New to DnD? Get these first! 

Getting several people together that like each other, have the time, and want to be there can be the hardest part for sure!

Only reason why I'm getting to DND was my kids. As a single teen I know the feeling of being the only nerd that likes RPGs while everyone else was playing cod or FIFA 😂😂😂😂

@@peachypufff I teach my kids that dnd and games like chess and things that stimulate the mind are for people who are smart, dumb people play dopamine addiction games like fps games and stuff. So my kids endeavour to be smart, and do smart hobbies too. Dumb people will always make fun of smart people including their hobbies

@@LofiLoungeASMR 5e is short for 5th editions, it's the 5th version of D&D. Essentially the rules are a bit different but it's not something to worry about

I think that’s an accurate description yeah. The Starter Set even has pre-gen characters and the adventure is pretty thoroughly thought out. Essentials Kit gives blank character sheets and the adventure is more “fill in the blanks” freeform.

I just got mine today because I’m trying to create a board game and add some of the DND elements to it, but I’ve never played DND so I came across a brick wall, so me and my siblings we’re gonna have to delve into the world of DND together

A good description of the different boxes and their experiences! Another way I like to describe is that Starter Set is more defined (pre-gen characters and tighter narrative) and Essentials Kit is more open (make your own characters, looser narrative). @@RPDevotee I recently purchased the stormwreck set, but want to create more characters in the future with a custom experience. I also got both handbooks. Should I purchase the essentials kit as well?

​@@TommyVs33 Hey! If you're just wanting to create your own custom characters and you've already got Stormwreck plus the Players Handbook then I'd actually say no, you don't NEED the Essentials Kit.

@@RPDevotee Thank you very much. Seemed like the appropriately nerdy thing too do and something special. I considered getting both books at the store but the thought of her first game being the one she gets proposed with was to special to pass up. I hope she enjoys it too because I am very worried that she's going to actually hate it during session one or that she won't be able to get into the roleplay. She did start to get excited and do her own research when I was talking about setting up a game which surprised me. She wanted to be a Paladin and also wanted a Focus from Horizon Zero Dawn. So I'm homebrewing her class to as having access to a small strange relic that is capable of performing paladin like abilities. And so you know how I plan on it ending, they are eventually gonna need a ring to lead them to a creature that can grant them a wish. But the ring will have caused such trouble that the creature decides it's time to cast the ring away. And then soon after I will "find" the ring from the game and use it. But after it's done I'll try find this short and let you know how it goes. Or I could just leave a comment on another video. I'll at least attempt to let you know how it goes lol

@@InhabitantOfOddworld They didn't want to play 🥺 I drew all of the maps out on squared paper, for myself as DM, I can put items on certain squares so when a character is around that part of a map I can give hints at hidden items/treasure... But yeah, they gave up on DND and I'm yet to play a game 😭

That’s fair, the three books would continue to be used for sure. But I think there’s also something to be said for dropping $20 just to see if you’re interested. I think some people probably can’t afford the price tag of the 3 box set right away, or they want to just sample D&D. If they like it, cool! If not, they’re just out the 20 bucks and at least they got a several hour adventure out of it (cheaper than going to a bad movie, haha) If you know you’re going to like it though, the box set you mentioned to get you the core books is a great option.

Hey! Since it sounds like you're looking join as a player, I would say to look for groups you can join. There's www.reddit.com/r/lfg/ on Reddit, or if you play online using Roll20 they have their own game search: app.roll20.net/lfg/search/ Other than that, there's Discord servers dedicated to D&D you can hop into and most will have Looking for Group channels. There's the official D&D Discord, but honestly just Googling "D&D Discord looking for group" should get you some good options. I hope that helps! :)

I don’t think you’ll go wrong with Essentials Kit. You lose the pre-generated characters but it’ll be fun for your players to create some and if you need there are several to be found online!

Yeah, I get you. But as someone in the position of a newbie wanting to get started this year, I decided that the essentials kit was a good place to start now with only a small $ outlay and to wait for the 2024 books out late this year and early next.

Not a bad plan, they make them different enough. :) Check out "Dragons of Stormwreck Isle" as well, it's their new Starter Set. If you're in the US you can get it at Target already. Everyone else can get it October 4th.

Honestly you can’t go wrong with either of these sets! If money is an issue, the basic rules are available for free to download. For community, there’s a D&D Discord and even a forum on D&D Beyond. :)

Starter Set is a classic for sure! And the way it's structured is a lot "tighter" of a narrative. Essentials Kit gives some good extra bits and accessories but the story is much more sandbox and "you fill in these blanks" Either way, I'm glad you had fun with it all. :)

There are! And they also just announced a NEW Starter Set: Dragons of Stormwreck Isle to be released end of July at Target, in October for everyone else.

I think that's an important note! If you don't yet have the money for the books, you can get by with even the Basic Rules and some imagination. And it's always nice to have at least one person with the experience to guide new people, I'm glad your group had that.

Thousands of figures? John that’s amazing! Is it because you wanted to play, from some other game, or you really just like painting figures?

@@RPDevotee I’m a table top gamer, mostly historical games, and I’ve always done some fantasy figures here and there to add variety, but I never really used them much so I’ve got this collection of figures that has been growing since middle school.

Generally it’s the players that write their backgrounds, in partnership with the DM. You all talk and set expectations for the game (look up “Session Zero”) so that the players have a bit of guidance with their backstory. You can then weave in things from their backstory and tie-ins, either with some prep before the campaign starts or in between each session when it makes sense. Ex. If there’s a bandit warlord that features in the fighter backstory, maybe the ruffians from town are related to the bandit group.
