I got an old one which hasnt heen used in years, with the preheating bowl, but i wonder? Should there be some sort of material in the bowl, to hold the meths so it doesnt slop around? Cheers, you've made a good easy to understand video. Am going to look at your complete service video next.

Thanks for tutorial. I have Petromax HK500 in active use. My old Hasag, newcomers Optimus 200 and Geniol 150 are awaiting restoration. Now I´m looking after original Tilley. These lamps are so mesmerizing, and light what they give is amazing in dark night.

Thank you mate. I just realised that most Tilley lamps on ebay dont have the preheater torch so some of the "bargains" would actually require an immediate extra cost. Thank you. In answer to your question though, I have a few Eccles lamps. They are nowhere near as bright, but I love them because they are incredibly safe and burn all night on a tiny amount of fuel. Thanks for making this video, I just bought two Tilly lamps, very old but need some tlc, so this was brilliant advice

Also I noticed that you open the control valve before pressurising the lamp. Instructions from Tilley say to keep the valve closed until the meths has nearly burnt down. Pressurise about 10 or 20 pumps then just before the meths goes out open the valve and the lamp should light with a pop.

I don't know why, I am not a clumsy person and I do have genuine Tilley mantles (From Tilley International here in the UK) but I simply cannot get them over the spigots. Both the larger and the smaller holes seem to be just too small and the string breaks when I try to tease it over the spigot. Do you have any thoughts on this please?

Hi, Thank you for such a great video. I purchased my Tilley Lamp X246B some 30 years ago and I am now going to use it once again. The paraffin is as old as the lamp itself...am I OK to uses the paraffin, I have quite a lot. Also, do you recommend a brand of paraffin and supplier ?? Cheers. Mike.

Hi, great video, told me pretty much everything I needed to know. Just a few questions. Is it not easier to fit the mantle by unscrewing the tube it fits to? Also, what other fuels is it possible to use? I was interested in the possibility of using ethonol, as is doesn't smell and burns much cleaner. Lastly, how long does a tank of fuel last approximately? Thanks in advance.
