The power of stories lies within our ability to see ourselves in the characters and events portrayed. I like your sentiment Sobek on how these early Christians were reconciling the meaning behind Judas' role in the betrayal of Jesus, as in trying to explain his motivations behind that action and the bigger implication.

My favourite is April D DeConick's the "Thirteenth Apostle", which makes a very good, but not complete job of explaining why the Sethian Gnostics found the Eucharist rites and the atonement theology of the "Orthodox" Christians so abhorrent. In my view the Gnostic Gospel of Judas (which isn't a Gospel, really) also indicates that the Sethian Gnostics abhorred the ideal of celibacy and childlessness among the "Orthodoxes". ◾My personal view is that Judas is solely a literary device, he never occurs anywhere else than when Jesus "is about to be betrayed", and therefore there were never any one real person that behaved like Judas. Also the name was probably chosen to vilify Jews in general.
