consider it a Weiler Comeneci -> F (0.6) especially since there are amplitude deductions for the skill.

@@anthonyvhoyos Ohhh interesting. A Weiler-Jaeger is an interesting take on the skill. However, since the flip is initiated pushing the hip away from the bar, I agree that release is more like a Comaneci, or rather Weiler-Comaneci. Thank you.

It’s nice to see other gymnasts being recognised from different countries! I think this shows lots of risks and power and should be given an F rating, I’d even dare to say it might be slightly harder than a Downie (which is still a very tricky skill)

Agree with the failure of FIG here, and well, everywhere. It’s like making a cap on twists, pirouettes,etc, why would anyone do this skill of it’s worth the same as the skill without the hip circle. Maybe because they really hate hip circles too? 😅

They’re just saying that regardless of entry kip , a forward straddled somersault from the hips is an E rating.

Beautiful skill but I don’t think it’ll be super popular. Not a move that you can easily connect other skills too and that’s the name of the game these days. Still, really neat!!

I don't disagree.....mostly because this skill is not a forward free-hip entry Jaeger. By closing the hip angle and allowing the thighs to ride the bar, she is doing a forward hip circle into Jaeger. This is not really her fault because for over 10 years, we have allowed progressively more contact and support to happen in a Weiler kip(forward free hip circle) until we've gotten to a place where it's not even the same skill we were trying to pass it off as. With this currently accepted weaker technique of dropping forward and letting the front of the legs to rest on the bar so that the gymnast cannot only lessen the difficulty of doing a no-contact skill, but use the bar's rebound to assist the gymnast when casting upward to achieve the clearance needed to do a salto.

There's no "progressively more" about it, every WAG who's ever done a weiler has done it by pressing against the bar with the thighs and it's always been allowed. I agree though, doing it with more difficult technique should be rewarded. That's another reason to abolish the dumb E-cap on certain skill types, a real Weiler 1/1 should be an F in WAG, but they don't allow it.

@@Zuranthium Hey, Tim. Yeah. You're right, I was being a bit kind. I guess, by progressively more, I meant that we went from people like Jordyn who was at least _trying_ to do it right with an actual head drop and lever ride through the circle with straight arms using momentum to go up to handstand... to now where people aren't even pretending to free-hip anymore because they saw Simone get away with it.

Apparently she submitted the skill as a Weiler Jaeger. I think the E rating is fine as long as it's judged as a Comaneci-type skill (those types of releases are given more leeway on amplitude). F would be deserved if she did the Weiler without pressing against the bar or if she started the Weiler from a short swing under the bar (like the way McKayla Maroney did a Weiler after a Shaposh, but annoyingly that counts as an empty swing now).

Another failure of FIG. Really FIG an "E" rating that's a joke. It's as if the FIG committee that assigns difficulty rating is made up of people who have never done gymnastics before smh. The FIG committee needs a serious revamp for the betterment of Gymanstics across the world. They already encourge stock routines that are bland and blah. They discourage originality, especially on bars and beam. They need to revamp.

@@mitchcarbin481it's crazy because a Weiler Kip is a D skill and a Comaneci flip is an E skill. And a basic kip is an A skill. You would think common sense would tell a person that a Weiler Kip combined with a Comaneci flip would have a higher rating than just performing it with a basic kip. Is my logic flawed? Because I'm in agreeance with you. A gymnast has to have a great deal of strength, speed and power to execute that flip out of a Weiler. It's not as easy as the other commenter made it seem. Im pretty sure the lower rating has to do more with some "Nellie Kim" type politics..

Definitely should be an F or higher, considering the Comaneci itself is already super rare these days. And unlike a Comaneci, this skill actually could be connected by a skill prior, although it would be very tricky. Imagine a Ling + Lin + Adalsteinsdottir, or an Endo full or Godwin before this release. On a separate note I think we'll get another named skill this year - Qiu Qiyuan is now doing an in-bar stalder to piked Tkatchev which isn't yet named in the code.

The inbar pike tkatchev can't be named unless it's named retroactively. It should be called the Scheder-Simm but the rules in 2015 didn't allow skills to be named after multiple people.

Hot take just rate the Comaneci and this skill an F. I think WTC needs to take the norm of initially OVER-rating skills basically to reward the originality for the gymnast submitting it and to promote creativity in the code. Then, if those skills end up becoming too popular (and therefore somewhat proving that they weren't necessarily *hard* just previously un-imaged) decrease the rating.
